Vicar Amber's Sunday Message

In the song “I Can Only Imagine”, the artist ponders what being in the presence of God will be like. The options he considers all sound rather positive: dancing, standing in awe, falling to one’s knees, singing in praise. Yet, when Isaiah has his chance to see God “sitting on a throne, high and lofty”… the sight is far from what the song describes. There are six-winged creatures flying around. There is smoke, and the ground trembles. One of the creatures comes toward him with a live coal to touch his lips. Maybe the artist should have added “running away screaming” as a possible response to being in the presence of God. Yet, the ways that God chooses to make Godself known reveals to us important aspects about God’s character and ourselves. What might some of those things be?

Mighty God, we are not always ready to receive you or what you have in mind for us. Day by day, draw us more fully into your image and your love. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

WONDERING...

REAL QUESTIONS FROM REAL PEOPLE TO LEARN MORE ABOUT GLC

What is the deal with all these prophets?

Starting with Jonah last week, we have entered into a series of weeks in the narrative lectionary where we will be hearing from a number of prophets in the Old Testament. The task of prophets in biblical times was to guide the people of Israel back into faithful living in their covenant with God. Sometimes this guidance came with threats and warnings, other times with words to soothe and comfort. We continue to listen to the prophets of old today because we too are disciples that are trying to live in line with God’s desires for us, and we too often struggle to do so. As we lean into the wisdom of the prophets these next few weeks, be thinking of how their words and examples can inform your own discipleship and journey to live faithfully with God.
