NATIONAL BE AN ANGEL DAY
On August 22, National Be an Angel Day encourages good deeds and kindness to others. By supporting those in need and inspiring others to kindness, we display an act of an angel here on earth.
The day also recognizes those who've been angels to us. Sometimes we have a terrible day. Whether its bad news or poor planning, we all have them. A kind word, a hug, or even a pleasant atmosphere makes a difference.
Other times, days, even weeks, can be devastating. A loss, illness, or overwhelming news takes the wind from our sails. Those angels provide comfort at a time when we need it most.
The same happens to the people around us. We don't always know what others may be enduring. We can be an angel in big and small ways. Whether we know a person's concerns or not, merely offering to join them for a meal may relieve their stress. Having someone to listen to often is something we need most.
Noticing someone's efforts is another way we can be an angel. Letting them know you're impressed with their stamina, talent, progress - fill in the blanks. These positive comments provide morale-boosting energy.
Any time we see someone in need, the opportunity arises to offer help. Assist an elderly neighbor with lawn care. Don't overlook the single parents when setting up play dates. Their children - and the parents - need social interaction, too.
Also, when you value someone's time, effort, and presence, don't hesitate to tell them. We may be individual people, but we don't thrive alone. Look out for each other.

intrepid Pronunciation: in-TREP-id
Definition: fearless; adventurous
Origin: from Latin "intrepidus" meaning "not trembling" or "not frightened"
Example: The intrepid explorer ventured deep into the jungle, undeterred by the dangers that lay ahead.
Fearless is an apt synonym for the word "intrepid." To be intrepid means to be without fear, to have the courage to face challenges and take risks. It entails a willingness to step outside of one's comfort zone and embrace the unknown. An intrepid person is not afraid to explore new territories, whether they be physical or mental. This quality is often associated with adventurers, explorers, and pioneers who have a passion for pushing boundaries and discovering new things. To be intrepid is to be bold and daring, and to live life to the fullest.

Funeral arrangements announced for legendary WGNO Sports Director Ed Daniels

Accompanied by his wife Robin, Ed was in the Los Angeles area to cover the New Orleans Saints training camp.
A request from Ed Daniels’ family
Just after midnight on July 26, Robin said Ed suffered a massive heart attack. He remained hospitalized in California until being transported back to New Orleans through the efforts of Saints owner Gail Benson and admitted to Ochsner main campus.
WGNO Sports
Ed was a Rummel High School and Loyola University graduate who went on to join WGNO in 1991, ultimately becoming the most senior member of the team during his 47-year career in television.

join One Book One New Orleans and the Historic New Orleans Collection for "Lincoln Beach: Past, Present, and Future," a panel discussion exploring the history of the recreational haven, from its opening in the 1930s to the present-day efforts to revitalize this important cultural landmark. The discussion takes place Thursday, August 22 at 6pm at the Williams Research Center (410 Chartres Street).
Learn more about the panelists, pictured above L-R.
Sage Michael Pellet, is the New Orleans Climate Justice Organizer at Healthy Gulf. Pellet is a local and established community activist and organizer working to better the quality of life in his hometown of New Orleans. Unfortunately, it is a city that faces constant disasters of flooding and loss of homes caused by climate change, an outdated stormwater system, and local citizens living with disaster trauma. His work is centered on community building with those underrepresented and most impacted and building coalitions to ensure community decision-making and a just transition in the process moving forward. His commitment and leadership are shown through his advocacy to restore and reopen historic Lincoln Beach.
Lolita Villavasso Cherrie is a retired educator and the founder and member of the board of directors of CreoleGen. CreoleGen believes it is vitally important for people who have been denied access to historical information about their family makeup, origins, and place in history to discover and share this information.
Reggie Ford, artist, grew up hopping the street cars, running the streets of the French Quarters, and finding the hidden treasures of his magical city. Reggie started drawing in the third grade, but the instant he picked up a paintbrush at age 14 he discovered what would become his lifelong passion for painting. By adulthood, Reggie had become a new-age Renaissance man as he simultaneously created his signature works of art and actively pursued a semi-pro football career while working full-time at Pat O'Brien's bar and restaurant.
August 29, 2005 marked a pivotal moment in Reggie's life as Hurricane Katrina ravaged his city. As did many other 9th Ward natives, he evacuated to Houston following the storm. Displaced in Houston, Ford tirelessly sharpened his skills in painting while waiting for Katrina's flood waters to be drained. In March 2006, Ford happily returned to New Orleans where he pursued his career as a full-time artist at Dutch Alley Artist’s Co-op. In the first year of his professional career, Reggie’s popularity grew as he was featured in newspapers, magazine articles, and made numerous TV appearances.
Since the pandemic in 2020, Reggie has become a philanthropist and community activist, volunteering daily at Lincoln Beach by picking up litter and helping to restore seven acres of city-owned beachfront property. He has advocated for funds to reopen Lincoln Beach, closed since 1965 when segregation ended. The spirit of New Orleans is alive in Reggie Ford as it flows from his brush to his paintings into the hearts of those who see his works. Experience the magic for yourself by visiting Jackson Square at the corner of St. Ann and Dumaine Street every Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., or book him to paint live at your next event.
Mona Lisa Saloy, Ph.D., Louisiana Poet Laureate (2021-2023), is an author, folklorist, Louisiana Folklife Commissioner, educator, and scholar of Creole culture in articles, documentaries, and poems about Black New Orleans before and after Katrina; currently Conrad N. Hilton Endowed Professor of English at Dillard University; poetry books: Red Beans & Ricely Yours, won the T.S. Eliot Prize and the PEN/Oakland Josephine Miles Award. Second Line Home, celebrates New Orleans Black Creole culture. Recent pubs: The Chicago Quarterly Review, Vol 33; Black FIRE!!! This Time Anthology; and in Tribes journal NYC, 2022; Persimmon journal, 2023. Her new collection Black Creole Chronicles: Poems (University of New Orleans Press 2023), choice for ONE BOOK ONE NEW ORLEANS 2024. NATIONAL PECAN TORTE DAY
National Pecan Torte Day on August 22 recognizes a delicious pecan treat. Of all pecan recipes, the torte delivers a decadent dessert that's also versatile.
As a baked specialty, tortes become the centerpiece of desserts. Tortes provide a delicious choice of fillings such as whipped cream, buttercream, mousse, jam, fruits or nuts. The baker often glazes and garnishes the torte once it is cooled. Generally made with little to no flour, tortes use ground nuts or breadcrumbs, along with sugar, eggs, and flavorings instead.
Did you know the pecan tree is the only nut tree native to North America?
Pecan Benefits
While sweetening up your pecans tends to dilute the benefits, keep in mind that indulging in moderation is ok. However, we know how difficult that can be when you #CelebrateEveryDay. Pecans do deliver some healthy perks, though.
First off, pecans pack in more than 19 vitamins and minerals. Some of the ones with some nutritional punch include vitamins A, B, and E. Add to that folic acid, calcium, potassium, and zinc and pecans deserve several celebrations.
Beyond the vital nutrients mentioned above, pecans also provide healthy fats in abundance. These oils are essential to heart health.
Combine the high fiber content with the natural energy provided by pecans, and this feel-good nut sends good vibes all day long. So, even if you celebrate with a small slice of pecan torte, add extra pecans on the side to balance out those naughty calories.

LSU Athletics is proud to announce its year-long celebration of 100 Years in Tiger Stadium, highlighted by stadium upgrades, events, storytelling initiatives, and a season-long celebration throughout the 2024 campaign.
Tiger Stadium, one of America’s most iconic sporting venues, first opened its gates on Thanksgiving Day, November 27, 1924. Since then, the Tigers have won 450 contests in Death Valley, which has been home to two Heisman Trophy winners, four national championship teams, and 12 SEC title-winning squads.
Included in the celebration are several upgrades to Tiger Stadium, including a new videoboard and lighting system, as well as other upgrades designed to enhance the game day experience. Other events and celebrations will be announced throughout the year.
The 2024 home schedule features several marquee matchups, including home contests against Oklahoma, UCLA, and Alabama. Information on the full 2024 schedule and season tickets will be announced in the coming weeks.
One of the most legendary stadiums in all of college football, Tiger Stadium has been called “the best place in the world to watch a sporting event” by ESPN and “the pound-for-pound king of noise in college football.”
Entering its centennial season in 2024, Tiger Stadium has been a cornerstone of LSU Athletics and the Louisiana community for almost a century, hosting numerous NFL superstars, Heisman Trophy winners, and Hall of Famers since its opening in 1924. It serves as a sporting, cultural, and commercial hub for LSU Athletics, which contributes an estimated $500 million of economic activity for the state of Louisiana annually.

An eclectic group of adults… playing six mid-pubescents, vie for the spelling championship of a lifetime. While candidly disclosing hilarious and touching stories from their home lives, the tweens spell their way through a series of (potentially made-up) words, hoping never to hear the soul-crushing, pout-inducing, life un-affirming “ding” of the bell that signals a spelling mistake. Six spellers enter; one speller leaves a champion! At least the losers get a juice box. [Rated: PG-13]

New Orleans: The New Orleans Jazz Museum is more than a building; it is a living embodiment of New Orleans Jazz culture and music in New Orleans. This is due to the vision of one person: Greg Lambousy, Executive Director of the New Orleans Jazz Museum.
Through Greg Lambousy and his staff’s efforts, the New Orleans Jazz Museum has become the epicenter of the New Orleans Jazz scene. From festivals like the Danny Barker Banjo and Guitar Festival, Satchmo Summerfest, Jazz on the Balcony, Weekly free Jazz performances, and the most significant exhibits relative to New Orleans and early Jazz history presented in the correct cultural context, the City of New Orleans.
To paraphrase the great Professor Longhair, “When you come to New Orleans, be sure to go see the New Orleans Jazz Museum.”.
Presentation, 7:30 PM, August 23 at the George and Joyce Wein Jazz & Heritage Center, 1225 N. Rampart St, NOLA. Free Admission RSVP preferred to: festguide@gmail
Greg Lambousy is the Executive Director of the New Orleans Jazz Museum. Before accepting this position, Lambousy was Director of Curatorial Services for the National World War II Museum. He began his career at the New Orleans Museum of Art and later moved to the Louisiana State Museum (LSM). During his twenty-year tenure at the LSM, Lambousy managed the institution’s collections of more than 500,000 artifacts and other historical items, directed improvements to collections storage at the New Orleans Mint, developed conservation and digitization projects across collections and within the Louisiana Historical Center archives, conducted oral histories and guided the selection and accession of materials related to the State’s history. Since 2016, as Executive Director of the New Orleans Jazz Museum, Lambousy has led the expansion of the Museum in programming, education, exhibitions, international relations, and the development of the Gallatin Street Records label. Visitation has increased fourfold since 2016, and revenues from grants, sponsorships, and events have funded operations, while capital programs have advanced the development of the Museum’s Performance Center and Herb Alpert Education Wing, among other aspects of the Museum’s campus

Starts at The Contemporary Arts Center!
6-7pm Intro to Swing
For total beginners to swing dancing or dancing of any kind. Also for those looking to refresh their basics and learn some ragtime dances. We use these pre-swing era dances to teach beginners how to step on rhythm, step on rhythm while connected to another person, how to connect in order to lead or follow, you'll learn to syncopate your footwork, and then we'll slowly start to let go of one hand and create the beginnings of what will eventually be a bad-ass swing out.
7:30-8:30 Lindy Hop Vocab - Intermediate Level
This class is gonna give you some must know moves, some technique, some philosophy, and of course, we'll continue to clarify and polish up your swing outs.
No partner required to take either of these classes. Come alone or with friends!

Comedy House New Orleans
The most unique comedy show in New Orleans is The Open Mic From Hell, hosted by Chris Trew (as seen on MTV, Comedy Central, America's Got Talent)
CHNO ( Comedy house New Orleans)
609-610 Fulton St
New Orleans, LA 70130
Mon, August 19
8:00 pm - 10:00 pm
(Entry at 7:30 pm)
The Open Mic From Hell is the most unique night of comedy in New Orleans.
Everything about the show is chaotic and unpredictable in the most beautifully hilarious way.
The list of performers? A total mystery.
The jokes they’ll tell? Nobody knows, not even them.
How does it work? Comedians sign-up on the list an hour before showtime. At least 13 names get pulled out of the bucket.
When a name gets pulled they come on stage and make a choice - do they do an entirely new set based on words from the audience, or a special challenge set.
Past challenges have had comics doing their set outside on the street, with noise canceling headphones on, and with a designated heckler in the crowd. We are always adding new, improved, and ridiculous challenges to the show.

University of Holy Cross to hold Constitutional Carry & Self Defense Class August 29
Public confusion still swirls around Louisiana’s new firearm carry laws
New Orleans – The University of Holy Cross, in conjunction with Pierre Basic Guns, is hosting two gun safety and self-defense workshops on its Algiers campus on Thursday, August 29, 2024, to help Louisiana residents and the greater UHC community better understand the nuances of the new constitutional carry laws in the State of Louisiana and how the new laws impact their rights and responsibilities. Sponsored by the United States Concealed Carry Association (USCCA), these workshops are designed to educate the public on the legal aspects of self-defense and carrying firearms.
The workshops will be held on August 29, 2024, with two available sessions: 3:30 - 5:30 p.m. or 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. Both sessions will be conducted at the University of Holy Cross Moreau Center, located at 4123 Woodland Drive in New Orleans.
Each session will last approximately two hours and is open to anyone 18 years and older who wishes to deepen their understanding of this significant legal change regarding the legalities of carrying a firearm in public.
“The need for clear and accurate information is greater than ever,” says University of Holy Cross Police Chief and Director of Public Safety Marshall E. Pierre, Sr. “We are excited to host these informational workshops so our community can feel more educated and empowered about self-defense, especially around the subject of carrying firearms.”
Participants will gain valuable insights into their rights and the best practices for responsible gun ownership and self-defense. These sessions aim to empower attendees with the knowledge needed to navigate the legal landscape confidently and responsibly.
The workshops will cover critical topics such as:
- The implications of being armed in public
- Staying safe by avoiding danger
- Pre-threat indicators
- De-escalation
- Using force
- Seeking further training
- Differences between carrying with a permit vs. without a permit in Louisiana
"I have conducted several of these events, and I've found that many participants are often unaware of the specifics of the law, including what constitutes a justified act of self-defense," says Pierre Basic, founder of Pierre Basic Guns. "One of the most surprising aspects for attendees is learning about the restriction on carrying within 1,000 feet of a school zone without a permit."
To register for a session or to learn more about the workshop series, please contact Pierre Basic Guns at (555) 123-4567 or visit their website at www.pierrebasicguns.com.

It’s Fettuccine Frenzy at Middendorf’s Manchac & Middendorf’s Slidell! Every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday in September, handmade paper-thin fettuccine is on the menu.
This mouth-watering dish is served with your choice of classic Alfredo or Marinara Sauce and topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese with optional add-ons of shrimp, crabmeat and chicken.
- Fettuccine with Alfredo Sauce topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano Cheese
- Fettuccine with Marinara Sauce topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano Cheese
- Optional add-ons:
- Shrimp
- Crabmeat
- Chicken
- Side of Fettuccine topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano Cheese
Fun Facts:
- Our handmade, paper-thin fettuccine was a guest favorite at Bella Luna in the French Quarter. Bella Luna was a fine dining restaurant owned and operated by Horst and Karen Pfeifer. It closed due to Hurricane Katrina and never reopened. The memory of Bella Luna lives on through Fettuccine Frenzy at Middendorf’s. Same Pasta. Same Taste. None of the Fancy.
- Middendorf’s Owner and European Master Chef Horst Pfeifer makes the fettuccine from scratch which consists solely of Semolina flour and eggs. It’s a very time consuming process to make the fettuccine so paper-thin, but it’s definitely worth it.
- Fettuccine is available all day (lunch and dinner).
- Our full menu is also available.
- Uncooked fettuccine is also available for purchase to make a quick meal at home.
We hope you can join us for Fettuccine Frenzy — Every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday in September!
