Phillips Exeter Academy's Lamont Gallery will be showing William Kentridge: Universal Archive from January 11 through March 9. This exhibition features the works of William Kentridge, a renowned artist, actor, director, filmmaker, philosopher and activist. Universal Archives contains over 75 prints by Kentridge, including some of his animation, or "moving drawings." Kentridge grew up in South Africa surrounded by the political upheaval of apartheid, and that sense of uncertainty and change is what drives his creativity. "There is a desperation in all certainty. The category of political uncertainty, philosophical uncertainty, uncertainty of images, is much closer to how the world is," he says. Many of the images in Universal Archive have familiar subjects like cats, trees and coffee pots, but just as many have abstract marking as their subjects. Universal Archive hopes to challenge the viewer and make them draw their own meaning. Starting January 12, Carriage Barn Arts Center will be showing their 39th Annual Juried Photography Show through February 15. This exhibition was juried by Susan Carlson and Claartje van Dijk, assistant curators at the International Center of Photography. "With over 780 entries, we were impressed by the wide variety of subject matter and approaches photographers employed," they said. The 79 exhibited photographers range from seasoned professionals to talented students, and their photographs vary just as widely. Each photograph is for sale and a portion of the proceeds will benefit the Carriage Barn Arts Center. Milton Academy's Nesto Gallery is showing Mister today through February 22. Mister features the work of Chinese artist Wen-Ti Tsen, specifically his series Home Town: Re-presenting Chinatown as a Place of People. Tsen is known for addressing topics like migration, identity and politics, and Home Town is no exception. The series is a visual push-back against the gentrification of Chinatown, drawing attention to the part of Chinatown that matters most to Tsen: Its people.
