Goyhood

by Reuven Fenton

When Mayer (née Marty) Belkin fled small town Georgia for Brooklyn nearly thirty years ago, he thought he'd left his wasted youth behind. Now he's a Talmud scholar married into one of the greatest rabbinical families in the world - a dirt-poor country boy reinvented in the image of God. But his mother's untimely death brings a shocking revelation: Mayer and his ne'er-do-well twin brother David aren't, in fact, Jewish. Traumatized and spiritually bereft, Mayer's only recourse is to convert to Judaism. But the earliest date he can get is a week from now. What are two estranged brothers to do in the interim?

So begins the Belkins' Rumspringa through America's Deep South with Mom's ashes in tow, plus two tag-alongs, an insightful Instagram influencer and a one-eyed dog. As the crew gets tangled up in a series of increasingly surreal adventures, Mayer grapples with a God who betrayed him and an emotionally withdrawn wife in Brooklyn who has yet to learn her husband is a counterfeit Jew.

For those who plan ahead, our May selection is Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow  by Gabrielle Zavin.

Thanks to the many who have given us some great recommendations. We are always ready to hear others. Please forward them as well as any questions to Janice Wittmershaus at JKWittmershaus@gmail.com

Hello!

WOW!! I have just heard about an incredible opportunity for those aged 26-50* to visit Israel. This incredible program is being created by the Reform Movement to help people to better understand Israel and to have an incredible Israel experience. The cost of the program is ONLY $600 and that includes your flight (from Toronto, NY or 6 other major cities), accommodations, tours/experiences and many of your meals.

Note – any non-Jewish spouses are also welcome to participate in the program!

In addition to the 8 day trip, you can extend your stay (based on flight availability) and spend more time in Israel.

If you have any questions, I would be happy to speak with you, please be in touch!

Shalom,

Rabbi Morais

*If you fall outside this age range but are interested in participating, please contact Rabbi Morais.
