NATIONAL PAWPAW DAY | THIRD THURSDAY IN SEPTEMBER
National Pawpaw Day on the third Thursday in September provides a taste of the great (forgotten) American fruit. Take a bite out of a creamy mango-banana flavored pawpaw to celebrate!
Despite their tropical taste and appearance, many pawpaws grow natively in the United States. With over 60 varieties of pawpaw to choose from, the fruit’s character changes slightly in each one.
With a blend of banana and mango and sometimes pineapple, we shouldn’t be surprised by the names given to the pawpaw. For example, the Kentucky Banana and Hillbilly Mango hint at the exciting tropical experience awaiting us. Interestingly, the pawpaw is the largest edible fruit native to the United States.
Pawpaw in History
Pawpaws are a rich part of the fabric of American history and have been from the very beginning. For example, the pawpaw Native American diets included the pawpaw as an integral part of their diets. Some may have cultivated the pawpaw, too. However, early Europeans confused the pawpaw with the papaya.
As part of United States history, rumor suggests the pawpaw was George Washington’s favorite dessert. Presidential farmer, Thomas Jefferson, cultivated the tree at Monticello. Additionally, while Jefferson served as minister to France in 1786, he shipped pawpaw seeds to friends living there. During the Corps of Discovery, Lewis and Clark wrote in their journals that they were quite fond of the pawpaw. At one point during their expedition in 1806, they relied on pawpaws when other provisions ran low.
While many people have never tasted the sweet, custard-like fruit, the day sets out to change that. This seasonal fruit enjoys a peak harvest time from late August through the first frost. Given that markets and festivals across the country offer samples, there’s ample opportunity to taste your first pawpaw.

About the Exhibition
In 1776, many colonists made a great leap to a new idea: maybe they could do without monarchy and aristocracy. If they could unite with one another, “the common people” of the colonies might form a more equal society and government. American Democracy: A Great Leap of Faith, a traveling exhibition from the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service, examines the continuing evolution of America’s experiment in a government “of, by, and for the people.” The exhibition will be on view at The Historic New Orleans Collection from June 17, 2023, to October 8, 2023. Admission is free.
Drawn from the permanent exhibition of the same name at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History, American Democracy explores the challenges and triumphs that generations of Americans encountered as they sought to create a government based on the sovereignty of the people. It explores the history of citizen participation, debate, and compromise from the nation’s formation to today.
Featuring engaging multimedia experiences, immersive design, and artifacts from the Smithsonian Institution, state historical organizations, and The Historic New Orleans Collection, American Democracy demonstrates that self-government relies on every citizen’s active participation in the quest to form a “more perfect union.” Exhibition sections explore the origins of American democracy, the changing identity of eligible voters, the machinery of democracy, the right to petition and protest beyond the ballot, and the rights and responsibilities of citizens.
American Democracy is sponsored locally by the 2023 Bienville Circle, J.P.Morgan Private Bank, and WDSU-TV.
A companion exhibition, “Yet She Is Advancing”: New Orleans Women and the Right to Vote, 1878–1970, is on view through November 5, 2023. Expanding on a 2020 virtual exhibition on THNOC’s website, the exhibition tells a decades-long story through objects, images, documents, and interactive displays—and through the words of the New Orleans women who for nearly 100 years persisted in their struggle to obtain the vote

It’s Fettuccine Frenzy at Middendorf’s Manchac & Middendorf’s Slidell! Every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday in September, handmade paper-thin fettuccine is on the menu.
This mouth-watering dish is served with your choice of classic Alfredo or Marinara Sauce and topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese with optional add-ons of shrimp, crabmeat and chicken.
- Fettuccine with Alfredo Sauce topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano Cheese 15.25
- Fettuccine with Marinara Sauce topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano Cheese 15.25
- Optional add-ons:
- Shrimp 10.95
- Crabmeat 9.95
- Chicken 6.95
- Side of Fettuccine topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano Cheese 9.50
Fun Facts:
- Our handmade, paper-thin fettuccine was a guest favorite at Bella Luna in the French Quarter. Bella Luna was a fine dining restaurant owned and operated by Horst and Karen Pfeifer. It closed due to Hurricane Katrina and never reopened. The memory of Bella Luna lives on through Fettuccine Frenzy at Middendorf’s. Same Pasta. Same Taste. None of the Fancy.
- Middendorf’s Owner and European Master Chef Horst Pfeifer makes the fettuccine from scratch which consists solely of Semolina flour and eggs. It’s a very time consuming process to make the fettuccine so paper-thin, but it’s definitely worth it.
- Fettuccine is available all day (lunch and dinner).
- Our full menu is also available.
- Uncooked fettuccine is also available for purchase to make a quick meal at home.
We hope you can join us for Fettuccine Frenzy — Every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday in September!

New Orleans EMS Hosts the EMS World Expo
New Orleans EMS will be hosting the EMS World Expo at the Marc Morial Convention Center next week from Monday September 18th to Friday September 22nd. Celebrating it's 35th year, the EMS World Expo continues to be the largest EMS dedicated event globally. This international event will bring EMS experts to New Orleans to share best practices and to better EMS care for those in need across the world.
As the host agency, New Orleans EMS is pleased to represent our city and the exceptional EMS care we provide to the residents and visitors of The City of New Orleans. NOEMS will be holding a Complex Coordinated Terrorist Attack exercise at the Caesars Superdome on Monday, alongside partner agencies including NOPD, NOFD, and NOHSEP. On Tuesday, international attendees will learn from New Orleans EMS' groundbreaking blood program, the only one in Louisiana where blood is carried on ground ambulances. Wednesday, as the main conference kicks off, attendees will be entertained and encouraged by New Orleans' own jazz musician and cardiac arrest survivor Maurice "Miracle Meaux" Trosclair. Read his story.
Attendees will also have the opportunity to be a part of NOEMS' lifesaving work by donating blood through our partners at The Blood Center, who will be holding a blood drive just for EMS World Expo attendees. Wednesday will continue with further lessons on blood administration presented by NOEMS' Deputy Medical Director, Dr. Emily Nichols, in conjunction with other agencies carrying blood in the field, as well as pediatric respiratory care insights from NOEMS' Medical Director, Dr. Meg Marino. Thursday we'll see NOEMS being represented by one of our field paramedics, Jessica Barbour, alongside panelists addressing pre-hospital use of ketamine. The conference will close out on Friday as NOEMS continues with pediatric care insights by Cpt Stanley Woods, and a session dedicated to NOEMS' implementation of BLS transport ambulances by Deputy Medical Director Dr. David Rayburn and Lieutenant Sarah Bass.
EMS World Expo attendees will also get to enjoy the best New Orleans has to offer in the evenings, including a special benefit concert featuring The James Martin Band, in support of the New Orleans EMS Foundation, which is open to the public at large.
Members of the media are encouraged to Apply for Press Access so they can see all that the EMS World Expo is bringing to The City of New Orleans.

Judith Owen
Judith Owen, a performer whose stylistic range spans rock, pop, classical, jazz, blues, and musical theatre, Owen is also a comedic actress and master storyteller.
Born into an overtly musical Welsh family, Judith Owen grew up in London surrounded by classical music, ballet, theatre, and the fine arts. Owen will be on the road for much of 2023 starting with shows in New Orleans this May, before taking a 5 night residency at The McKittrick in New York. She returns to Europe this summer for a series of festival dates and headline shows, before touring across the US in the fall.

What does "grandiose" mean?
Impressive
grandiose pronunciation: /ˈɡrændioʊs/
Definition: impressive or imposing in appearance or style, especially pretentiously so
Origin: from French grandiose meaning "great, grand"
Example: His grandiose plan to build a skyscraper in the middle of the small town was met with skepticism by the locals.
"Impressive" is a suitable synonym for "grandiose." Both words suggest a sense of greatness, but "impressive" lacks the negative connotations of pretentiousness and over-the-top extravagance that can be associated with "grandiose." While something grandiose may appear to be trying too hard to impress, something impressive simply inspires admiration through its excellence or beauty. For example, a musician may give an impressive performance that leaves the audience in awe, but a grandiose performance may be seen as excessive or showy. Ultimately, while both words convey a sense of greatness, "impressive" is a more positive and genuine choice.

Laugh and cry with these lovable Louisiana ladies who are “as delicate as magnolias but as tough as steel" as they support each other through the challenges of life.
This tear-jerking comedy is set in a beauty salon in the fictional northwestern Louisiana parish of Chinquapin, based on the writer’s hometown of Natchitoches, Louisiana, and the death of his sister. The play spans three years in the lives of Truby, Shelby, Annelle, M’Lynn, and Clairee, whose heartaches and hilarious attitudes pay tribute to southern women’s survival skills. Experience the eternally relevant 1987 Broadway hit drama that became a beloved movie in 1989 starring Sally Field, Shirley MacClaine, Olympia Dukakis, Julia Roberts, Dolly Parton, and Darryl Hannah. With country fried quips such as “I’m not crazy—I’ve just been in a very bad mood for forty years,” “I have a strict policy that nobody cries alone in my presence,” and “Don’t try to get on my good side—I no longer have one” …you will cry, laugh, and be Southern comforted by these warm, wise women.

Lower Depths Theatre
The Tennessee Williams Theatre Company of New Orleans ends its seventh season with Spring Storm by Tennessee Williams this September at The Lower Depths Theatre on the campus of Loyola University New Orleans, directed by Salvatore Mannino. Mannino recently directed Cat on a Hot Tin Roof and The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time for Le Petit Theatre du Vieux Carre. He serves as artistic director of the Loyola University New Orleans Department of Theatre and Dance, where TWTC has a professional residency since 2019.
Spring Storm serves as an origin story for many of Williams’ signature tragic heroines. It was written from 1937-38 when the playwright was in college and during his travels to New Orleans and beyond. It never received a staging in his lifetime, but in its pages are planted the seeds for Amanda and Laura Wingfield of The Glass Menagerie and Blanche DuBois of A Streetcar Named Desire among other characters from his popular plays.
The story centers around Heavenly Critchfield, a small town woman torn between the choice of her longtime boyfriend and a desire to leave town to start a new life and the chance to become the wealthiest housewife in town for a mysterious old schoolmate just returned home. Both men are making moves that benefit themselves, and Heavenly realizes she has to choose based on someone she’s never been asked to consider: herself. All the while, her mother, caught in her family’s former glory, hopes she’ll make the choice to elevate their reputation. What Heavenly doesn’t realize is that danger and jealousy lurks around every crepe myrtle tree and azalea bush in this seemingly sweet town…and there will be deadly consequences to her decisions. Set against the backdrop of the post-Depression Mississippi Delta, the play is full of Southern Gothic Easter eggs for longtime Williams fans and is replete with small town gossip and drama for first-time Williams initiates.
An all local cast includes Nicole Miller as Heavenly (Rivertown’s Matilda), Matthew Raetz as Dick Miles (TSF’s Romeo & Juliet), Matthew Boese as Arthur Shannon (TWTC’s Sweet Bird of Youth) and. Charlie Carr as Hertha; and features Tracey E. Collins, Margeaux Fanning, Miles Hamauei, Delphine J, and Maile Zox.
The production team for the production includes Nick Shackleford, Diane Baas, Eric Porter, Grace Smith, Puck, Augustin J Correro, and Madeline Taliancich. This season of the Tennessee Williams theatre Company of New Orleans is supported by a grant from The New Orleans Theatre Association (NOTA) and The New Orleans Tourism & Cultural Fund (NOTCF).
“We are thrilled to end this season on this early Tennessee Williams treasure trove filled with his ideas for future masterpieces. It sets the stage for an exciting next season when audiences will see so many of these ideas explored. We can’t wait to share all of these amazing plays with our audiences, starting with Spring Storm,” says TWTC Founding Co-Artistic Director Nick Shackleford.

NATIONAL PECAN COOKIE DAY | SEPTEMBER 21
Each year on September 21st, people across the United States celebrate National Pecan Cookie Day.
This delicious cookie can be eaten and enjoyed morning, noon and night. If you’re a pecan snacker, another pecan related celebration is National Pecan Day on April 14.
Pecan is an Algonquian word, meaning “a nut requiring a stone to crack.” A member of the hickory family, the pecan is native to central and southern United States.
One of the best ways to enjoy the celebration is by having freshly baked pecan cookies straight from the oven. Add a cold glass of milk to wash it down, and you’ll have found near perfection. Joining a friend while savoring the buttery goodness is even better. The variety of recipes for soft or firm cookies astounds most bakers. The toasted nuts and sugary sweetness melts in your mouth, keeping you coming back for more. They delight, and when stored properly, they stay fresh, too. But pecan cookies won’t last long when they’re baked right.
Gather up the ingredients for your favorite recipe. Whether soft and chewy or the dunking kind, bake up a batch for Pecan Cookie Day.

How many hearts does an octopus have?
Octopuses have three hearts — and nine brains!
Did You Know? All octopuses are able to produce ink except for those octopuses that live in the deep open ocean. The octopuses’ ink comes from the ink sacs in their gills. They squirt ink when they face danger and need to escape from their predators.

Friday's Wine School...David Sobiesk contacted me about doing a Friday Night Wines School with a range of Lambursco from a producer who was visiting this week. Unfortunately, her flight was leaving before the tasting and she could not join us, but it gave Dave and me a reason to show off the varied and diverse range of bubbles produced in northern Italy!
Sparkling wine is made all over the Italian Peninsula. From the growing popularity of Pet Nats to Charmat Method, Col Fondo and Metodo Classico, pretty much every region produces some sort of sparkling wine. It is especially popular in northern Italy where Franciacorta and Trento excel in elegant Champagne styled wines, Prosecco thrives in Friuli Venezia and the Veneto and Lambrusco is said to have been made in Emilia Romagna for thousands of years.
Join us tonight as we discuss the varied histories and production methods of some of our favorite regions. And hopefully we'll be celebrating the continuation of cooler temps on the patio (especially for Dave's sake!). Reserve your spot here, Italian Fizz- 3 spots remaining

THE DOOKY CHASE KITCHEN: LEAH’S LEGACY cooking series celebrates Leah Chase, the “Queen of Creole Cuisine.”

President of Croatia to visit Belle Chasse for grand opening of $5.2M cultural center
Photos courtesy Croatian American Society.
President of Croatia Zoran Milanović will join the Croatian American Society for the grand opening of the new cultural center, the Croatian House, on September 23, in Belle Chasse.
“This momentous occasion marks a milestone for the Croatian American Society in the New Orleans area,” Tony Cibilich, Croatian American Society president, said in a news release. “We are honored to have President Milanovic visit as part of this goodwill trip to the United States. Croatians have a long history in the United States going back generations. The Croatian House is meant to honor our past and build on our future, and it will help reconnect Croatian-American friends and family and build new relationships across the community.”
Lt. Governor Billy Nungesser and other parish officials will be in attendance, as well as Archbishop Gregory Aymond, who will offer a blessing over the new building. According to the news release, the grand opening will include catering from Dragos, chargrilled oysters, Croatian beer and music and other aspects of Croatian culture. It’s located at 220 Croatian Way in Belle Chasse.
Construction of the $5.2 million, 9,000-square-foot facility began in December 2021. It was completed in August. The steel and stone building is built in a Croatian style. It comprises a great hall, indoor kitchen, bar, outdoor pavilion and kitchen for roasting lamb and grilling oysters.
Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. and the festivities commence at 7 p.m. The event is for members only. To join the Croatian American Society, email casnola@gmail.com or visit www.CroatianAmericanSociety.com.

The Backstreet Cultural Museum, the local institution dedicated to preserving the cultural heritage of New Orleans, will host a celebration to mark an expansion into an adjoining room. On Saturday, September 30, the museum will host an event featuring never-before-seen exhibits and musical entertainment.
The expansion celebration will take place from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Attendees can enjoy music spun by the museum’s own DJ Du, while a unique Black Indian performance at 4 p.m. is set to be a highlight of the event. Additionally, Big Chief Victor Harris, known as the Spirit of Fi Yi Yi, will deliver a message to the crowd, underscoring the significance of this expansion.
This expansion celebration comes on the heels of the museum’s first anniversary in its new home, marking a year of continued growth and success. Initially founded in 1999 by photographer Sylvester “Hawk” Francis, a recipient of the 2004 Best Of The Beat Heartbeat Award, the museum has served as a vital showcase for his work and the broader cultural scene of New Orleans. After opening its doors in the Blandin Funeral Home in 1999, the museum has persevered through the years, even surviving the challenges posed by Hurricane Ida, which damaged its former location.
To learn more about the Backstreet Cultural Museum and the upcoming event, visit the museum’s official website.

Philip Melancon
Mancini’s music was the soundtrack of mid-century Hollywood. He contributed to over 250 movies and scores of T.V. shows. To name a few: Peter Gunn and The Pink Panther in the 50’s, Breakfast at Tiffany’s and Two for the Road in the 60’s, Darling Lili in the 70’, and Victor / Victoria in the 80’s. The focus of Mancini by Moonlight is the lyrical songs of Mancini. Although this giant of American music was recognized for his sweeping scores, here we feature his songs with lyrics. Moon River, Days of Wine and Roses, Charade, It Had Better Be Tonight and such. It’s a rich library of exceptional melodies coupled with the masterful lyrics of Johnny Mercer, Leslie Bricusse and Jay Livingston.
Mancini by Moonlight: the cabaret, will be performed by the seasoned duo of Heidi and Phil Melancon. Joined to their hips the ever so hip David Cook and Alden Hagardorn.
See you under the twinkling stars of Monkey Hill.

Final Four Rematch: LSU WBB To Face Virginia Tech in SEC/ACC Challenge
Story by Zack Nagy
© Provided by LSU Country on FanNation
LSU will host Virginia Tech in a Final Four rematch on November 30 at 8 p.m. CT as a part of the ACC/SEC Challenge.
The Tigers and Hokies met last season in the Final Four as LSU came from behind in the fourth quarter to clinch a spot in the national championship game. The Tigers trailed by nine to start the fourth quarter but outscored the Hokies by 16 in the final quarter to claim LSU’s first national championship game berth. LSU defeated Iowa two days later for the national championship.
LSU will enter the season with multiple players returning from the program’s first ever national championship team along with a talented list of newcomers that include the nation’s No. 1 rated recruiting class and the top two players from this year’s transfer portal.
Related video
Forward Angel Reese headlines LSU’s returners as the defending Most Outstanding Player from the Final Four. She set the NCAA record with 34 double-doubles throughout the season as a dominant scorer and rebounder. Reese led the SEC in both scoring (23.0 ppg) and rebounding (15.4 rpg).
Guard Flau’jae Johnson is another returning starter for the Tigers who earned SEC Freshman of the Year. In her first year of college basketball, Johnson averaged 11.0 points per game and 5.9 rebounds per game. Guard Kateri Poole started in LSU’s final five games throughout the championship run, bringing a defensive physicality to the court while having a knack to knock down big shots for the Tigers.
LSU will also bring back contributors like forward Sa’Myah Smith who was named to the SEC All-Freshman and guard Last-Tear Poa. Both Smith and Sa’Myah played critical and productive minutes off the bench in the national championship win over Iowa.
The Tigers top-rated incoming freshmen class is headlined by guard Mikaylah Williams who was named the 2023 Morgan Wooten National Player of the Year as the top high school player. Forward Aalyah Del Rosario, the nation’s No. 7 rated player, played in the McDonald’s All-American game with Williams and the Tigers also bring in freshmen guard Angelica Velez who was named Tennessee’s Division II-A Miss Basketball and guard Janae Kent.
LSU was active in the transfer portal, adding guard Hailey Van Lith and forward Aneesah Morrow who were ranked No. 1 and 2, respectively, in ESPN’s transfer portal rankings. Van Lith averaged 19.7 points, 4.5 assists and 3.2 rebounds last season, earning AP All-America honorable mention honors while leading Louisville to the Elite Eight. Van Lith and Iowa’s Caitlin Clark are the only two players in the country who averaged at least 19 points, 4 rebounds and 3 assists throughout the year. Morrow was a lethal scorer (24.7 ppg) and rebounder (12.2 rpg) at DePaul. Her and Reese were the only two players in the country to rank inside the top 10 in the nation in both scoring and rebounding.
