NATIONAL HUMAN TRAFFICKING AWARENESS DAY

National Human Trafficking Awareness Day on January 11th brings attention to a crime that leaves a lasting toll on human life, families, and communities around the world.

Beginning in 2010, by Presidential Proclamation, each January has been designated National Slavery and Human Trafficking Prevention Month. Following the start of National Slavery and Human Trafficking Prevention Month, with the help of non-government organizations, National Human Trafficking Day began and is observed annually on January 11th.

Human trafficking is considered a modern form of slavery. This illegal act involves the use of force, fraud, or coercion to obtain labor or sex. Traffickers use violence, manipulation, or false promises to lure their victims into trafficking situations. Trafficking victims usually experience physical and/or psychological abuse. They might also endure sexual abuse, food and sleep deprivation, threats to family members, and isolation from the outside world. Family members of the victim may also get threatened.

The goal of the day is to bring greater awareness to the crime of sex trafficking. Each year, organizations around the globe provide support to communities, training to volunteers and educational events to increase awareness.

Barbara S. Beckman Music Room, 520 Royal Street

Free admission and no RSVP required

Join THNOC staff for a short program exploring the history of the beautifully restored Aeolian residential player pipe organ. Listen to a musical demonstration and discover the significance of this rare and technologically advanced musical instrument.

In the early 20th century, having a player organ in the home was a luxury reserved for the most opulent residences, allowing the owner to have access to recorded music before radios and phonographs were commonplace. Tobacco magnate William Ratcliffe Irby remodeled the property at 520 Royal Street—now part of THNOC’s exhibition center—to serve as his personal residence starting in 1918. In the process he installed a player organ in the entry room to his lavish third-floor apartment. The instrument, built by the Aeolian Company of New York, is one of a handful that has survived to this day in its original location and in working condition, after a meticulous restoration by the Holtkamp Organ Company.

What is the modern equivalent of the word "clepe"?

Call

The modern equivalent of the archaic term "clepe" is "call." Both words share the fundamental meaning of naming or referring to something or someone. However, "call" has seamlessly integrated into contemporary English, while "clepe" has fallen into disuse. "Call" has become the go-to verb for summoning, designating, or identifying people, objects, or actions in our modern world. It effortlessly captures the essence of communication and connection, whether it be through phone conversations, voicemail, or simply shouting someone's name. In a world driven by technology and rapid communication, "call" has emerged as the perfect modern substitute for the antiquated term "clepe."

Lost in Translation: Hilarious and Puzzling Language Mishaps

Have you ever found yourself in a foreign country, desperately trying to communicate with locals, only to end up in a hilarious or puzzling language mishap? Language barriers can sometimes lead to amusing and confusing situations that leave us scratching our heads. In this blog post, we will explore some of these lost-in-translation moments that are bound to make you chuckle.

The Art of Menu Confusion

One of the most common places where language mishaps occur is at restaurants. No matter how much we try to decipher the menu or ask for recommendations, sometimes things just get lost in translation.

Picture this: You're sitting at a cozy café in Paris, excited to try some authentic French cuisine. You take a look at the menu and come across a dish called "coq au vin." It sounds fancy, so you decide to give it a try. Little did you know that "coq" means "rooster" in French, and you just ordered a dish made with rooster meat. Suddenly, your excitement turns into bewilderment as you imagine a rooster arriving at your table instead of a delicious coq au vin.

Lost in Translation Signs

Signs are meant to provide information and guidance, but sometimes they can be more confusing than helpful when translated incorrectly. These linguistic mishaps can lead to some hilarious and head-scratching moments.

Imagine you're walking through Tokyo, exploring the vibrant streets filled with colorful signs. Suddenly, you stumble upon a sign that says "Beware of the Leopard." Your mind starts racing, wondering why there would be a leopard roaming the streets of Tokyo. However, upon closer inspection, you realize that the sign is meant to say "Beware of the Ladder." A simple translation error turned a mundane warning into an unexpected animal encounter.

Lost in Translation: Words with Multiple Meanings

Some words have different meanings depending on the context or culture. These linguistic nuances can often lead to amusing and confusing situations for non-native speakers.

Let's take the word "gift" as an example. In English, it refers to a present or something given voluntarily. However, in German, "gift" means "poison." Imagine the perplexed expression on someone's face when they receive a beautifully wrapped box and excitedly exclaim, "What a lovely gift!" only to have their German friend look at them in horror, thinking they just received a box of poison.

NATIONAL MILK DAY

National Milk Day on January 11th commemorates the day many think the first milk deliveries in glass bottles began in the United States. Alexander Campbell of the New York Dairy Company professed to the New York State Senate that his company was the first to make these deliveries in 1878.

The United States and Australia export more milk and milk products than any other country. Those products include cheese, yogurt, ice cream, butter, cream, powdered milk, and much more. Throughout the world, more than 6 billion people consume milk and the products we make from it. One of the reasons is because milk provides nutrients such as calcium, potassium, vitamin B12, and vitamin A.

Production History

During the Middle Ages, people called milk the virtuous white liquor because alcoholic beverages were more reliable than water. In 1863, French chemist and biologist Louis Pasteur made it possible for milk and other food and drinks to be stored for more extended periods. He developed a method of killing harmful bacteria that is now called pasteurization.

In 1884, an American doctor, Hervey Thatcher of New York City, developed the first modern glass milk bottle. He called it the "Thatcher's Common Sense Milk Jar." He used a waxed paper disk to seal the milk in the glass bottle. Later, in 1932, plastic-coated paper milk cartons were introduced commercially as a consequence of their invention by Victor W. Farris.

Modern industrial processes use milk to produce casein, whey protein, lactose, condensed milk, powdered milk, and many other food-additive and industrial products.

Animals

  • The females of all mammal species can, by definition, produce milk. However, cow milk dominates commercial production. In 2011. FAO estimates cows produced 85% of all milk worldwide. Apart from cattle, many kinds of livestock contribute milk used by humans for dairy products. These animals include buffalo, goat, sheep, camel, donkey, horse, reindeer, and yak. Like cattle, their milk produces cream, butter, yogurt, kefir, ice cream, and cheese, too.

The Perils of Automated Translation

With the rise of technology, many of us rely on automated translation tools to communicate with people from different countries. While these tools have undoubtedly made communication easier, they are not without their quirks.

Imagine you're using an online translation service to chat with a friend in another language. You want to tell them that you're feeling a bit under the weather, but the translation tool decides to get creative and translates it as "I'm feeling a bit under the water." Suddenly, your friend is left wondering why you feel like you're submerged in H2O.

Lost in Translation: Cultural Misunderstandings

Language mishaps can also occur due to cultural differences and varying interpretations of words or gestures. What might be considered innocent in one culture can be highly offensive in another.

Take the thumbs-up gesture as an example. In many Western countries, it is seen as a positive sign or a way to indicate approval. However, in countries like Iran or Greece, it carries a negative connotation and is equivalent to showing the middle finger. Imagine the confusion and shock on someone's face when they innocently give a thumbs-up to express their approval, only to be met with angry stares.

Embracing the Humor in Language Mishaps

While language mishaps can be embarrassing or confusing in the moment, it's important to embrace the humor in these situations. They remind us of the beautiful diversity of languages and cultures around the world. Instead of getting frustrated, let's enjoy the laughter and learn from these experiences.

In conclusion, lost-in-translation moments can be both hilarious and puzzling. From menu confusion to mistranslated signs, words with multiple meanings, automated translation blunders, and cultural misunderstandings, language barriers can lead to some memorable experiences. So, the next time you find yourself lost in translation, remember to laugh it off and appreciate the richness that different languages bring to our world.

Flambeaux History: It’s a Mardi Gras tradition that has become revered as an art form today, blossoming well beyond the practical purpose it first served. Over the past century and a half, city infrastructure has evolved, and Mardi Gras parades incorporate more high-tech LED lighting. But the flambeaux still evoke charm and nostalgia as they warm up the crowds for Mardi Gras parades in New Orleans even today.

Flambeaux (plural for flambeau, or a flaming torch) comes from the French word flambe, meaning “flame.” The first official Mardi Gras flambeaux debuted with the Mistick Krewe of Comus on Fat Tuesday in 1857.

Initially, the flambeaux were needed for revelers to see the Carnival parades at night. Initially, the flambeaux carried wooden rudimentary torches, which were staves wrapped with lit pine-tar rags. That evolved to oil-burning lanterns mounted on metal trays and long poles to prevent the flames from burning the carriers.

Flambeaux was a tradition that arose out of necessity but also illustrated elements of emerging American culture and social classes, as the flambeaux were initially carried by enslaved people and free men of color, namely Creoles. The torches turned into a spectacle as the men waved and twirled the torches while dancing down the street. Parade-watchers would throw tips to the torch carriers, often 25-cent or 50-cent coins, more in response to the elaborate performances than the light itself.

Out of respect for this long-held tradition, several Mardi Gras krewes still kick off their parades with flambeaux. The torches have been brought into the 21st century with backsplashes on the trays and natural gas for fuel instead of the more dangerous liquid sources. Also, an updated setup using gravity flow from a reservoir keeps four burners blazing no matter how long the parade might last. Parade-goers still offer tips to the flambeaux performers, though dollars often replace the quarters once used.

Flambeaux may no longer be needed for the crowd to see the parade, but they are still vital to the Mardi Gras tradition and likely won’t see their flame burn out anytime soon.

City of New Orleans Encourages Residents to Participate in the Annual Christmas Tree Recycling Program to Rebuild Wetlands

NEW ORLEANS — The City of New Orleans today reminded residents of the annual Christmas Tree Recycling Program to restore our wetlands. For over 25 years, this program has contributed to the restoration of the Bayou Sauvage Urban National Wildlife Refuge, while preventing them from being placed in landfills. The trees also create an important habitat for birds, fish, crabs, crawfish and shrimp.

"Every year, our Christmas trees bring light and happiness into our homes, but their significance goes far beyond spreading holiday joy," said Mayor LaToya Cantrell. "Recycling and placing these trees along our eroding coastline to help rebuild our wetlands will assist in the effort to protect our great city and state for generations to come. This robust tree recycling program is another example of how New Orleans will continue to lead in combatting the global climate crisis while promoting innovative opportunities to create a better, greener and more vibrant community. So far, recycled trees have restored an area of marsh equal to approximately 200 football fields. Thank you to our residents who continue to donate their Christmas trees year after year to enhance our coastline restoration efforts."

The program is coordinated by the City's Office of Resilience and Sustainability (ORS) and Department of Sanitation, in partnership with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) and the Louisiana National Guard.

“We’re bringing attention to the Christmas Tree Recycling Program today because Black Friday and Small Business Saturday are popular days for New Orleanians to buy and decorate live Christmas trees,” said Director of Economic Development Jeff Schwartz. “The City can only accept trees without tinsel and flocking, and we ask residents to please consider this while decorating your tree.”

“While we are making great progress, protecting our natural resources remains more important than ever for New Orleans,” said ORS Deputy Chief Resilience Officer Greg Nichols. "The Christmas Tree Recycling Program is a great way for residents to get involved in the fight to restore our coast.”

Residents are encouraged to place their trees curbside for collection by Department of Sanitation contractors from Jan. 8 - 12, 2024. Trees cannot be flocked, and all ornamentation must be removed before placing them on the curb.  Once they are collected, they will be sorted, bundled and airlifted by helicopter and dropped in targeted sections of the Bayou Sauvage Urban National Wildlife Refuge. The City’s goal is to collect 10,000 trees this year.

“The annual Christmas Tree Drop represents a long-standing partnership between the Louisiana National Guard and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service," said Louisiana National Guard, Chief Warrant Officer 3 Gabriel Ruiz. "It benefits the City of New Orleans and surrounding coastal environment, while also providing valuable training hours for our pilots and crewmembers of the 1st Assault Helicopter Battalion, 244th Aviation Regiment."

“I’d like to thank the residents of New Orleans for sharing their Christmas trees with us each year and making their contribution to coastal restoration," said USFWS Refuge Manager Shelley Stiaes. "Their tradition of donating Christmas trees is helping to rebuild our coastline and build habitat for wildlife."

Pop-Up Trailer Opens

Our king cake trailer on Metairie Road opens! They will be located in the parking lot of The Ridgeway at 2431 Metairie Rd.

They'll be open 7 days a week until Lundi Gras (Feb. 12, 24). If they sell out, they will close early.

NEW ORLEANS  King Cake Drive-Thru will offer a curated selection of Greater New Orleans’ king cakes at your convenience throughout the Mardi Gras season. It will be located at Duckworth Tires’ parking lot, 1009 Metairie Rd., Metairie, Louisiana, 70005.

Chicago-born transplant to New Orleans, Mike Graves, owner of bof bars, a local novelty ice cream company, came up with this idea with his fiancée.

“If New Orleans can do drive-thru daiquiris, it surely can do a King Cake Drive-Thru,” says Graves.

As the 2024 Carnival season drew closer, plans began to form over the holidays, and King Cake Drive-Thru was born. Metairie was chosen specifically to hopefully provide a willing neighborhood accessibility to many different bakeries across the Greater New Orleans area.

A community driven business, King Cake Drive-Thru is not just for the well-known bakery names but also a platform for businesses without their own store-front, as well as up-and-coming bakers.

Expect king cakes from local favorites such as Gambino’s, Brennan’s, Gracious Bakery and Bittersweet Confections. Other lesser known but equally delicious king cakes include Clesi’s Crawfish King Cakes, Empanola’s Guava Cream Cheese King Cakes, Kimi Bakes King Cake Cream Puffs, Vietnamese Doughnguyener’s King Cakes and so much more for the weekly rotating menu.

Other convenience items will be offered such as a party pack complete with plates, napkins, utensils and a king cake knife for on-the-go use.

Graves emphasizes, “Keep your kids in the car. Don’t worry about parking. Pull up and head out. You can grab a favorite or snag a new king cake on the way to the office or on the way home for the family.”

Plans for another King Cake Drive-Thru pop-up location in Houston, Texas is in the works for later in the Mardi Gras season.

Dates/Times:

King Cake Drive-Thru will begin operations on King’s Day, Jan. 6, at 7 a.m. (1009 Metairie Road, Metairie, Louisiana, 70005).

Hours of operation are Friday thru Sunday from 7 a.m. – 7 p.m. (or until sold out) throughout the Mardi Gras season.

Acquistapace’s Queen Cake Marries Two Louisiana Delicacies in One Amazing Cake

POSTED BY: KATY

South Louisiana is known for a wide variety of delicious food: muffalettas, boiled crawfish, grilled oysters, po boys of all varieties, and more. This time of year, however, we are generally focused on just one of our favorites: king cake! (we will soon flip over to crawfish). Long-time, family-owned grocery store, Acquistapace’s in Covington has taken our king cake obsession, swirled it with another south Louisiana favored food and come up with one delicious result: The Queen Cake.

Queen Cake is similar to a berry chantilly cake. It has strawberries and mascarpone cream cheese sandwiched between layers of cake and then it’s topped with even more berries, more mascarpone and whipped cream. In stead of vanilla cake, however, this one features king cake! There are hints of cinnamon throughout the cake and granulated sugar is sprinkled on top.

It’s not surprising this treat is found at Acquistapace’s deep in the heart of Covington. Acquistapace’s has been part of the Covington community since 1963 and they know what their audience likes! They are probably best known for their beer, wine, and spirits selection, but they have a few other tricks up their sleeve–like this cake! Personally I love their meat prices and am sure to pick something up whenever I’m in the neighborhood. As a family-owned grocery store with deep roots in the community, they know what their customers like! This time of year you can find their store full of their king cakes but also full of king cakes from all over the area including a number of bakery cakes produced on the south shore like Caluda’s and Haydel’s.

So go ahead and do yourself a favor before the season is over–run over to Acquistapaces and pick up a Queen’s Cake. That little taste of strawberry will have you ready for spring!

Do you love king cake? We have a guide to all the king cake on the Northshore right here.

Friday Night Wine School, Disco Liquids

January 12, from 5:30 to 7:30 PM. Disco Liquids is a new wholesaler in town that has dedicated its entire portfolio to natural, minimal-intervention wines. While there is no official or regulated definition of natural wine, think of it as the unfiltered, untamed, unphotoshopped version of what we know to be wine. What you can usually count on is that the grapes are hand-picked from sustainable, organic, or biodynamic vineyards. In terms of production, the wine is fermented with no added yeast (ie. native yeasts), no additives are included in fermentation (yeast nutrients, etc) and little or no sulfites are added.

I'll be honest, there is a lot of weird, funky, flawed natural wines out there but if you take the time to find them, there are some great, balanced, delicious expressions. And we've done just that with DJ Piazza, owner/founder of Disco Liquids. He will join us this evening for 5 super fun wines that are near and dear to us from Italy and France. Come check it out! Reserve your spots here, Disco Liquids

Rex den open house will offer a glimpse into the makings of Mardi Gras

Tori McRoberts Hoffpauir of YouthForce NOLA and her children, Lucia, 3, left, and Joshua, 5, look at Mardi Gras floats in the Rex den in New Orleans on Saturday, Jan. 14, 2023.

  • STAFF PHOTO BY SCOTT THRELKELD

Ever wanted to see the Boeuf Gras up close?

Take a gander at the King of Carnival's throne?

It is a month before Twelfth Night and the official beginning of the Carnival season and time to make plans to journey behind the scenes of the Rex parade in a special tour that benefits the Friends of the Cabildo.

The Rex Den Showing Open House and Float Viewing will be at 1 p.m. Jan. 13, 2024, at the 2531 S. Claiborne Ave. location that houses the majestic floats that will roll this season on Feb. 13.

From the iconic floats of the parade like the Butterfly King to His Majesty's Bandwagon, the signature aspects of the procession will be there along with floats that will provide a glimpse into the 2024 theme.

The den also is home to a museum of the Rex Organization and Rex Mart.

Tickets start at $40. Visit friendsofthecabildo.org.

Professor Carl Nivale

Welcoming the new marching krewe, Krewe Mosaïque! They have their first parade on January 13th, from Armstrong Park to Ursuline Convent. Your favorite Professor and Grand Marshal Marty Graw look forward to being there!

#Carnival2024 #MardiGras2024 #OurCarnivalHeritage #krewemosaique

https://www.axios.com/.../new-krewe-mardi-gras-parade...

A new walking krewe will debut for Mardi Gras 2024, marching through the French Quarter on Jan. 13.

Why it matters: The event fills in an otherwise parade-free weekend during the weekslong celebration of Carnival in New Orleans.

What's happening: Krewe Mosaïque will march for 12 blocks from Armstrong Park to the Ursuline Convent for the first time.

  • This year's krewe will max out at 200 members, and organizers are putting an emphasis on DIY elements, handmade throws and cultural or historical relevance to the city.
  • The idea stems from the krewe's founding members preference for DIY costuming and contraption-building.

What she's saying: "Everything is bright and colorful and very unique unto themselves, but when we come together, it's this beautiful experience, like a mosaic," says Krewe Mosaïque founder Terese Aiello.

Join the award-winning (1st place, baby!) NOLA Jitterbugs for a 6-week series with live music in the last class!

Our live music classes with local musicians and culture bearers, as well as our overall emphasis on music appreciation is what makes our lessons stand out among the rest!

Starts at The Contemporary Arts Center!

6-7pm Intro to Swing

For total beginners to swing dancing or dancing of any kind. Also for those looking to refresh their basics and learn some ragtime dances. We use these pre-swing era dances to teach beginners how to step on rhythm, step on rhythm while connected to another person, how to connect in order to lead or follow, you'll learn to syncopate your footwork, and then we'll slowly start to let go of one hand and create the beginnings of what will eventually be a bad-ass swing out.

7:30-8:30 Lindy Hop Vocab - Intermediate Level

This class is gonna give you some must know moves, some technique, some philosophy, and of course, we'll continue to clarify and polish up your swing outs.

No partner required to take either of these classes. Come alone or with friends!

LSU Athletics is proud to announce its year-long celebration of 100 Years in Tiger Stadium, highlighted by stadium upgrades, events, storytelling initiatives, and a season-long celebration throughout the 2024 campaign.

Tiger Stadium, one of America’s most iconic sporting venues, first opened its gates on Thanksgiving Day, November 27, 1924. Since then, the Tigers have won 450 contests in Death Valley, which has been home to two Heisman Trophy winners, four national championship teams, and 12 SEC title-winning squads.

Included in the celebration are several upgrades to Tiger Stadium, including a new videoboard and lighting system, as well as other upgrades designed to enhance the game day experience. Other events and celebrations will be announced throughout the year.

The 2024 home schedule features several marquee matchups, including home contests against Oklahoma, UCLA, and Alabama. Information on the full 2024 schedule and season tickets will be announced in the coming weeks.

One of the most legendary stadiums in all of college football, Tiger Stadium has been called “the best place in the world to watch a sporting event” by ESPN and “the pound-for-pound king of noise in college football.”

Entering its centennial season in 2024, Tiger Stadium has been a cornerstone of LSU Athletics and the Louisiana community for almost a century, hosting numerous NFL superstars, Heisman Trophy winners, and Hall of Famers since its opening in 1924. It serves as a sporting, cultural, and commercial hub for LSU Athletics, which contributes an estimated $500 million of economic activity for the state of Louisiana annually.
