HaMakom Continuing Education Presents

Anti-Zionism and Antisemitism: The Experiences of Students from the University of New Mexico

Presenter: Sara Koplik, Ph.D.

Tuesday, November 11 at 7PM on Zoom

This presentation will examine the many facets of antisemitism and anti-Zionism that Jewish students have experienced on UNM's campus particularly since October 7th. While the accounts of Harvard, Columbia, and UCLA are better known, New Mexican students also face similar issues with far fewer resources or numbers. Yet, they learn to advocate for themselves, gaining strength from their Jewish peers and community. This lecture will discuss the challenges that our students continue to encounter and the ways they build resiliency.

Sara Koplik, Ph.D. is the director of the Aaron David Bram Hillel House at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque. She has served in this capacity since 2010. Born in Albuquerque and raised within its Jewish community, Sara received a master's degree in Central Asian studies and a doctorate in Middle Eastern history from the School of Oriental and African Studies at the University of London. She is the author of A Political and Economic History of the Jews of Afghanistan which was nominated for a Jewish Book Award in 2015.

Sara founded the Sephardic heritage program at the Jewish Federation of New Mexico, and from 2016-2021, helped thousands of individuals across the world certify their ancestral Sephardic roots. She edited the New Mexico Jewish Link for a decade. She served as president of the North Campus Neighborhood Association for 12 years, leading the effort to preserve the largest green space in the urban core of Albuquerque. In August 2025, she received a New Mexico Humanitarian Award for her work with Jewish students.

Suggested donation $10-$18

We Remember Them

Yarzeits This Week

Louis Weintraub

father of Barbara Weintraub

Irving Wiseman

father of Atma Wiseman

Donate to honor the memory of departed loved ones and support HaMakom.

Thank you Atma Wiseman for the donation in memory of her parents, Irving and Marian Wiseman.

The observance of Yahrzeit is a sacred mark of reverence for the beloved departed; remembering them imparts a dimension of sanctity to our lives as we join together to recite Kaddish at services. Our noble tradition also invites us to kindle a memorial candle at home, and to make a memorial offering in honor of the person who is being remembered.

Promotional Sale of Cemetery Plots

This year, the owners of Memorial Gardens Cemetery are again offering a fall promotion on the sale of graves in the Jewish section. The terms offered are similar to those of last year: 15% off the price of a plot purchased preneed; 0% financing for 3 years with 20% down. For example, the total 2025 preneed price of a single plot was $7,405.43 (perpetual care and taxes included), while the total 2025 sale price for this same plot, preneed, is now $6,335.19 (perpetual care and taxes included). Double depth plots, available only in select rows, are now reduced from $9,136.43 (perpetual care and taxes included) to $7,806.54, preneed, (perpetual care and taxes included). Prices go up annually; please consider purchasing graves before the end of 2025, when the promotion ends on December 31, 2025.
