Saving Land, Preserving Culture: How Conservation Easements Work

A conservation easement is a voluntary legal agreement that permanently protects land by restricting development, ensuring its natural, ecological or cultural value is preserved for future generations.

Prickly Pear Land Trust (PPLT) created an inspiring first-of-its-kind example with its Avalanche Cultural Conservation Easement in Montana. Supported by a $220,000 grant from the Arthur M. Blank Family Foundation, this agreement protects 5,300 acres of Avalanche Ranch while honoring its significance to the Blackfeet Nation.

The Des Rosier family, Blackfeet landowners of Avalanche Ranch, partnered with PPLT to safeguard traditions like cultural ceremonies, food gathering and hunting, while also preserving the land’s grasslands and forests. This project shows how conservation easements can simultaneously protect nature while respecting the land’s important cultural heritage, ensuring these landscapes remain preserved for many generations to come.
