West Nile Mosquitoes
Summer safety reminders
The North Shore Mosquito Abatement District (NSMAD) has found the first mosquitoes to test positive for West Nile virus in the District this year. This is a common, annual occurrence, but merits awareness and caution when spending time outdoors. One batch of mosquitoes, collected on June 9, 2021, from an NSMAD trap in Skokie, tested positive for West Nile virus in the NSMAD lab on June 11. Please visit the NSMAD website to see the most current test results.

While the risk of being infected with West Nile virus is low at this time of year, the NSMAD recommends that residents take personal protection measures to minimize mosquito bites including: using insect repellent, wearing loose fitting clothing, and avoiding peak mosquito feeding times during the hours around dawn and dusk. Residents are urged to examine their property and eliminate any items that can hold water, particularly smaller items that may be easily overlooked. Remember, if it can hold water, it can breed mosquitoes.
Refuse and Recycling Cart Reminders
Do not place your refuse carts in the street
Always place refuse and recycling containers on the house side of the curb (on the carriagewalk, parkway, or driveway) and NOT in the street. Whether for summer street sweeping, fall leaf pickup, winter snow removal, or simply everyday driving, obstacles in the street are never a good thing. So remember: Don't block the street with your refuse carts. Place them up behind the curb, and not in the street or gutter.

Houses along the new bike lanes on Howard Street should still place refuse carts on the house side of the curb, and never in the street or in the bike lane (see picture). Groot workers will manually retrieve and return carts in these locations as necessary.
