DEMONIC INFLUENCES: OBSESSION
Today we look at the demonic influence of obsession. It is the most serious of the influences (recession, obsession, oppression, depression) outside of possession., In fact, renowned Bible teacher Derek Prince said it is the last step before full possession where the free will and human spirit are surrendered to a demon. With obsession, the demon exerts a controlling influence over the mind and emotion, and to a certain extent even the will (soul: mind, emotion, will), but does not control the spirit. A believer can be obsessed in his soul but not his spirit because Holy Spirit is present with one’s human spirit, preventing demonic spirits from having full control (possession).
What exactly is obsession? It is:
To fill the mind (soul) of someone of (something): to keep the attention (on something) to an unreasonable or unhealthy extent; haunt
For an evil spirit to beset or dominate a person
Influenced by a feeling, idea, or impulse that a person cannot escape
A compelling and fixed idea or feeling (usually irrational) over which a person has very little conscious control
Yes, these descriptions are all right from the dictionary. Obsession is considered a mental health disorder, an obsessional neurosis. It can also be associated with obsessive-compulsive disorder.
There are many different “things” a person may obsess over. It could be fear based. It could be an extreme fixation on another person. Whatever may be the focus, it is almost always irrational, or beyond any normal reasoning. It constantly occupies the person’s mind and influences their behavior. It usually becomes problematic in relationship to friends or other people around them.
Psychiatrists will counsel them, give them medication, but are powerless to “cure” them. It is a demonic stronghold and must be dealt with on a spiritual level.
Yes, it is a “stronghold” of high degree, but not yet a “possession.” If not dealt with spiritually, it has the long-term potential of full-blown possession in an unbeliever. Only the Holy Spirit and the Name and Blood of Jesus will protect the believer from
Therein lies the ultimate key to victory: The Word, the Name, and the Blood of Jesus.
Our weapons (two-edged” swords”) to destroy the work of the demons are found in Ephesians 6:17 (the Word of God) and Psalm 149:6 (high praises to God).
