THE BIBLICAL FALL FEASTS – PART 9
CLEANSING

The Jewish New Year of Tishri 1, the Feast of Trumpets, and Yom Kippur (day of Atonement) on Tishri 10 mark the ten-day period of High Holy Days in Judaism. The eight days in between are the Days of Awe (admitting, returning, or repentance) during which they cleanse themselves of anything not pleasing to God or offensive to any person.

Yesterday we mentioned that some may take water baptism by immersion; they see water as a cleansing agent for the soul as well as the body. Many of them will go to a river, lake, or pool taking the whole family, including children., They will gather stones and throw them one at a time into the water, symbolic of casting their sin into the depths of the sea, never again to be seen by God or man. They took this practice based on the Prophet Micah (Ch. 7:18-19) (KJV) which says, “Who is a God like you, pardoning iniquity…(and) will cast all our sins into the depths of the sea.” Each stone they cast represents a sin; it is cast into the “sea” of water to be remembered no more.

They do these symbolic customs after doing some soul searching. While water is seen as a cleansing agent, the cleansing agent for Christians is the blood of Jesus.   Although our sin condition was washed away by His blood when we received Him as our personal Lord, we yet will commit some acts of sin. I John 1:9 is written to the born-again-believer when it says, “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. While we confess our sins, there is more to cleansing ones’ soul than that. How so?

Psalm 119:9-11 (NKJV) tells us how to cleanse our soul. “How can a young man (or any person) cleanse his way? By taking heed according to Your Word. With my whole heart I have sought You…Your Word I have hidden in my heart (so) that I might not sin against you…oh Lord.” When we truly seek the Lord with all our heart, soul, and strength and we diligently read and study His written Word (Holy Bible), then His Holy Spirit can apply His Word to our heart and soul to bring a deep cleansing.

It can result in breaking old habits, or breaking soul ties picked up from intimacy with others, or giving you a fresh new perspective on life, and many other benefits.

We should cleanse ourselves daily through God’s written word, and prayer, and meditation, and praise.

WHAT IS YOUR PASSION?

As a Pastor, so often people ask for prayer for God to reveal to them what their “purpose” is. The truth is, you can only know God’s purpose for your life as you seek him.

David was a shepherd. He was the youngest son in the family. Traditionally the oldest son would be the one to transfer most of the family “business” to. Yet, while David was out taking care of some sheep God sent Samuel to his home. God sent him there to anoint a “new king” since Saul had sinned. After looking at all of the older brothers, (and there were many – a total of ten), Samuel asked if there was anyone else. David’s father replied with, “There remaineth yet the youngest, and behold, he keepeth the sheep.” Even his own father didn’t recognize what had been happening with David. There were probably many lonely days when it was just him and the “sheep.” Oh, there was also a bear and a lion that visited David too while tending the flock. He was a fighter for “the sheep.”

While he was a shepherd, he played his harp. Many of the psalms are really songs that David wrote in adoration of God. He loved God. He worshipped him, and never wanted to fail him. He had a “passion” for the things of God. It was first place, even when he sinned, he always came back to his “first love.”

If you are looking for purpose, then have passion for the things of God. While you spend time in His presence, He will show you the plan. We must remember Psalm 23 where God told David that he would lead him in paths of righteousness, and would restore his soul (mind, will, emotions). Hebrews tells us in Ch. 11:6; “But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.”

First you believe that He is, and that He will reward you as you diligently (passionately) seek him. Make that your priority, and then everything else will fall into place! He has a plan for you and will reveal it when you spend time with Him! Like David, it may show up unexpectedly, but what you prepared for before that will put the plan together! Just believe and expect it to come by faith.
