Please welcome four new Thriving Mind team members who will be working as a part of the Trauma Recovery Network, funded by the $2.3M Victims of Crime Act (VOCA) grant we received from the Florida Attorney General's Office.

Managing Entities Applaud Legislature for Passing Peer Specialists Bill
Peer Specialist bill reduces the barriers of background screenings and offers more flexibilities for individuals to become peers for those in recovery. The bill also bolsters the Certified Recovery Peer Specialist program by streamlining the training process and allowing the Department of Children and Families to work with behavioral health Managing Entities to provide and contract with the appropriate, community-based training programs and trainers that offer evidenced-based trainings.

Board member named one of Florida's Influential Women
Miami Dade College’s (MDC) Executive Vice President and Provost, Dr. Malou C. Harrison, has been selected among Florida’s most impactful and influential Black women by ONYX Magazine, the premier publication celebrating Black achievement throughout the Sunshine State. 

Dr. Harrison has served on the Thriving Mind Board since 2020.

National Drug and Alcohol Facts Week takes place March 21-27, 2022.
Did you know? The number of teens who think marijuana use is harmful is declining. This is concerning because there is growing scientific evidence that heavy, regular use of marijuana that begins during the teen years can interfere with aspects of functioning and well-being.

HCC Youth Leadership Team held a pizza party @hialeahseniortbreds. and thanked Councilwoman Monica Perez who moderated the virtual cafe session.

The team said "mental Health is a serious topic and we need to have more open conversations on how to address the symptoms."

For years, Gang Alternative's Building Leaders of Character (BLOC) after-school program has helped high school and middle school students in North Miami discover how to work through differences by teaching positive alternatives to fighting and bullying. Thriving Mind Publishes Journal Articles
Newcomer Article Reports on Mental Health Screenings
John W. Newcomer, M.D., and colleagues published an article in Psychiatric Services journal titled:

“Lessons Learned From a New Reverse-Integration Model to Improve Primary Care Screening in Community Mental Health Settings.”

The authors sought to describe a reverse-integration intervention aimed at improving preventive health screening in a community mental health clinic.
