BATHTUB PARTY DAY

Bathtub Party Day encourages us all to skip the ordinary shower and linger in the tub instead. On December 5th, add some suds to the tub and pamper yourself.

A bathtub party sounds suspiciously like a crowded affair, but it doesn't have to be. Granted, if you have young children, it's a time saver to plunk two or three of them in the tub at once. Getting them all suds up and playing with the water toys are some of the more memorable times raising children. It also saves water while everyone has some good clean fun.

For the adults, the benefits of a quiet soak in the tub add up quickly.

  • A steamy bath during cold and flu season helps to clear our sinuses and improve our oxygen intake. It also increases our circulation.
  • The warm water reduces inflammation, easing achy joints and sore muscles. It also helps relieve stress.
  • Dropping temperatures outside mean cold hands and feet, or just a chilled body in general. A soak in a warm tub warms us right up.
  • Our skin loves the steam from the bath, but be sure to moisturize, too. Add bath oil to your bathwater to gain the most benefit from your Bathtub Party.

Enjoy all the benefits of a Bathtub Party and celebrate with bubbles of all kinds!

Temperatures are expected to decline through much of the late afternoon and evening Thursday, dipping to near or below freezing overnight across southeast Louisiana.

On the northshore, where a cold weather advisory will be in effect from midnight to 8 a.m. Friday, temperatures will plummet to the upper 20s or low 30s overnight, according to the National Weather Service. Cities affected include Hammond, Slidell and Mandeville.

Grigsby said north winds of up to 10 to 15 mph will make it feel even colder, with wind chills in the teens.

Similarly chilly temperatures are expected overnight in Baton Rouge. From New Orleans south to Grand Isle, the lows will be the 30s and 40s, Grigsby said.

Residents of the region should take care to protect plants, especially finicky tropical ones, bring pets indoors and bundle up, Grigsby said.

Pipes, however, shouldn't be an issue — even on the northshore. Grigsby said pipes tend to burst when temperatures reach 25 degrees and lower for an extended period of time.

"We're not forecasting that to occur," Grigsby said, "so that part is good."

After a brisk Friday with highs in the low 50s, the weekend is expected to warm back up. Daytime highs on Saturday should be in the 60s, Grigsby said, followed by afternoon highs in the 70s on Sunday.

Deer Park Bradley

Wow, I had no idea about the origin story of Rudolph the Red-Nose Reindeer! If you aren't familiar with it either, read below:

As the holiday season of 1938 came to Chicago, Bob May wasn’t feeling much comfort or joy. A 34-year-old ad writer for Montgomery Ward, May was exhausted and nearly broke. His wife, Evelyn, was bedridden, on the losing end of a two-year battle with cancer. This left Bob to look after their four-year old-daughter, Barbara.

One night, Barbara asked her father, “Why isn’t my mommy like everybody else’s mommy?” As he struggled to answer his daughter’s question, Bob remembered the pain of his own childhood. A small, sickly boy, he was constantly picked on and called names. But he wanted to give his daughter hope and show her that being different was nothing to be ashamed of. More than that, he wanted her to know that he loved her and would always take care of her. So, he began to spin a tale about a reindeer with a bright red nose who found a special place on Santa’s team. Barbara loved the story so much that she made her father tell it every night before bedtime. As he did, it grew more elaborate. Because he couldn’t afford to buy his daughter a gift for Christmas, Bob decided to turn the story into a homemade picture book.

In early December, Bob’s wife died. Though he was heartbroken, he kept working on the book for his daughter. A few days before Christmas, he reluctantly attended a company party at Montgomery Ward. His co-workers encouraged him to share the story he’d written. After he read it, there was a standing ovation. Everyone wanted copies of their own. Montgomery Ward bought the rights to the book from their debt-ridden employee. Over the next six years, at Christmas, they gave away six million copies of Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer to shoppers. Every major publishing house in the country was making offers to obtain the book. In an incredible display of good will, the head of the department store returned all rights to Bob May. Four years later, Rudolph had made him into a millionaire.

Now remarried with a growing family, May felt blessed by his good fortune. But there was more to come. His brother-in-law, a successful songwriter named Johnny Marks, set the uplifting story to music. The song was pitched to artists from Bing Crosby on down. They all passed. Finally, Marks approached Gene Autry. The cowboy star had scored a holiday hit with “Here Comes Santa Claus” a few years before. Like the others, Autry wasn’t impressed with the song about the misfit reindeer. Marks begged him to give it a second listen. Autry played it for his wife, Ina. She was so touched by the line “They wouldn’t let poor Rudolph play in any reindeer games” that she insisted her husband record the tune.

Within a few years, it had become the second best-selling Christmas song ever, right behind “White Christmas.” Since then, Rudolph has come to life in TV specials, cartoons, movies, toys, games, coloring books, greeting cards and even a Ringling Bros. circus act. The little, red-nosed reindeer dreamed up by Bob May and immortalized in song by Johnny Marks has come to symbolize Christmas as much as Santa Claus, evergreen trees and presents. As the last line of the song says, “He’ll go down in history.”

We're well and truly into the holiday season now. Heading downtown for shopping gave way to going to the mall. The malls emptied out in favor of the big-box stores, and now, we all just order online. We'll keep the flame burning for the big department stores here.

One Story

Big Bingle on Canal Street

Mister Bingle continued to dominate Maison Blanche's advertising into the 1980s. Emile Alline's snow-elf went huge in 1983. The store contracted with Kern Studios to create a massive Mr. Bingle in fiberglass. Big Bingle debuted on the front of 901 Canal Street in 1983.

This wasn't the first "Big Bingle" on the store. Santa shared Canal Street with his new friend in 1952. Two years later, Bingle rode on the back of Santa's sleigh. Mr. Bingle made his presence known in a huge way in MB's print advertising. By the 1960s, the Bingle puppet took to television, with Oscar Isentrout controlling his movements and providing his voice.

Morning cartoon shows evolved from the 1960s to the 1980s. So, Mr. Bingle returned to print advertising. The store changed its decorating style in the mid-1970s. The oversized panels on the second floor were decorated for holidays and events year-round. From Christmas to the Sugar Bowl to the Fourth of July, MB added color to the thirteen-story grey building. In 1979, the Sternbergs of Baton Rouge acquired City Stores, the holding company that owned MB. The new management decided it was time for a change to the front of Canal Street. They turned to the largest float-builders in town. Big Bingle went up, along with a poem telling his story.

The Sternbergs later sold MB to Mercantile Stores. In 1998, Little Rock-based Dillard's acquired Maison Blanche. Alas, when they acquired MB, Dillard's decided to close Canal Street. Dillard's still owns Mr. Bingle and sells Bingle merch every holiday season. They attempted to hang Big Bingle on the side of the Dillard's store at Lakeside Mall, but reaction from New Orleanians was so negative, the chain returned him to storage. In early 2005, the Friends of City Park convinced Dillard's to donate Big Bingle to the park. The plan was to feature the snow elf during the park's "Celebration in the Oaks" events that fall. Big Bingle moved to the park, and craftsmen worked through the summer to restore and spruce him up. Even in spite of Hurricane Katrina in August, Big Bingle made his debut at Celebration in the Oaks after Thanksgiving. He provided a great morale boost for a city still reeling from the Federal Flood.

Mr. Bingle's been part of City Park's holiday season now almost twenty years. He brings back memories for MB shoppers and inspires young folks who know him as a New Orleans icon.

NATIONAL SACHER TORTE DAY

If you like chocolate and you like cake, then National Sacher Torte Day on December 5th is a perfect day for you! The layered ingredients make this dessert a delicious torte!

Sacher Torte, also known as Sachertorte, is a unique type of chocolate cake. Austrian Franz Sacher invented it in 1832. Vienna considers the Sachertorte one of their most famous culinary specialties.

At the age of 16, Franz Sacher was only an apprentice to the chef when Prince Wenzel Von Metternich ordered a special dessert from the kitchen for his guests. With the chef ill, Sacher stepped in for his superior and created what is known worldwide as the Sacher Torte.

His son, Eduard, went on to perfect this decadent dessert. He created the Sacher Torte by layering apricot jam between a rich, chocolate sponge cake and topped it with a layer of chocolate icing.

The original recipe is a secret protected today and served exclusively by the Sacher Hotels in Vienna and Salzburg.

Cake vs. Torte

Cakes and tortes are very similar. In fact, tortes are a type of cake. It is the ingredients that make a torte a torte. Like the ingredients that make an angel food cake bake up light and tall, a torte's ingredients give it a heavier base and a tighter crumb. Additionally, tortes tend to be layered crosswise with ganache, frosting, or fruit. Tortes use very little flour and use ground nuts or breadcrumbs instead.

There are various tortes to make. Some tortes only have a couple of layers. However, others stack up thin, beautiful layers full of rich flavor.

What does "pragmatic" mean?

Dogmatic

Esoteric

Realistic

Idealistic

pragmatic Pronunciation: /præɡˈmætɪk/

Definition: Pragmatic refers to a practical and realistic approach towards solving problems or making decisions. It involves focusing on what is practical and achievable rather than theoretical or idealistic solutions.

Origin: The word "pragmatic" derives from the Greek word "pragma," meaning "deed" or "action." It entered the English language in the mid-17th century, influenced by the Latin word "pragmaticus" meaning "skilled in business."

Example: In a team meeting, Sarah's pragmatic suggestion to break down the project into smaller tasks and assign responsibilities effectively improved the team's efficiency.

Realistic can be seen as synonymous with being pragmatic. When someone takes a sensible approach, they prioritize practicality, common sense, and rational decision-making. A pragmatic individual focuses on finding realistic solutions based on the current circumstances and available resources, rather than being driven solely by ideals or emotions. By considering the potential outcomes and weighing the pros and cons, a sensible approach ensures that actions are taken in a logical and practical manner. This approach is essential in problem-solving, decision-making, and navigating complex situations, as it promotes effective and efficient solutions.

Duryea Motor Wagon: America’s First Successful Gasoline Car

The Duryea Motor Wagon holds a unique place in automotive history as the first successful gasoline-powered car in the United States.

Built in 1893 by brothers Charles and Frank Duryea in Springfield, Massachusetts, this innovative vehicle combined a single-cylinder gasoline engine with a modified horse-drawn carriage chassis.

It wasn’t just an engineering milestone—it marked the dawn of America’s automobile age.

Achievements

First U.S. Automobile Race Winner: In 1895, the Duryea Motor Wagon clinched victory in the first-ever American automobile race, held in Chicago. Covering 54 miles in just over 10 hours, it averaged a groundbreaking 7.5 mph despite rough terrain and harsh weather.

First Car Sold in the U.S.: In 1896, the Duryea Motor Wagon Company became the first American automaker to sell a gasoline-powered car.

First Production Automaker in America: The company produced 13 cars in its first year, making it the pioneer of commercial car production in the United States.

Duryea's Success and Challenges

The Duryea brothers capitalized on their early achievements, becoming synonymous with the birth of the American auto industry.

However, internal disputes between Charles and Frank led to operational struggles. Frank focused on manufacturing, while Charles aimed for more experimental ventures, creating friction within the company.

Although the Duryea Motor Wagon Company gained initial fame, competition from more organized and better-funded automakers like Ford and Oldsmobile quickly overshadowed it. The company’s relatively high prices and lack of scalability made it difficult to compete in an emerging market demanding affordability and mass production.

The End of the Road

By 1901, the company had ceased production. Frank continued to innovate, launching the Stevens-Duryea Company, which produced high-quality, luxury cars. Stevens-Duryea gained some success in the early 1900s but also fell victim to changing market dynamics, eventually shutting down in the 1920s.

Legacy

The Duryea Motor Wagon laid the foundation for the American auto industry, demonstrating the potential of gasoline-powered vehicles and inspiring countless innovators. While the company itself did not last long, its achievements sparked a revolution that transformed transportation forever.

Today, the original Duryea Motor Wagon can be admired at museums, serving as a reminder of the vision and ingenuity that kick-started a global industry.

For the third year, the Children’s Hospital New Orleans Holiday Parade will get the yuletide season rolling, Crescent City style. With 30 themed floats, ridden by costumers tossing a blizzard of throws, plus 27 bands and marching groups, the parade is like a preview of Carnival. But there’s a difference.

No other New Orleans procession includes giant lighter-than-air balloons, bobbing along the route amid the other attractions. In the past two years, a 40-foot Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer, a gargantuan candy cane, a snowflake, a gingerbread man, a Hanukkah ornament and Frosty the Snowman have floated over the crowds.

This year, parade producer Barry Kern promises there will be a few new balloons in the mix. In addition to floats bearing a red toy train, a Christmas alligator and Santa on his sled, Kern said parade-goers should look for giant self-propelled snow globes this year.

The parade rolls through the French Quarter and the Central Business District at 11 a.m. on Dec. 7.

Patients at Children’s Hospital are creating custom-decorated plastic ornaments that will serve as signature throws this year. Each ornament will be marked with the patient’s name.

Rolling fundraiser

Unlike the Mardi Gras season, during which commercial advertising is prohibited, the floats in the holiday parade are sponsored by businesses and organizations. All proceeds from the commercial tie-ins benefit Children’s Hospital. WDSU television plans a telethon-style broadcast to accompany the event.

With support from the state’s Explore Louisiana tourism campaign, the parade is meant to help promote New Orleans as a holiday season destination, according to parade organizers.

Grinchy power lines and rain

The first two Children’s Hospital Holiday Parades succeeded despite complications. During the first parade, the hovering balloons were forced to limbo beneath streetcar power lines on St. Charles Avenue, slowing the procession. The problem led to a new route in the second year. Rain pelted the 2023 parade, though the event still drew crowds.

Unlike in past years, there will be no post-parade party in Lafayette Square.

The parade will line up on Elysian Fields Avenue near Washington Square Park. It will proceed uptown on North Peters Street, merge onto Decatur Street, turn right on Canal Street, U-turn at Burgundy Street, turn right on Tchoupitoulas Street, ending at Andrew Higgins Drive.

Bishop's Visitation

On December 8th, please make plans to attend the 10 am service as we welcome Bishop Shannon Duckworth to Christ Episcopal Church. We look forward to her being with us as we celebrate Eucharist, baptisms, and confirmations.

Please note: There will be only one celebration of the Holy Eucharist on the 8th. The 8 am and 5 pm services will resume on the 15th.

Giving With Gratitude Picnic

Immediately following the 10 am service on December 8th, the Stewardship team has planned an amazing church-wide picnic. We hope all parishioners, visitors, and guests will join us for our "Giving With Gratitude" lunch as we celebrate the Bishop's visitation and give thanks to all parishioners for supporting our 2025 stewardship campaign.

Advent Evensong

Also on December 8th, make plans to attend Evensong at 5 pm in the Church. This is a beautiful service of song and prayer. During the pilgrimage to England this fall, members of our congregation had the opportunity to worship in Canterbury Cathedral and enjoy Evensong there. We are grateful to our choir for their making Evensong possible here at our church as part of our Advent celebrations.

The Open Mic From Hell is the most unique night of comedy in New Orleans.

Everything about the show is chaotic and unpredictable in the most beautifully hilarious way.

The list of performers? A total mystery.

The jokes they’ll tell? Nobody knows, not even them.

How does it work? Comedians sign-up on the list an hour before showtime. At least 13 names get pulled out of the bucket.

When a name gets pulled they come on stage and make a choice - do they do an entirely new set based on words from the audience, or a special challenge set.

Past challenges have had comics doing their set outside on the street, with noise canceling headphones on, and with a designated heckler in the crowd. We are always adding new, improved, and ridiculous challenges to the show.

Join the award-winning (1st place, baby!) NOLA Jitterbugs for a 6-week series with live music in the last class!

Our live music classes with local musicians and culture bearers, as well as our overall emphasis on music appreciation is what makes our lessons stand out among the rest!

Starts at The Contemporary Arts Center!

6-7pm Intro to Swing

For total beginners to swing dancing or dancing of any kind. Also for those looking to refresh their basics and learn some ragtime dances. We use these pre-swing era dances to teach beginners how to step on rhythm, step on rhythm while connected to another person, how to connect in order to lead or follow, you'll learn to syncopate your footwork, and then we'll slowly start to let go of one hand and create the beginnings of what will eventually be a bad-ass swing out.

7:30-8:30 Lindy Hop Vocab - Intermediate Level

This class is gonna give you some must know moves, some technique, some philosophy, and of course, we'll continue to clarify and polish up your swing outs.

No partner required to take either of these classes. Come alone or with friends!

Friday, December 13 · 5 - 6:30pm CST

Location

The Garden District Book Shop

2727 Prytania Street New Orleans, LA 70130

Gypsy-Rose Blanchard will be at the Garden District Book Shop December 13 for an author meet & greet for her memoir My Time to Stand.

A victim of her mother’s Munchausen by proxy and child abuse survivor, Gypsy-Rose Blanchard’s unique and controversial case made headlines across the world. Now, she’s finally free to start living her life on her terms—and to tell her own story as only she can.

Forced to use a wheelchair in public and endure a lifetime of faux illness, fraud, and exploitation, Gypsy was subjected not only to her mother’s medical, physical, and emotional abuse, but deprived of childhood milestones. Prevented from attending school or socializing, Gypsy’s formative years were defined by pain and isolation.

After serving 8 years in prison for the role she played in her mother Dee Dee’s murder, Gypsy is embracing her fresh start—and reminding all of us that it’s never too late. Featuring Blanchard family photos and new facts about Gypsy’s life that she previously kept private, My Time to Stand offers an unprecedented look at the real Gypsy proudly embarking on her ongoing journey to recovery and self-discovery.

The evening will begin at 5:00 PM. Early Bird tickets are now on sale for $35 and include a signed copy of My Time to Stand and a photo opp with Gypsy. Guests are encouraged to knock out some holiday shopping while they wait around The Rink.

Super Bowl LIX may happen more than three weeks before Fat Tuesday, but the host committee wants to make sure the city -- and the throngs of visitors in town for the NFL's championship game -- get the carnival experience.

The day before the game, February 8, there will be a Mardi Gras-style parade complete with elaborate floats, marching bands, and throws.

Our partners at NOLA.com report details of the parade are still being finalized, but float-builder Barry Kern says it will likely be a 20-float parade made up of signature floats from various krewes.

And because it is not an official carnival parade, corporate sponsors will also be a part of it.

Todd Graves, founder of Baton Rouge-based Raising Cane's Chicken Fingers, will serve as grand marshal.

Rather than follow one of the traditional Mardi Gras routes, the Super Bowl parade will line up on Elysian Fields in the Marigny, parade up Decatur Street along the French Quarter, then take Tchoupitoulas St. to Poydras, turn up to St. Charles Ave., then proceed along St. Charles to St. Joseph St. just before reaching Harmony Circle.

Super Bowl LIX pre-game show features all New Orleans and Louisiana musicians

The NFL announced on Thanksgiving that the Super Bowl LIX pre-game telecast will spotlight singers and musicians from New Orleans and Louisiana.

Jon Batiste, who grew up in Kenner and attended St. Augustine High School and the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts, will sing the national anthem in the Caesars Superdome ahead of kickoff on Feb. 9.

Troy "Trombone Shorty" Andrews, who grew up in Treme, will team up with contemporary Christian singer and Lafayette native Lauren Daigle to perform "America the Beautiful." They have previously made guest appearances with one another onstage and on recordings.

And contemporary R&B singer Ledisi, who was born and raised in New Orleans before moving to California, will perform "Lift Every Voice and Sing."

“We’re honored to work with this year’s pregame lineup to celebrate the rich musical legacy of New Orleans and the entire state,” said Seth Dudowsky, head of music at the NFL, in a news release. "The Super Bowl is a rare moment to unite fans around the world, and this year’s performers will bring the energy, soul and vibrant sounds of the region to a global stage, as we kickoff Super Bowl LIX with a celebration to remember.”

Just two days after Super Bowl LIX, Jefferson Parish will celebrate its 200th birthday on Feb. 11. Bicentennial festivities kicked off at the State of Jefferson address Tuesday with the unveiling of the official poster, depicting a pelican before the Mississippi River in vivid pink and blue hues. It is illustrated by Louisiana artist Becky Fos, known for designing the 2023 state "I Voted" sticker, modeled after the Louisiana state flag.

A limited supply of signed and numbered posters can be purchased for $150, with proceeds going toward the Jefferson Community Foundation.

Courtesy of Jefferson Parish

The parish will celebrate the bicentennial on Feb. 11 with a Light the Night event, followed by a community-wide king cake party at Lakeside Mall on Feb. 15.

The following month, a bicentennial-themed Senior Expo will take place at the Alario Center on March 20, and a "Park to Park" 10K run will happen March 22 at Lafreniere Park.

Festivities for the parish's 200th birthday will come to a close June 14 with the Bicentennial Ball at Lakeside Mall, hosted by the Jefferson Community Foundation. Lee Sheng said she wanted parish events to involve the entire community and asked residents and local business owners to get involved.

"I want our bicentennial to feel like everybody's a part of it," Lee Sheng said in her address.
