Two New Associate Members Join Our Board

We're pleased to welcome two exceptional leaders to the foundation board as associate directors.

Dr. Raphael W. Bostic has served as president and CEO of the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta since 2017, overseeing monetary policy, bank supervision and payment services. Previously, he held the Judith and John Bedrosian Chair at USC's Sol Price School of Public Policy and served as assistant secretary for policy development and research at the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

Michelle Nunn leads CARE, where she oversees more than 7,000 people working in more than 100 countries to save lives and defeat poverty. Under her leadership, CARE reached more than 57 million people last year. She co-founded Hands On Atlanta and previously served as CEO of Points of Light.

Finding Hope After a Devastating Loss: Shemeka's Story

"I was depressed, wasn't coming outside, wasn't cooking." That's how Shemeka describes life before In Her Hands, a guaranteed income program that provides $1,000 monthly to women in Atlanta's English Avenue and Vine City neighborhoods.

After losing her infant son in 2022, Shemeka faced profound grief while struggling financially. The guaranteed income replaced daily worry with stability. She paid down debts, caught up on rent and bought a reliable car. Most importantly, it gave her breathing room to heal.

The program enabled Shemeka to access grief counseling she couldn't afford otherwise. Today, she's rebuilding her catering business, which she plans to name "Chozen" after her late son and looks forward to rediscovering her passion for cooking and serving others.

What Parents Need to Know About Teens Who Use AI for Mental Health

Three in four teens use AI chatbots for emotional support, but new research from Common Sense Media finds these platforms are fundamentally unsafe for mental health conversations.

Despite improvements in handling explicit suicide content, chatbots consistently miss warning signs of anxiety, depression, eating disorders and other conditions affecting 20% of young people.

The danger is that their empathetic tone feels helpful, but it actually delays the young person from getting real professional care.

What parents can do:

- Don’t allow teens to use AI chatbots for mental health or emotional support

- Monitor for signs of emotional dependency or over-reliance on AI

- Ensure teens have access to real mental health resources and trusted adults.

Harvard researcher Raj Chetty

Addressing Atlanta's Economic Mobility Challenge

Atlanta ranks last among the 50 largest U.S. cities for economic mobility. In order to better understand why, and what we as a city can do about it, the foundation convened a group of local leaders at Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Jan. 13 and invited Harvard researcher Raj Chetty to share insights from his groundbreaking work.

During the convening, the foundation announced a $75 million grant to Blue Meridian Partners to support a five-year economic mobility initiative in Atlanta and select smaller Georgia communities. We believe Atlanta has the leadership, partnerships and heart to chart a different path forward.
