ABRAHAM – PART 16
MELCHIZEDEK’S GREETING

Melchizedek (mêl-kîz’-ê-dêk), king of Salem and “the priest of the most-high God” (Gen. 14:18), came out to meet the returning victorious conqueror, Abram. He brought bread and wine to Abram, a foreshadow of Christian sacraments of two thousand years later. He also blessed Abram and blessed “the most-high God” (El Elyon: God the Highest).

Melchizedek was priest and king of Salem, later named Jeru-Salem, the capitol of future Israel and a holy city chosen by God. Priest and king were God’s early model for desired rulership. Melchizedek was a type model for future messiah, Jesus, who is our High Priest and our King of Kings. Jesus shall return and rule the world from Jerusalem, the same place of Melchizedek, God’s priest, four thousand years ago.

Scholars have long debated Melchizedek’s true identity. Jewish custom says he was Noah’s son Shem who was still alive and serving in a godly role. Some scholars say he came from Chaldea to Canaan (Salem) and was probably personally acquainted with Abram or his family from their Chaldean days. Personally, I put no credibility in either view.

Just as Melchizedek was king and priest, so is Jesus, our king and priest, and so shall we also be kings and priests in God’s future kingdom under Jesus. Just as Melchizedek ruled from Jerusalem (Salem), so shall Jesus rule from Jerusalem, and we also together with Him from the New Jerusalem.

Tomorrow we will look deeper into the identity of Melchizedek and see how remarkably he shows forth as a pre-incarnate form of Christ.

PRAISE IS A WEAPON

The Hebrews were rescued from Egypt by Moses miraculously. They saw the plagues, the destruction of crops, the death of animals, and then the death of the first born where the blood was not applied to the homes. They saw the Red Sea parted and they walked through on dry ground. They saw all of Pharaoh’s army destroyed when the water fell on them and drowned them. I would think after seeing eyewitness accounts of this that they would have been full of faith and would praise God for his marvelous works.

Quite the contrary. They got into the wilderness on their 40- day trip (that’s what scholars have determined it would take to get from Egypt to the promised land), and they forgot what God had done. They forgot the miracles. They believed the giants ahead would destroy them. They murmured and complained about food and constantly wanted what they had in Egypt (they forgot they were slaves!). Instead of getting there in 40 days God said for each day that they were grumbling they would have a year instead. 40 days became 40 years. They continued to grumble and complain and eventually Moses lost his temper with them and succumbed to their ungodly complaining and lost his ticket into the promised land.

How often do we do that also as Christians? We see God do something way beyond natural means and then when we are up against a wall, we wail and cry and throw a tantrum, asking “where are you God?” We are told in Psalm 103:2 “…forget not all his benefits.” We are to put into remembrance the things that God has done and trust him to do what is needed daily in our lives. We are to praise Him in all circumstances, not for the circumstances, but in the circumstances. Praise is a weapon that moves the heart of God. When we praise Him for his glorious works and give him adoration for being God, it releases angels to work on our behalf. Grumbling will stop the move of God!

Praise disarms the enemy. Praise releases God to work in your life. Praise is a weapon that costs us nothing. It changes us from the inside out. Psalm 150:6 says “Let everything that hath breath praise the LORD. Praise ye the Lord!

Let praise be your standard to live by!

A LITTLE CHRISTIAN HUMOR

Our teacher asked what my favorite animal  was, and I said, "Fried chicken." She said I wasn't funny, but she couldn't have been right, because everyone else laughed.

My parents told me to always tell the truth. I did. Fried chicken is my favorite animal. I told my dad what happened, and he said my teacher was probably a member of PETA. He said they love animals ........very much.

I do, too. Especially chicken, pork and beef. Anyway, my teacher sent me to the principal's office. I told him what happened, and he laughed, too. Then he told me not to do it again.

The next day in class my teacher asked me what my favorite live animal was.
I told her it was chicken. She asked me why, so I told her it was because you could make them into fried chicken.

She sent me back to the principal's office. He laughed, and told me not to do it again.

I don't understand. My parents taught me to be honest, but my teacher doesn't like it when I am.

Today, my teacher asked me to tell her what famous person I admired most I told her, "Colonel Sanders."    Guess where I am now...
What does it mean to be born again?
