Riptide is a summer swim program for ages 5 to 18. Registration is open for the spring stroke clinic and summer season.

Students Return from Switaly Trip
|
Baraboo High School students, parents, and teachers recently took part in an amazing history trip to Switzerland and Italy. The trip focused on the Renaissance and Ancient Rome and included a jam packed schedule from dawn to dusk for nearly two weeks. Students began in Zurich and Lucern, Switzerland, where they enjoyed looking up at the Alps from a boat ride in Lake Lucerne and took a lift up Mount Pilatus to see the sights from 7,000 feet! Students learned firsthand about the unique culture of Switzerland at a Swiss Folklore Dinner that included fondue, wienerschnitzel, alphorn blowing, and yodeling! From Switzerland they crossed under the Alps to Italy where they enjoyed a boat ride in Lake Garda around the remains of a Roman Fort and villa before arriving at Venice. There, students observed a glass blowing demonstration, took part in a guiding walking tour of the streets and bridges, wandered around the Doge's Palace, experienced a water taxi and, of course, gondola rides! From Venice the group traveled to Bologna, home to the world's oldest university, for lunch and a walking tour before continuing on to Florence. In Florence, students learned about the Renaissance, ninja turtles, artists, sculptures, architects, and scientists that flourished there. Many students also took a half day trip to Pisa to get some great pictures holding up the tower!
After Florence the trip was just half over! The group traveled to Assisi and received a great tour of the Basilica of Saint Francis and learned about the Franciscan Order before continuing to Rome. The first night in Rome was spent at a great restaurant where students were entertained by opera singers over a four course meal of great Italian cuisine. The next day was one of the fullest of the trip and included over ten miles of walking around Rome. The group started at the Colosseum and Roman Forum with a guided tour of each before eating lunch on the way to Vatican City, the smallest country in the world. At the Vatican, students received an excellent guided tour of the Vatican Museum, Sistine Chapel, and Saint Peter's Basilica. After an Italian lasagna dinner, the group took a walking tour of Rome in the evening to see the Pantheon, Trevi Fountain, and enjoy gelato. It was a truly great day!
After Rome, students traveled to Pompeii to visit the Roman city that was destroyed by Mount Vesuvius in AD 79. The city is incredibly well preserved and was a real highlight of the trip. While under the shadow of Mount Vesuvius, the group took a boat ride to Capri, the beautiful island paradise that is the destination of many Hollywood celebrities to check out the clear blue waters and ancient Roman villas. The group then traveled back to Baraboo to catch up on much needed sleep and reflect on the awesome experience.
BHS is proud to offer many travel opportunities to students as the History Department offers trips in even numbered summers, the Art Department travels in odd numbered summers, French students every odd year during spring break, and the music department offers yearly student travel opportunities. By doing this, it is the hope of teachers and staff that students of all different interests will have an opportunity to expand their view of the world and travel.
Students have worked on many fundraisers to prepare for the trip including brat stands, rummage sales, coffee sales, and more and wish to thank the Baraboo community for their continued support of these student opportunities. #Switaly2018 #Barabooproud

of BSD teacher Jori Ruff, featured on Channel 3000 Tuesday for establishing Baraboo Bookmobile where Mrs. Ruff has given thousands of free books to local students!
From Channel 3000: An act of kindness can go a long way. Jori Ruff feels proud as she drives around Baraboo giving out free books from the back of her van.
"It's sort of a labor of love," Ruff said.
You could call it a passion project. Her journey started a few years ago after Ruff, a compassionate teacher, won a $3,000 award.
"I took about $1,000 of that $3,000 and bought probably 350, close to 400, books," she said.
She gave those books and have them little ones who were eager to learn.
"A lot of people ask me why I do it. I have three kids. I have a full-time job. I'm getting my master's (degree). But when I see students and when I see children excited about reading, there's just nothing better," she said.
While the bookmobile started on her own dime, she now relies on donations, which she says is easier than you might think.
"The Baraboo community is incredibly generous and when I ask for books, people bring them," she said.

McMahon Participates in Discover China Program
|
Each year, AASA selects a group of outstanding superintendents and other school district leaders to participate in the program, sponsored by the Triway International Group. The delegates travel to China to visit K-12 schools, local education agencies and state education departments to observe classes, demonstrate teaching skills and engage in a variety of activities. Participants arrived in Shanghai on Sunday, July 8, and will return to the U.S. on Wednesday, July 18.
"Through the AASA Discover China program, educators from both countries have the opportunity to engage with each other, learn from one another and bring their professional practice to a higher level," said Chuck Woodruff, AASA chief operating officer. "We are pleased to partner with Triway on a cultural initiative that connects American school district leaders with their global counterparts. The program also provides a platform for positive exchanges between students from one country and educators from another. With the growing popularity of Mandarin programs in the U.S., AASA's Discover China initiative provides a huge benefit for AASA members."
The program includes visits to the International Education Association Shanghai, Huimin Elementary School, Nanjing Xiaozhuang University Beiwei Campus, Gaochun Hubin Senior High School, the Beijing Institute of Education (BJIE) and the China Education Association for International Exchange (CEAIE). Program topics will include:
- Current and potential programs between China and the U.S.;
- STEM education;
- AASA's National Superintendent Certification program;
- AASA's National Conference on Education;
- School leadership; and
- The education system in the Jiangsu Province.

Summer Academy 2018 Wraps Up
|
Dear Summer Academy Parents/Guardians:
I want to take this opportunity to thank each family for sharing their child(ren) with us at ABE over the last month. Our staff appreciates your trust in us to provide another quality learning experience for your child(ren). It has been fun to get to know your child over the past few weeks. Thank you for your support of our Summer Academy.
We wish to thank Mrs. Jori Ruff, English Language Learning Teacher for the Baraboo School District, who helped our students to have 3 free books during Summer Academy. We hope that your child(ren) can access these books and other books from the public library or your house during the remainder of the summer to continue to strengthen their literacy skills before the new school year starts this fall.
We say thank you to our community partners of Culver's, Casey's and Mobile One for donating free food coupons to the Summer Academy. We have distributed these free food coupons to students who earned "NightHawk Awards" for making good choices at school that were respectful, responsible and/or safe.
Lastly, I wanted to say thank you to the wonderful Summer Academy staff made up of a mixture of Baraboo School District elementary and middle school teachers and support staff. They developed challenging, yet fun and engaging activities for our students and provided necessary supports along the way too. Thank you to our Summer Academy Team!

Job duties include disbursement of funds, daily receipting and banking, maintenance of vendor listing, 1099 processing, and assistance to the Director of Business Services with assorted duties. Familiarity with Alio financial management software is preferred.
