Congratulations 2023 Retirees!

Congratulations to the remarkable Baraboo School District staff on your well-deserved retirement! Your dedication, passion, and unwavering commitment have positively impacted countless lives. Thank you for shaping minds, fostering growth, and creating a nurturing environment. Enjoy this new chapter and may it be filled with joy, relaxation, and wonderful adventures ahead!

We have included messages from staff that selected to share something.

Bernie Borkenhagen

I have truly loved my career at Baraboo High School. It has been an honor to work with such wonderful educators, many which I will have life-long friendships with. I have been able to witness first-hand the transformation of so many students, coming in as awkward freshmen and leaving as confident and responsible adults. I will miss being around the energy that is always present at our school, but I am ready to settle down a bit and enjoy being a grandma in my next chapter of life. Thank you for 34 wonderful years.

Michele Yates-Wickus

I would like to thank all the staff, students and families that I have had the opportunity to work with in BSD. I have truly appreciated all the collaboration with our community partners and agencies. I have been honored to advocate and support our school community in creating and implementing what is in the best interest of our students and families. Thank you for the opportunity to serve our community. I am looking forward to continuing to support the district and community in the future. Every Student, Every Day, Every Way!

Get to Know Juneteenth: From History to Celebration

The Juneteenth holiday began on June 19, 1865, when "some 2,000 Union troops arrived in Galveston Bay, Texas. The army announced that more than 250,000 enslaved black people in the state were free by executive decree. This day came to be known as 'Juneteenth' by the newly freed people in Texas."

Juneteenth is our most recently declared federal holiday. Here's a quick resource guide to get to know the holiday, to deepen your knowledge, and to honor the history of Juneteenth.

BSD offers a free summer food program to kids and teens from June 19th to July 13th. Free breakfast and lunch are served Monday through Thursday at Al Behrman Elementary School and Baraboo High School.

Baraboo Area Experiencing Housing Growth

You may have seen it as you drive around town: growth. Yes, the Baraboo area is experiencing housing growth – a trend expected to last well into the future. In fact, according to a 2022 study commissioned by the City of Baraboo, the City is projected to see 1,275 new single-family residential housing units over the next five years and more than 1,000 additional multi-family units. The City’s Economic Development Department is also tracking housing growth.

The School District of Baraboo anticipates this development will increase our student enrollment count. District leaders are therefore planning ahead. Our district is working with the University of Wisconsin's Applied Population Laboratory, which is expected to complete enrollment projections by the end of July 2023. Our district has also reformed the Elementary Facilities Advisory Committee (EFAC), charging it with exploring school capacity data, enrollment projections, and potential facilities options. If you are interested in taking part in the EFAC and supporting the future direction of the elementary schools please contact Dr. Briggs at rbriggs@barabooschools.net

We will keep you informed as we learn more about the impact of residential development on our schools.

Wisconsin RTI Center Recognized BSD Schools (List Schools)

Recently, the Wisconsin RtI Center recognized six schools from BSD for our work toward fully implementing a school-wide system that, according to national research, leads to improved student outcomes. By establishing our equitable, multi-level system of support, we increase consistency of effective instruction, build staff knowledge and skills to equitably support all learners, use data to proactively identify and provide support for students and create a positive culture that nurtures relationships with students, and their families, and communities. This strong foundation helps learners gain the skills needed to graduate ready for college or a career!

Schools Recognized: Al Behrman Elementary (Silver), East Elementary (Silver), Gordon L. Willson Elementary (Bronze), North Freedom Elementary (Bronze), Jack Young Middle School (Bronze), and Baraboo High School (Bronze)

Summer School

BSD's 2023 Summer School programming begins next week! We can't wait to see you!

JYMS Journal Project

All students at Jack Young Middle School had an opportunity to sign up for a summer journaling kit.  Students who indicated they were interested in a kit were invited to a journaling introduction workshop.  They left the session with information about different types of journals, ideas for journaling topics, a personalized journal, and supplies for journaling throughout the summer.  Over 150 students signed up this year.  We hope they enjoy recording their thoughts in whatever way they choose!

ABE Kindergarten Celebrations

Mrs. Kargel's Kindergarten class had their end of the year celebration. They sang songs and recited a poem for their families. Then they received awards and enjoyed a slideshow and snacks with their guests. Thank you to the parents, grandparents and even great grandparents that came to celebrate their kindergartener's accomplishments this year.

East 4th Grade Reading Project

4th graders read a very engaging myth from the Tlingit (pronounced “Kling-it”) people called “Cannibal Monster”. The Tlingit people live along the northern coast of Alaska. They were master woodcarvers and they used totem poles to tell stories. They still use them to this day to tell stories of how things came to be. You will usually find a raven on the top of the totem pole. This creation myth tells the story of how mosquitoes came into the world. Students did a wonderful job of working together to retell the story in drawings on their totem poles.

Muppets on the Move!

Some high school students from Mrs. Watson's 3D Sculpture class had a show and tell of their puppets with the Kindergarteners in Mrs. Spicer's Art Class. They introduced themselves, talked about how they created their puppets (foam armatures covered in sewn on fleece plus accessories), and also about their puppet's name, hobbies, likes and dislikes. Then they answered questions from the Kindergarteners and joined them in a closing song. It was great fun!

School Families Last Hurrah

Our North Freedom School families gathered for the last time this year for some celebration and camaraderie. Each family engaged in a special activity together. Some played kickball, wrote with sidewalk chalk, played with bubbles, flew paper airplanes and more. We are looking forward to gathering as families again next year!

Baraboo School District Volunteer Opportunities

Dear School District of Baraboo Families,

Thank you to all of you who have volunteered your time to support the School District of Baraboo. We aim to offer a variety of activities that you may choose from when giving your time, and appreciate your interest and support.

The purpose of this communication is to explain some recent changes to the volunteer background check process for the Baraboo School District (BSD). Volunteers who submitted a background check prior to August 1, 2022 are required to complete the Raptor Background Check prior to volunteering with BSD this year.

BSD will use Raptor Background Check moving forward to streamline the process and provide further protection to volunteer information. All applications will be completed online no longer requiring volunteers to bring information into the buildings for application. Click the link above or type in https://apps.raptortech.com/Apply/NTUwOTplbi1VUw== to access the form.

All information collected on the application will remain confidential and not be shared outside the volunteer program.

Once your application is complete you will be prompted to set-up an account in the Raptor portal. This will help to ease the process once you arrive onsite to volunteer. After the account is established volunteers will receive emails once the application is approved, and 30 days notice when a renewal is needed.

A minimum of two days is needed to process applications once submitted. It is not an instant approval process, so please plan ahead. Once final approval is received, volunteers will need to have their driver's license with them when they arrive to volunteer so it can be scanned in the check-in process.
