DWELLING IN THE SECRET PLACE

Psalm 91:1 has been quoted this year probably more than any other psalm. It reads: “He that dwelleth in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the almighty.”

If we break it down, first of all it starts with “He.” The he can be either male or female. That is the qualification. Then we get to the word dwelleth. It comes from the Hebrew word yashab which means so much more than just dwell. It means to remain, to settle, to marry, to abide, to continue, to endure, to establish, habitation, keep house. Think of it. We are to “marry” the one that lives in the Secret Place. Who is that one? It is the Lord, Jesus Christ. We become his soon coming bride when He comes back for His Church – His bride. Then we are to “settle in” and keep house. Think of it my friends. This is so profound. We don’t just live in a house alone anymore. We dwell with “the Most High.” He lives with us and we live with Him.

Then we are to abide there. That word abides is told in Jesus’ parable about abiding in the vine. We get our life from the vine. We are the branches off the vine, but Jesus is the vine.

Then it goes on to say that we abide under the shadow of the Almighty. The shadow comes from the Hebrew word “tsel” which means a shady place, but it also means defense. God is our defense. He is our High Tower. We are protected by His shadow and are safe when we abide with Him in the Secret place. And the word Almighty comes from the Hebrew word “shadday” which means all powerful.

How awesome to know that when we dwell in the Secret place with the Most High that we are protected by God Almighty. I can’t imagine any place that I would rather be. We are protected, loved, cared for, and provided for in that place of habitation.

How do we get to that secret place? First, we receive Jesus as our Savior, then we spend time reading the Bible and getting to know His will. Then we pray and think about him and listen for Him to speak to us by the Holy Spirit or through His word. As we do this, we are dwelling with Him, and will always be safe!

GREAT GAIN

I Timothy 6:6 says, “…godliness with contentment is great gain.”

It is the nature of man to seek “gain,” always wanting more. This is particularly true once the basic needs have been met. Yes, basic needs come first, then comes the desire for “more.” More money, more power, more love, more of whatever it is they seek.

The key to a good life is not “more stuff” or anything else. The real key is our relationship to God. Hebrews 11:6 says, “…he who comes to god must believe that He is (exists), and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.”

God is our ultimate provider. Even when our work brings us a good living, it is He who provides both the ability and opportunity to work. When we are unable to work, He will provide for the most essential needs.

Our greatest need is for inner peace. Jesus is the giver of that peace. He said in John 14:27 (NKJV), “Peace I leave with you, my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you.”

The world views peace as an absence of conflict. That is not true peace. The peace that Christ gives is a calm assurance that all is well in our soul, our inner man. It comes with confidence that God has our best interest in his heart, mind, and will. That confidence, anchored in faith and trust, is the godliness that will preserve us (soul and spirit) into eternity. That brings us contentment. That brings the great gain of eternal glory in the afterlife. Jesus is our pathway; there is no other.

EXHORTATION

If you’ll remember David didn't really look as if he had much going for him. Think about it...He was an underdog, a nobody from nowhere, a Hebrew hillbilly, rejected by his father, put down and made fun of by his brothers. Even still, in spite of where David had been or what he’d endured; None of it kept him from going on to become one of the most famous kings and military strategist of all times. Yes, his life’s occupation went from shepherd to king; And his address changed from the pasture to the palace. True, he was a murderer and an adulterer...But he did not allow his past to dictate his future. In the end David was remembered as a man after God's own heart. So look up from wherever life may have left you; And know that if David overcame all of his obstacles in life...You can too. The thing that made David go on to become such a great man of God was simply because he remained patient in difficult times, he had a teachable spirit...And he kept a repentant heart.
