News from the Oakland Mills Board of Directors regarding the Thunder Hill Pool

This year Columbia Association replaced the diving board at the Thunder Hill Pool with an aquatic climbing wall.

Last night OM Board Chair Jonathan Edelson, OM Columbia Council Representative Ginny Thomas, OM Board Member Phil Anderson and OM Village Manager Sandy Cederbaum met with Marty Oltmanns, CA Director of Aquatics, to discuss the addition of the new climbing wall and the removal of the diving board.

The change from a diving board to climbing wall caught the board and many Thunder Hill Pool users off guard.  CA and the Columbia Association Aquatics Committee fully discussed installing the climbing wall and were excited about having the first CA aquatic climbing wall at Thunder Hill. The diving board was in need of replacement and climbing walls are a new idea for aquatic venues, one that CA was anxious to make available to pool users. The fact that the diving board needed to be replaced gave CA the opportunity to purchase the diving wall in lieu of purchasing a new diving board. It was with the best intentions that the wall was installed.

The climbing wall will remain for the entire summer pool season.  During the summer CA will be obtaining feedback from pool users to evaluate whether or not pool users favor having the climbing wall remain at Thunder Hill after this summer or prefer that it be removed and replaced with a diving board or other aquatic feature. CA will listen to your comments and concerns, gather input, and evaluate at the end of the summer.

So for now, please try out the wall.  Many have tried it and are having a lot of fun!  Your feedback is very important and will impact decisions about the pool during the off-season.

This year CA also will begin the Ultimate Swim at Thunder Hill which will start when school's out and from 4 p.m. until closing on the four weekdays that the pool is open.  Kids can use noodles in the pool, large floating equipment that CA will provide, and other fun stuff.
The Ultimate Swim will utilize the entire pool area and during those hours there will be no lap swimming.  Again, this is a change but one that CA hopes will add to a new and enjoyable pool experience. Lap lanes will be available during these times at Stevens Forest (each day but Monday) and Talbott Springs (each day but Wednesday) as well as many other CA Pools.
