Great wines begin in the vineyard. Catena's vision is to make rich and unforgettable wines that are true to the special place they come from. The story of Catena is the story of Argentine wine. Founded in 1902, Argentina’s Bodega Catena Zapata is known for its pioneering role in resurrecting Malbec and in discovering extreme high altitude terroirs in the Andean foothills of Mendoza. The family’s Adrianna Vineyard at almost 5,000 feet elevation has been called the Grand Cru of South America.
We have poured our lives, our passion, our sweat, and our spirit into transforming a scrub-laden, high-altitude oasis in a desert into some of the most beautiful vineyards in the world. This is the story of how we blended family and historic vines with state-of-the-art viticulture to create wines that are both spectacular and true to their terroir.
It is a tale that travels from 19th-century Italy to the limestone soils of Mendoza, with serendipitous detours to California's sun-drenched Napa Valley and the king-making vineyards of Bordeaux. Drawing from the past and uncovering the secrets of nature toward the future, we are proud to make our treasured terroir in Mendoza the fountainhead for the wines that carry our name.
