Face Coverings Still Required After Sept. 28
|
Governor Evers' mask mandate is set to end on Sept. 28, 2020. The School District of Baraboo would like to remind our families that per school district policy, face coverings will continue to be required while on school premises after Sept. 28, 2020, and until further notice.
The District is requiring face coverings for students 5-years of age and older while on school premises. We ask that parents/guardians also wear face coverings while on school property when dropping off or picking up students.
Please note, the District is currently using the following definition of "face covering:"
"Face Covering" means a piece of cloth or other material that is worn to cover the nose and mouth completely. A "face covering" includes but is not limited to a bandana, a cloth face mask, a disposable or paper mask, a neck gaiter, or a religious face covering. A "face covering" does not include face shields, mesh masks, masks with holes or openings, or masks with vents. The District will align to the order until the order is no longer in effect.
Below is the District's Face Covering Response Protocol for elementary and secondary students. Click here for a printable version of this protocol. Thank you for working with the District to provide a safe environment for our students to be engaged, challenged and inspired!

"NEW" NORMAL IN-PERSON LEARNERS

ABE Kindergarteners Practice Social Distancing
|
For kindergarten students, the first couple weeks of school always involve establishing rules and routines. "We walk, not run, in hallways. We use inside voices. When the teachers talk, we are quiet. We raise our hands and wait until called upon to speak."
There were a few additions to this year's routine, including "our masks need to cover our nose and mouths, and we give our classmates 6 feet of space when possible." Mrs. Kargel's class at Al Behrman Elementary practiced these old and new rules and routines while walking to the lunch room. Our newest students were quiet in the hallways as they followed the directional arrows on the floor, and kept to the right side of the hallway while Mr. Lenger's class passed on their left. They waited patiently on floor markers spread 6 feet apart to enter the lunch room. They followed Mrs. Kargel's directions to find their assigned seat at their lunch tables, and they listened quietly as Mrs. Kargel explained why these protocols needed to be followed. They raised their hands to ask questions, and waited until Mrs. Kargel called on them to speak. We are so proud of our littlest learners. Great job, kindergarteners! Assigned seating is one of the District's COVID-19 safety measures. By having assigned seats, the District can assist Sauk County Public Health with possible contact tracing in the event that a student develops COVID/COVID-like symptoms.

East Students Fill New Water Bottles at Filling Station
|
On the first day of school, elementary students received Baraboo Thunderbird water bottles, courtesy of the School District of Baraboo!
As part of our COVID-19 safety measures and in following with the recommendations of the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction, our schools have discontinued the use of traditional shared drinking fountains and instead are using touch-free water bottle filling stations.
Pictured below, East Elementary students took turns filling their water bottles at the sensor-activated filling stations. The sensor activation allows for easy and safe hands-free use and helps to limit the spread of germs. The refill station fits most bottles underneath the spout, contains cold and refreshing water and is more sanitary due to the hands-free function, helping our students stay hydrated and providing an extra layer of safety.
Water bottles have been ordered for Jack Young Middle School and Baraboo High School students also, and will be delivered as soon as they arrive.

ABE Students Sanitize After Mask Break
|
Al Behrman Elementary students lined up behind a hands-free hand sanitizer dispenser after taking a mask break at the end of last week. Before entering the building, each student put their hands under the sanitizer spout and used the hands-free step pump to squirt the sanitizer into their hands.
Each of our buildings has hands-free hand sanitizer pumps as part of our COVID-19 safety measures. Staff are also scheduling in time to wash hands more frequently, including before and after snack and lunch and when switching from one lesson to the next.

District Offers Tech Support Sessions to Virtual Families
|
The District knows that adjusting to virtual learning within your home can produce new challenges. During the week before school, our District invited consultant Naomi Harms to provide coaching on virtual teaching to our staff. In a continuation of our effort to support virtual learning in our District, we provided several opportunities for virtual families to engage with Ms. Harm this week via Google Meets. These meeting focused on such topics as:
The District is working toward providing more support and opportunities for our virtual students, families and staff. More information will be provided as future opportunities develop.

Baraboo High School is devoted to providing a safe experience for student-athletes and their families. All of our schools competing this fall recognize that to achieve a safe playing environment for student-athletes, a series of safety measures must be implemented that will limit elements of the experience for spectators, students, and other community and school-based groups that otherwise share in the game day experience. Such measures are designed to support student-athletes' ability to safely play their full sport season in good health.
We find ourselves so fortunate to be able to offer these student and family opportunities in the time of this public health emergency. As conditions and protocols shift in response to the virus, we look forward to your ongoing support and collaboration to provide the best experiences possible for everyone.

Reminder: Wash Your Face Coverings!
|
In-person families, please remember to wash cloth masks and other face coverings regularly. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) recommends the following for how to wash face coverings.
Washing machine
- You can include your cloth face covering with your regular laundry.
- Use regular laundry detergent and the warmest appropriate water setting for the cloth used to make the face covering.
Washing by hand
- Check the label to see if your bleach is intended for disinfection. Some bleach products, such as those designed for safe use on colored clothing, may not be suitable for disinfection.
- Use bleach containing 5.25%-8.25% sodium hypochlorite. Do not use a bleach product if the percentage is not in this range or is not specified.
- Ensure the bleach product is not past its expiration date. Never mix household bleach with ammonia or any other cleanser.
- Ensure adequate ventilation.
- Prepare a bleach solution by mixing:
- 5 tablespoons (1/3rd cup) of 5.25%-8.25% bleach per gallon of room temperature water or
- 4 teaspoons of 5.25%-8.25% bleach per quart of room temperature water
- Soak the mask in the bleach solution for 5 minutes.
- Discard the bleach solution down the drain and rinse the mask thoroughly with cool or room temperature water.
- Make sure to completely dry the mask after washing.

Friday Folders Are Going Virtual
|
The School District of Baraboo's Friday Folders are going virtual for the 2020-21 school year!
Information from non-district entities, like club sports, library programming, parks and rec information, etc., can now be accessed in a digital Friday Folder by clicking here. Friday Folder submissions from previous weeks will be archived in this folder as well, so if you want to reference it you can go to that week's folder and view it again!
This is a safety measure for in-person students to limit the number of papers received from outside sources, and will allow students who are attending school via the Virtual Learning Model to access to the information.
Please note: Important school-related information directly from the School District of Baraboo will still come home in Friday Folders, and virtual teachers will provide this information directly to their students.
