NATIONAL NOTHING DAY

Each year on January 16th, people across the nation recognize National Nothing Day.

The observance was created as a day to provide Americans with one National Day when they can just sit without celebrating, observing or honoring anything. (National Day Calendar only reports the Days, sometimes they may contradict themselves.)

Martin Luther King Jr. Day falls on the third Monday of January which means that one-in-seven January 16th’s will fall on the same day as Nothing Day, effectively usurping the nature of Nothing Day.

While it may be a good day to celebrate nothing at all, we suppose putting nothing in a glass and setting it on a table might suffice for celebration. You might leave your diary page blank every January 16th. Don't mark anything on the calendar on the 16th, either. It would be interesting to see what would happen if you sent a blank email dated January 16th. How many replies would you get saying, "There's nothing here."

For people whose birthday lands on January 16th, wrap an empty box. That should elicit a nothing response appropriate for the celebration.

When asked, "What are your plans, today?" your response should definitely be, "Nothing." What else would your answer be on a day like today? Now that we think about it, "Nothing" works well as an answer when recognizing the day.

Q: What's for supper?

A: Nothing

Q: What are you reading?

A. Nothing. (Even though you're clearly reading something.)

Q. What's your homework assignment?

A. Nothing. (As you're working on your homework.)

Q. What are you drinking?

A. Nothing. (As you sip on the best non-fat latte ever.)

New Orleans shines brightest in moments of despair. We know there’s no way to get through hardship without coming together - that is a part of who we are. We are a city truly defined by community.

As we continue to hold the victims and their families of the New Year’s Day Bourbon Street tragedy in our hearts, we are proud to partner with the Louisiana Restaurant Association’s Fleur du Coeur: A Culinary Tribute.

From January 13-19, 2025, please join us and other French Quarter restaurants and bars in celebrating the vibrant culinary traditions of New Orleans while supporting the New Orleans New Year’s Day Tragedy Fund.

At GW Fins, all proceeds from the sales of one of our signature dishes, Lobster Dumplings, will be donated directly to the fund, which serves as a resource to provide assistance to the families of those whose lives were taken and those seriously injured or impacted by the tragedy.

BARNEY BLAST - It’s called a Barney Blast for how it looks on weather modeling. Frigid cold is coming straight from the North Pole down the Plains and to the Gulf Coast starting Monday. Be ready for freezing conditions next week that will likely bust pipes and create dangerous wind chills. More details as this event gets closer!

When was the last time it snowed in New Orleans? It's been more than 15 years.

By KASEY BUBNASH

It's been more than 15 years since New Orleans saw measurable snowfall, but the rarely seen form of winter precipitation could grace the city's streets and rooftops once again next week.

Many residents woke up Wednesday morning and opened their phones to behold an unusual sight: A little white snowflake in next week's weather forecast.

Snow is a rare occurrence on the Gulf Coast, where temperatures seldom drop below freezing and cold fronts are often paired with dry air. But New Orleans, against all odds, has endured a handful of snowstorms throughout its history — even some that amazingly landed on Christmas Day.

The last time snow fell in Orleans Parish was on Dec. 4, 2009, when less than an inch of snow was recorded, according to the National Weather Service of New Orleans.

It wasn't enough to make a big impact in New Orleans, but on the northshore,

Trace amounts, though not enough to be measured, also fell in January 2018.

New Orleans' last true snowstorm, however, occurred on Dec. 11, 2008, when between 1-2 inches fell across the metro area.

Up to 3 inches piled up on the northshore that day, and Opelousas, which saw the most snowfall in the state, recorded 6 inches, according to the National Weather Service. It was the first time in years that the city had witnessed snow, the Times-Picayune reported, after experiencing a series of mild winters the years before.

We’ll be stocking King Cakes all season. More varieties are arriving soon in Mandeville. Come see what we offer from the Northshore, New Orleans, and beyond.

City of New Orleans officials say Mardi Gras parades this year will remain on their usual routes, despite earlier talk of moving them all to the Uptown route.

According to our partners at NOLA.com, New Orleans Chief Administrative Officer Gilbert Montaño said moving all parades to St. Charles Ave. was considered in the wake of the New Year's Day terrorist mass-murder on Bourbon St., but ultimately, it was decided that doing so would not make a significant difference in safety.

Parades such as Endymion, which is the only krewe left on the traditional Mid City route; NOMTOC, which parades in Algiers; and Thoth and Zulu, which have unique starting points before reaching St. Charles, will remain on their traditional routes.

Mardi Gras 2025 has, for the first time, a level one Special Event Assessment Rating. That's a designation from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security that brings the highest level of federal cooperation. It is the same security assessment the Super Bowl has received ever since the terror attacks of September 11, 2001.

The first Super Bowl played after 9/11 was Super Bowl XXXVI, at the Superdome.

Shawarma's origins can be traced back to the Middle East, with its roots deeply embedded in the Levant region, comprising modern-day Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, and parts of Turkey. Its history dates back to the 18th and 19th centuries when it was a regional delicacy.

Regift Your Christmas Trees to the Wetlands: Participate in the Annual Christmas Tree Recycling Program!

NEW ORLEANS – The City of New Orleans today reminded residents of the annual Christmas Tree Recycling Program to restore our wetlands. For over 26 years, this program has contributed to the restoration of the Bayou Sauvage Urban National Wildlife Refuge, while also preventing them from being placed in landfills. Thanks to residents who participate in the program each year, recycled trees have restored an area of marsh equal to approximately 200 football fields. The trees also create an important habitat for birds, fish, crabs, crawfish and shrimp.

This year, the City added expanded dates and several new drop-off sites on the East Bank and West Bank to make it easier for residents to recycle their trees. Here’s when and how to participate:

City of New Orleans Extends Opportunities to Recycle Christmas Trees Through Friday, January 17

NEW ORLEANS – The City of New Orleans today announce the extension of Christmas tree collections. Residents are encouraged to call 3-1-1 to request a Christmas tree pickup through Friday, Jan. 17 if their tree was not collected this week. Requests can also be made by visiting https://nola311.org/.

After the 3-1-1 request is made, residents should immediately place their tree on the curb in a position that is easy for the contractor to retrieve it. Residents should also leave the trees in place until they are removed, as the contractor’s route may vary.

Trees cannot be flocked or have remnants of tinsel. Lighting and all ornamentation must be removed before recycling pick up. Residents should also try to remove plastic bases from their trees. However, wooden bases are acceptable.

The program is coordinated by the City of New Orleans Office of Resilience and Sustainability (ORS) and the Department of Sanitation, in partnership with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Louisiana Army National Guard (LANG).

The trees will be sorted, bundled and airlifted by helicopter to be dropped off in the spring in targeted sections of the Bayou Sauvage Urban National Wildlife Refuge. The project benefits the City of New Orleans and surrounding coastal environment while also providing valuable training hours for pilots and crewmembers of the 1st Assault Helicopter Battalion, 244th Aviation Regiment.

Someone had to win on Tuesday night in the Pete Maravich Assembly Center. LSU and Arkansas entered the game with identical records, 11-5 overall, but more importantly 0-and-3 in the SEC.

LSU didn’t shoot it well, just 40% from the field, but they were 26 of 28 from the free throw line, which helped them get their first SEC victory of 2025, a 78 to 74 win over the Razorbacks.

NATIONAL FIG NEWTON DAY

National Fig Newton Day on January 16th annually recognizes a tasty pastry enjoyed across the country.

A Nabisco's trademarked version of the fig roll, Newtons are a pastry filled with fig paste. Fig Newtons have an unusual and characteristic shape that has been adopted by many competitors, including generic fig bars.

Up until the 19th century, many physicians believed most illnesses were related to digestion problems. As a remedy, they recommended a daily intake of biscuits and fruit. Fig rolls served as an ideal solution to their advice, which remained a locally produced handmade product.

In 1891, Philadelphia baker and fig-lover Charles Roser invented and patented the machine, which inserted fig paste into a thick pastry dough. The Cambridgeport, MA-based Kennedy Biscuit Company then purchased Roser's recipe. They began mass production after purchasing the recipe. In 1891, they produced the first Fig Newtons baked at the F.A. Kennedy Steam Bakery. The company named the pastries after the town of Newton, Massachusetts.

After recently becoming associated, the Kennedy Biscuit Company and the New York Biscuit company merged to form Nabisco. The new company trademarked the fig rolls as Fig Newtons.

Words That Used to Mean Something Very Different

Language is an ever-evolving entity, reflecting the cultural and societal shifts that occur over time. As words pass through generations, their meanings can shift dramatically. A term that once held a specific significance might evolve into something entirely different, often leading to confusion or humorous interpretations in modern contexts. In this blog post, we will explore several words that used to mean something very different from what they represent today. This journey through the history of language not only showcases the fluidity of words but also invites us to appreciate the rich tapestry of human communication.

Awful

The word "awful" is commonly understood today as something dreadful or terrible. However, its origins tell a different story. In the 15th century, "awful" was derived from the Old English "awe," meaning "inspiring wonder" or "full of awe." It was a term used to describe something that was profoundly impressive or majestic, such as the grandeur of nature or the might of a deity. Over time, the meaning shifted, and by the 18th century, it began to take on its current negative connotation. This transformation highlights how perceptions of wonder can morph into feelings of dread.

Nice

Today, "nice" is often used to describe something pleasant or agreeable. However, its etymological roots trace back to the Latin word "nescius," meaning "ignorant." In the Middle Ages, "nice" was used to describe someone as foolish or silly. It wasn't until the 18th century that the word began to adopt a more positive meaning, evolving into the sense of being agreeable or pleasant. This remarkable shift shows how societal values can alter the interpretation of a word drastically.

Silly

The term "silly" is often employed to describe someone who is foolish or lacking in seriousness. Interestingly, its original meaning was quite the opposite. Derived from the Old English word "sælig," which meant "happy" or "blessed," "silly" was once a term of endearment. Over the centuries, however, the word began to be associated with foolishness and a lack of sense. This evolution reflects a broader cultural tendency to view certain forms of happiness or naivety as undesirable, ultimately altering the word's connotation.

Gay

In contemporary usage, "gay" is widely recognized as a term used to describe sexual orientation, specifically relating to homosexuality. However, in the 12th century, "gay" meant "joyful" or "carefree." It was often used to describe a state of happiness or a sense of light-heartedness. The transition of the word's meaning began in the 20th century as it became associated with the LGBTQ+ community. This change highlights how societal shifts in attitudes toward sexuality can influence language, creating new meanings while leaving behind the old ones.

Meat

The word "meat" today refers specifically to the flesh of animals consumed as food. However, in Old English, "mete" encompassed a broader definition, meaning any type of food or nourishment. This included not just animal flesh but also vegetables, grains, and other edibles. Over time, as the culinary world evolved and distinctions between different food categories became more pronounced, "meat" began to narrow its focus exclusively to animal products. This shift underscores how dietary practices and cultural perceptions of food can impact language.

Hussy

In modern language, the term "hussy" is commonly used to describe a woman who is considered promiscuous or shameless. However, the word's origins are far less derogatory. It originally came from the Middle English "husewif," meaning "housewife." Over time, the meaning shifted, and by the 16th century, it had taken on a more negative connotation, referring to a woman of questionable morals. This transformation illustrates how societal attitudes toward women and their roles can significantly alter the meanings of words associated with them.

Fathom

Today, "fathom" is often used to express understanding or comprehension, as in, "I can't fathom why he did that." However, its original meaning was quite literal, referring to a unit of measurement used to determine the depth of water, equal to six feet. The word derives from the Old English "fæðm," meaning "to embrace" or "enfold." Over time, the metaphorical use of the term to indicate understanding gained prominence, showcasing how physical measurements can evolve into abstract concepts.

Clue

The word "clue" has a modern association with hints or pieces of information that help solve a mystery or puzzle. However, its roots lie in the Old English word "clew," referring to a ball of thread. In Greek mythology, Theseus used a clew to navigate the labyrinth and find his way out after slaying the Minotaur. The transformation from a literal thread to a metaphorical hint or guide illustrates how storytelling and mythology can influence the evolution of language.

Bootstrap

Today, "bootstrap" is often used in a business context to refer to self-sufficiency or starting a venture with minimal resources. Its origins, however, are rooted in the phrase "to pull oneself up by one's bootstraps," which was first used in the 19th century to describe an impossible task. The term, originally meaning to undertake a self-starting process without external help, has morphed into a more positive connotation of self-reliance and entrepreneurship. This change highlights how language can evolve alongside cultural values and practices.

Words are not static; they are dynamic entities that evolve alongside the cultures and societies that use them. The examples we've explored in this post illustrate how meanings can shift dramatically over time, often reflecting broader societal changes, attitudes, and values. As we continue to navigate an ever-evolving linguistic landscape, it’s essential to appreciate the history behind the words we use and recognize that their meanings may not always align with our current understanding. Embracing this awareness can lead to richer communication and a deeper appreciation of the complexities of language.

Friday Night Wine School - Rhonerama Part II, the Villages and Crus of the Southern Rhone

Fri Jan 17, 2025 5:30 PM - 7:30 PM CST Swirl, 70119

Join us for our attendance-limited, signup-only Friday night tasting! Tastings are held on the back patio with a max of 12 people per time slot.

"Every 13 seconds, a bottle of Rhône Valley AOC wine is enjoyed somewhere in the world."

The Rhône wine region, one of the most ancient wine-growing areas, stretches along the Rhône River to the Mediterranean Sea in the southern part of France. Geologically speaking, it was created during the last ice age as the Rhône Glacier carved its way south from the Swiss Alps through what is now France. Today, the Rhône River meanders southward on this path for over 500 miles, nourishing the region and shaping its landscape and character.

The region is one of the most celebrated and popular wine regions in the world. From the Northern Rhône, where the rugged hills of Côte-Rôtie and Hermitage produce elegant and age-worthy Syrah wines, to the sun-drenched vineyards of the Southern Rhône, where blends of Grenache, Mourvèdre, and Syrah define powerful reds like those of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, the Rhône offers an incredible diversity of styles and flavors. Each subregion of the valley showcases its unique terroir, shaped by ancient soils, rolling hills, and a climate that ranges from cool, alpine influences in the north to the warm Mediterranean breeze in the south.

The Southern Rhône is famed for its bold, structured reds and complex blends that have made the valley a powerhouse of French winemaking. Whether you're tasting wines from Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Gigondas, or the lesser-known but equally intriguing Luberon or Ventoux, you’ll be treated to a true reflection of the land, where the mountains meet the Mediterranean, and each glass of wine tells a story of the people, places, and centuries-old practices that have shaped this exceptional region.

As with all wine regions in France, the Rhone has a hierarchical system of qualifying quality. From the ripe and welcoming Cotes du Rhone AOC to the more structured Cotes du Rhone Villages and finally, the famous Cru wines, exploring the region can be a complicated but delicious journey. In our "Rhonerama" series, we'll break down the AOC systems requirements as we taste very distinct wines from the area.

The Villages and Crus are the heart of the region such as the famous AOC's of Chateauneuf du Pape, Gigondas, Vacqueyras, Tavel, Lirac, Rasteau, Cairanne, Beaumes de Venise and Vinsobres. Join Nicole Todaro as we take a road trip around the area, tasting the similarities and differences of these captivating wines.

-All ticket sales are final.

-We will hold our tastings outside on the patio from 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM on Fridays weather permitting, if it rains we move inside to the back of the shop.

-Your $5 tasting fee is refunded when you purchase a bottle of wine from the tasting. Limit 1 refund per bottle per customer.

-Please arrive 5 minutes early for your time slot, as we may not be able to move you to another spot.

-No waiting in line for your taste of wine in a plastic cup and snippet of info. During your time slot, you will have the presenter's undivided attention as you learn about and taste the wines from Riedel glassware.

-When your tasting is over, you can browse and shop or enjoy a glass or bottle at our indoor and outdoor tables.

LSU Women's Basketball...

BATON ROUGE, La. – One point separated the teams going into the fourth quarter Monday night in the PMAC, but No. 5 LSU (19-0, 4-0 SEC) outlasted Vanderbilt (14-3, 1-3 SEC), 83-77, to remain undefeated headed into its bye.

Neither team created much separation in the game which featured seven ties and 13 lead changes. LSU’s final six point edge was the largest lead by either team Monday night.

“They all just care about winning, and we just made plays,” said Coach Kim Mulkey whose team is now 5-0 in games decided by 10 points or less. “We’re going to make them sometimes and sometimes we’re not. They’re not afraid of the moment.”

“I think it is just togetherness,” Flau’Jae Johnson explained about winning numerous tight games. “I feel like we really come together in those moments when the spotlight is big or we are in a tight game, we just know how to come together.”

The Tigers are off until Sunday when they will face Florida in Gainesville at noon CT on the SEC Network.

Our live music classes with local musicians and culture bearers, as well as our overall emphasis on music appreciation is what makes our lessons stand out among the rest!

Starts at The Contemporary Arts Center!

6-7pm Intro to Swing

For total beginners to swing dancing or dancing of any kind. Also for those looking to refresh their basics and learn some ragtime dances. We use these pre-swing era dances to teach beginners how to step on rhythm, step on rhythm while connected to another person, how to connect in order to lead or follow, you'll learn to syncopate your footwork, and then we'll slowly start to let go of one hand and create the beginnings of what will eventually be a bad-ass swing out.

7:30-8:30 Lindy Hop Vocab - Intermediate Level

This class is gonna give you some must know moves, some technique, some philosophy, and of course, we'll continue to clarify and polish up your swing outs.

No partner required to take either of these classes. Come alone or with friends!

Comedy House New Orleans

The most unique comedy show in New Orleans is The Open Mic From Hell, hosted by Chris Trew (as seen on MTV, Comedy Central, America's Got Talent)

CHNO ( Comedy house New Orleans)

609-610 Fulton St

New Orleans, LA 70130

Mon,January 13

8:00 pm - 10:00 pm

(Entry at 7:30 pm)

The Open Mic From Hell is the most unique night of comedy in New Orleans.

Everything about the show is chaotic and unpredictable in the most beautifully hilarious way.

The list of performers? A total mystery.

The jokes they’ll tell? Nobody knows, not even them.

How does it work? Comedians sign-up on the list an hour before showtime. At least 13 names get pulled out of the bucket.

When a name gets pulled they come on stage and make a choice - do they do an entirely new set based on words from the audience, or a special challenge set.

Past challenges have had comics doing their set outside on the street, with noise canceling headphones on, and with a designated heckler in the crowd. We are always adding new, improved, and ridiculous challenges to the show.

"A joyously mad evening of comic theater [...] The play ends and you ask yourself, 'Where do we go from here?' Perhaps that's just the

Timbuktu, USA offers a refreshingly absurd portrait of American systems of power. Originally written in the immediate aftermath of Donald Trump's first inauguration, the play tells the story of Kelly Kilkenny, a decorated career politican who formulates a devious plot to attain the ultimate seat of power – the American presidency. Will Kilkenny manage to claim what's rightfully hers, or will the men (and the monkey) in her life prevent her from claiming the highest seat in the land? More information, including cast and crew, is available at Intramural Theater's website.

Super Bowl LIX may happen more than three weeks before Fat Tuesday, but the host committee wants to make sure the city -- and the throngs of visitors in town for the NFL's championship game -- get the carnival experience.

The day before the game, February 8, there will be a Mardi Gras-style parade complete with elaborate floats, marching bands, and throws.

Our partners at NOLA.com report details of the parade are still being finalized, but float-builder Barry Kern says it will likely be a 20-float parade made up of signature floats from various krewes.

And because it is not an official carnival parade, corporate sponsors will also be a part of it.

Todd Graves, founder of Baton Rouge-based Raising Cane's Chicken Fingers, will serve as grand marshal.

Rather than follow one of the traditional Mardi Gras routes, the Super Bowl parade will line up on Elysian Fields in the Marigny, parade up Decatur Street along the French Quarter, then take Tchoupitoulas St. to Poydras, turn up to St. Charles Ave., then proceed along St. Charles to St. Joseph St. just before reaching Harmony Circle.

Super Bowl LIX pre-game show features all New Orleans and Louisiana musicians

The NFL announced on Thanksgiving that the Super Bowl LIX pre-game telecast will spotlight singers and musicians from New Orleans and Louisiana.

Jon Batiste, who grew up in Kenner and attended St. Augustine High School and the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts, will sing the national anthem in the Caesars Superdome ahead of kickoff on Feb. 9.

Troy "Trombone Shorty" Andrews, who grew up in Treme, will team up with contemporary Christian singer and Lafayette native Lauren Daigle to perform "America the Beautiful." They have previously made guest appearances with one another onstage and on recordings.

And contemporary R&B singer Ledisi, who was born and raised in New Orleans before moving to California, will perform "Lift Every Voice and Sing."

“We’re honored to work with this year’s pregame lineup to celebrate the rich musical legacy of New Orleans and the entire state,” said Seth Dudowsky, head of music at the NFL, in a news release. "The Super Bowl is a rare moment to unite fans around the world, and this year’s performers will bring the energy, soul and vibrant sounds of the region to a global stage, as we kickoff Super Bowl LIX with a celebration to remember.”

Just two days after Super Bowl LIX, Jefferson Parish will celebrate its 200th birthday on Feb. 11. Bicentennial festivities kicked off at the State of Jefferson address Tuesday with the unveiling of the official poster, depicting a pelican before the Mississippi River in vivid pink and blue hues. It is illustrated by Louisiana artist Becky Fos, known for designing the 2023 state "I Voted" sticker, modeled after the Louisiana state flag.

A limited supply of signed and numbered posters can be purchased for $150, with proceeds going toward the Jefferson Community Foundation.

Courtesy of Jefferson Parish

The parish will celebrate the bicentennial on Feb. 11 with a Light the Night event, followed by a community-wide king cake party at Lakeside Mall on Feb. 15.

The following month, a bicentennial-themed Senior Expo will take place at the Alario Center on March 20, and a "Park to Park" 10K run will happen March 22 at Lafreniere Park.

Festivities for the parish's 200th birthday will come to a close June 14 with the Bicentennial Ball at Lakeside Mall, hosted by the Jefferson Community Foundation. Lee Sheng said she wanted parish events to involve the entire community and asked residents and local business owners to get involved.

"I want our bicentennial to feel like everybody's a part of it," Lee Sheng said in her address.
