William Kentridge: Universal Archive at Lamont Gallery
in Exeter, New Hampshire from January 11 through March 9

Lamont Gallery
William Kentridge, Six Birds, 2012, from Universal Archive series, linocut printed on non-archival pages from Shorter Oxford English Dictionary.

Phillips Exeter Academy's Lamont Gallery will be showing William Kentridge: Universal Archive from January 11 through March 9. This exhibition features the works of William Kentridge, a renowned artist, actor, director, filmmaker, philosopher and activist. Universal Archives contains over 75 prints by Kentridge, including some of his animation, or "moving drawings." Kentridge grew up in South Africa surrounded by the political upheaval of apartheid, and that sense of uncertainty and change is what drives his creativity. "There is a desperation in all certainty. The category of political uncertainty, philosophical uncertainty, uncertainty of images, is much closer to how the world is," he says. Many of the images in Universal Archive have familiar subjects like cats, trees and coffee pots, but just as many have abstract marking as their subjects. Universal Archive hopes to challenge the viewer and make them draw their own meaning. There will be an opening reception for Universal Archive tomorrow, Friday, January 11 from 5:30 p.m.⎻7:00 p.m. Lamont Gallery is located at the Frederick R. Mayer Art Center at 11 Tan Lane in Exeter, New Hampshire and is open Tuesday⎻Friday 9:00 a.m.⎻5:00 p.m. and Saturday 10:00 a.m.⎻4:00 p.m. For more information, please visit exeter.edu/lamont-gallery/william-kentridge.

The Beast and Me: Leslie Schomp, Mary Kenny, and Andrea Olmstead

January 14⎻February 8, 2019

Reception: Thursday, January 24, 6:00 p.m.⎻8:00 p.m.

"The Beast and Me," the upcoming show at the Chandler Gallery, is replete with scenes of a child's imagination. In their execution, the sculptures and drawings by Leslie Schomp, Andrea Scofield Olmstead and Mary Kenny feel lifelike, but their subjects are touched with the whimsy, curiosity and tenderness common in childhood fantasies.

In one sculpture, a woman in a white gown wraps her arms around the waist of a large brown bear, his claws hovering tentatively over her shoulders; it's an embrace or slow dance frozen in time. In another, a small lion rests gently on a boy's head as he closes his eyes. His expression is so tranquil that he seems lost in a dream.
