Halloween's origins can be traced back to the ancient Celtic festival known as Samhain, which was held on November 1 in contemporary calendars. It was believed that on that day, the souls of the dead returned to their homes, so people dressed in costumes and lit bonfires to ward off spirits.
HALLOWEEN
On October 31, Halloween brings out the ghouls and goblins, creatures, and strange folk. They come creeping about the neighborhood seeking favors over trickery.
People of all ages look forward to Halloween traditions. While dressing up and baking, we carve up glowing pumpkins. Children breathe life into storybook characters while practicing their trick or treat. In twos and threes, they traipse through the neighborhood, collecting their bounty in pillow sacks. A ghost, a pirate, a robot or Dorothy, and Toto. No matter their age, they come to the door. They knock or ring. Here and there, a screech or a boo!
The crisp air and autumn colors set the mood. Seasonings fill our senses with a taste of autumn. So we set forth on an adventure and finish with a warm apple cider around a flickering fire.

City Buildings to Undergo Exterior and Window Cleaning
NEW ORLEANS – The City of New Orleans announces that starting Friday, Nov. 1, exterior and window cleaning of various City buildings will begin. These buildings will include City Hall, Civil Courts, and the City Hall Annex Building.
Exterior pressure washing will be performed by Rolling Suds New Orleans and Alpha Drones, while window cleaning will be handled by ACME Window Cleaners and Geaux Stars. The innovative pressure washing will be completed via “soft wash” with drone technology to preserve the delicacy of the buildings. Once the pressure washing drones are completed, the window cleaning will begin to address the remaining restoration.
This work is expected to enhance appearance, preserve deterioration, and restore healthy working spaces once completed. During this time, early morning and evening weekend work will be required, and crews will strategically adjust one portion of the building at a time. The workflow approach chosen will ensure building functionality continues as restoration progresses.
Questions about this work can be directed to the Office of Strategic Engagement & Special Projects by dialing 504.658.7623 or emailing ose@nola.gov.
To better serve residents with more timely communication, the Office of Strategic Engagement is in the process of building a distribution list to provide important construction updates through text messaging.

Have we found all the major Maya cities? Not even close, new research suggests
Lidar technology has allowed scientists to survey large swaths of land from the comfort of a computer lab, uncovering anomalies in the landscape that often prove to be pyramids, family houses and other examples of Maya infrastructure. (Photo by Marcello Canuto)
Using laser-guided imaging to peer through dense jungle forests, Tulane University researchers have uncovered vast unexplored Maya settlements in Mexico and a better understanding of the ancient civilization's extent and complexity.
The new research, published in the journal Antiquity, was led by Tulane University anthropology doctoral student Luke Auld-Thomas and his advisor, Professor Marcello A. Canuto.
The team used lidar, a laser-based detection system, to survey 50 square miles of land in Campeche, Mexico, an area largely overlooked by archaeologists. Their findings included evidence of more than 6,500 pre-Hispanic structures, including a previously unknown large city complete with iconic stone pyramids.
“Our analysis not only revealed a picture of a region that was dense with settlements, but it also revealed a lot of variability,” said Auld-Thomas, a doctoral student in Tulane’s Anthropology Department and instructor at Northern Arizona University. “We didn’t just find rural areas and smaller settlements. We also found a large city with pyramids right next to the area’s only highway, near a town where people have been actively farming among the ruins for years. The government never knew about it; the scientific community never knew about it. That really puts an exclamation point behind the statement that, no, we have not found everything, and yes, there’s a lot more to be discovered.”
The Middle American Research Institute (MARI) at Tulane University has been pioneering the use of lidar technology in archaeological research. Over the past decade, MARI has built a state-of-the-art Geographic Information Systems (GIS) lab, to analyze remote sensing data, such as lidar. The lab is managed by Francisco Estrada-Belli, a research professor in Tulane's Department of Anthropology.
Lidar technology uses laser pulses to measure distances and create three-dimensional models of specific areas. It has allowed scientists to scan large swaths of land from the comfort of a computer lab, uncovering anomalies in the landscape that often prove to be pyramids, family houses and other examples of Maya infrastructure.
“Thanks to generous funding from the Hitz Foundation, MARI has been at the forefront of the use of lidar technology in archaeological research over the past decade,” said Canuto, director of MARI. “Now our efforts are expanding from data analysis to data collection and acquisition. The work conducted on these data from Campeche represent how MARI’s ‘lidar footprint’ is expanding.”
This research may also help resolve ongoing debates about the true extent of Maya settlements.
"Because lidar allows us to map large areas very quickly, and at really high precision and levels of detail, that made us react, 'Oh wow, there are so many buildings out there we didn't know about, the population must have been huge,’” Auld-Thomas said. “The counterargument was that lidar surveys were still too tethered to known, large sites, such as Tikal, and therefore had developed a distorted image of the Maya lowlands. What if the rest of the Maya area was far more rural and what we had mapped so far was the exception instead of the rule?"
The study highlights the transformative power of lidar technology in unveiling the secrets of ancient civilizations. It also provides compelling evidence of a more complex and varied Maya landscape than previously thought.
"Lidar is teaching us that, like many other ancient civilizations, the lowland Maya built a diverse tapestry of towns and communities over their tropical landscape,” Canuto said. “While some areas are replete with vast agricultural patches and dense populations, others have only small communities. Nonetheless, we can now see how much the ancient Maya changed their environment to support a long-lived complex society."

Get out your lederhosen, spruce up your dirndls and prepare to eat and drink German style — It’s time for Oktoberfest at Middendorf’s! Oktoberfest is an annual tradition that runs for 6 weeks, every Wednesday and Thursday, at Middendorf’s Manchac and Middendorf’s Slidell. It starts on Oktober 2, 2024 and ends on November 7, 2024. That’s right… Oktoberfest is so much fun that it spills over into November!
There is a different Oktoberfest meal available each week (while supplies last):
APPETIZERS
- Kartoffelpuffer mit Apfel Sosse 8.75 (German Potato Pancake with Apple Sauce)
- Maultaschen in Brühe mit Gerösteten Zwiebeln 10.95 (German Ravioli in Broth)
- Nürnbergerle 10.25 (3 small Bratwust with Sauerkraut and Pretzel)
- Riesenbrezel 10.00 (Giant Pretzel with mustard)
- Vesper Teller 14.50 (Assorted meats & cheeses served with pickle, radish, onion, mustard and pretzel)
- Weisswurst 10.25 (White Sausage served with pretzel and sweet mustard)
- Wurstsalat 9.25 (Chopped German Salami, Cold Cuts, Cheeses, Pickles and Onion tossed in Vinaigrette)
- It’s the Chef’s Choice which appetizers will be available each week. Stay tuned!
ENTREES & DESSERTS (A different meal is available each week of Oktoberfest.)
- 10/30/24 & 10/31/24 — Schweinshaxe, Bayerischkraut und Brezel 21.50 (Pork Hind Shank/Ham Hock, Smothered Cabbage and Pretzel); Apfel Strudel mit Vanille Eis 7.25 (Apple Strudel with Vanilla Ice Cream)
11/6/24 & 11/7/24 — Wiener Schnitzel und Geröstet Semmelknödel mit Pilzrahmsoße, Gemischtem Salat und Brezel 19.50 (Breaded Thin Pork Loin and Dumpling with Mushroom Cream Sauce, Salad and Pretzel); Schwarzwälderkirschtorte 7.25 (Black Forest Cake)
The German expertise comes from Middendorf’s Owner and European Master Chef Horst Pfeifer who is a native of Germany. He grew-up in the hamlet of Bächlingen where his family still lives today. The village was established in 950 AD and boasts a grand population of around 150 people.
“It’s an honor to share my German heritage with everyone through the recipes that I grew up with,” said Middendorf’s Owner Horst Pfeifer. “I think Louis Middendorf would have been so happy to see Oktoberfest here at the restaurant. Louis was also from Germany, and he founded Middendorf’s back in 1934 with his wife, Josie. It’s funny because Middendorf’s is so widely known for seafood that a lot of people don’t realize that Middendorf is actually a German name.”
- During Oktoberfest, there is a different German meal available each week for lunch and dinner, 10:30am-9:00pm (while supplies last). Guests who eat an Oktoberfest meal for all six weeks will receive an Oktoberfest Prize! Punch cards must be punched each week and turned in on the final week.
- The full regular menu is also available for guests. So, you can have a German meal, and your friend can have the Thin Fried Catfish. Everyone’s happy!
- Of course, we have a great selection of German beer and liqueur to go with your German meal (see below).
- Authentic German music is also in store for Oktoberfest. We’ll have live accordion music every night of Oktoberfest, 4:30pm-8:30pm. In Manchac, David C. Symons will join us. In Slidell, Will Robichaux will play for the 1st week, and then for the next 5 weeks, it will be Greg Speck (aka Captain Squeeze).
- Join in the fun by dressing up in your favorite lederhosen, dirndls and German accessories just like our front of house staff. We’ll have a great variety of hats and souvenirs in our gift shop.

Six projects could make Louisiana a vital link in the electric vehicle supply chain
BY RICH COLLINS
Employees work at the Syrah Technologies graphite-processing facility in Vidalia, Louisiana.
Workers at the Syrah Technologies plant in Vidalia, Louisiana hit a major milestone earlier this year, becoming the first facility outside of China to produce battery-grade graphite at commercial scale for electric vehicles.
Owned by an Australian mining company, Syrah brings in unprocessed material from its mine in Mozambique to the Port of New Orleans, where it’s loaded on trucks for delivery to its 13-acre facility on the banks of the Mississippi River.
“It comes to us in a super sack. We grind it, mill it, purify it, dry it, coat it, carbonize it, screen it and then put it in another super sack for shipment to the battery plants,” said Todd Stevens, the general manager of the plant and its 90 employees.
So far, Syrah has only been producing sample runs. But it has an agreement with Tesla to sell the automaker 80% of its output and hopes to be running full speed next year. If EV demand holds up — a big question given recent market trends and possible changes to federal programs depending on who next occupies the White House — the company plans to invest roughly $500 million on an expansion that will triple its output.
Six Louisiana EV projects
Syrah’s facility represents a first step into the EV supply chain for Louisiana, where companies — spurred by federal incentives aimed at creating a domestic EV industry — are grabbing a small slice of the investments taking place across the U.S.
Since 2022, five other companies have announced plans to build or expand EV materials manufacturing in the state. Four are chemical companies planning to make battery ingredients in the industrial corridor between Baton Rouge and New Orleans, while a Canadian mining company has signed a multi-decade lease at a former Air Force base near Alexandria where it plans to refine “rare earth” materials that can be used to create magnets used in EV motors.
All told, the projects promise $2.4 billion in investment and more than 600 jobs.
It's a good start, according to business and civic leaders, as well as economic development officials, who see it as a foothold in a growing industry. It has also raised concerns from local advocates concerned about the environmental impacts of this particular slice of the green economy. And there are also bigger questions about why this part of the supply chain, and not others, has flocked to Louisiana.
Power boost for EV industry
The Louisiana projects are happening alongside investments nationwide, all reflecting the Biden Administration’s goal to boost domestic manufacturing of electric vehicles, EV batteries and the materials and chemicals needed to make them.
The 2022 Inflation Reduction Act spurred $100 billion in investments in EV and battery projects nationwide, according to a March report from the Environmental Defense Fund.
Much of the investment is concentrated in the nation’s new “battery belt,” which includes Georgia, Indiana, Michigan, North Carolina, Ohio, Tennessee and Kansas.
For instance, in De Soto, Kansas, a $4 billion Panasonic EV battery manufacturing plant that will employ 4,000 workers as soon as next year represents the biggest economic development project in the state’s history.
Louisiana hasn't landed anything quite so large, and that's likely because it didn't have much of a competitive position for those types of investments. It isn't a major car manufacturer, for instance, like some Southern states.
But Louisiana has still found a niche, according to Josh Fleig, chief innovation officer at the state's economic development agency.
"Five years ago, Louisiana had nearly zero advantage in batteries and now have quickly built a manufacturing cluster critical to the U.S. supply chain," he said. "If we're going to make batteries in the U.S., that process now starts in Louisiana. I'd love to get to a place where it ends here, too."
Greg Upton, executive director of the LSU Center for Energy Studies, said Louisiana attracts chemical and refining projects because it has access to inexpensive electricity, natural gas and other petroleum products, brine from salt domes, pipelines and an extensive rail network, among other assets.
It also "has a history in refining, chemical manufacturing and big industrial facilities," he said.
To be sure, some residents and environmental advocates are lining up against more chemical company activity in the state.
Nancy Pearson, president of the River Ridge Community Association, is concerned about the project proposed across the Mississippi River from her neighborhood. In February, Japanese chemical conglomerate UBE announced plans to invest $500 million at Cornerstone Energy Park in Waggaman. The company hopes to be the first in the U.S. to make two types of battery solvent.
“We already live in Cancer Alley, and they’re already producing serious toxins," said Pearson, whose neighborhood group recently voted unanimously to oppose the expansion. "It’s going to be a lot more when this chemical plant starts producing.”
Tom Yura, chief operating officer at UBE C1 Chemicals America, said the company is committed to being a good neighbor.
“The project has received broad support from the business community, the parish and our local Waggaman area stakeholders,” he said.
Supporters of the Cornerstone plant and others have focused on how the plants will carve out a piece of the overall pie for Louisiana. And John Flake, a professor of chemical engineering at LSU, said EV battery projects take up a different place in the local chemical industry.
"Even though we’re not making the actual batteries, these products are still much higher value than the commodity chemicals that characterize most of our industry," he said. "They're in the category of chemicals for pharmaceuticals and semiconductors."
Flake said he's hopeful that having multiple battery materials plants could lead to bigger investments further along the supply chain.
"I’m optimistic that if we have a solvent manufacturer and manganese manufacturer and anode manufacturer in Baton Rouge, then you’re not far away from having the battery manufacturer here as well,” he said.
EV market uncertainty
One big question, however, is the growth of the U.S. electric vehicle market.
There’s been some worries over EVs in the U.S., where forecasts for the growth of the market this year have been tempered and some carmakers have delayed the rollout of new models.
There are also questions about what might happen to the electric vehicle market, and therefore the supply chain, depending on who wins the U.S. presidential election. Vice President Kamala Harris has said she hopes to accelerate the growth of new energy, while former President Donald Trump has hinted he would gut the Inflation Reduction Act.
Despite the uncertainly, Stevens and his colleagues in Vidalia are optimistic, likening this moment to a similar transition more than a century ago.
“It’s like when we went from horse and buggy to the Model T Ford," he said. "The cars were very expensive, there were no gas stations, no interstate or roads. You can imagine that transition. It’s the same thing here. The growth will be there, so it makes sense for Louisiana to get out in front.”
LSU’s Flake agrees, and said people have to have realistic expectations.
“The rate of change is a little slower than what some people had hoped for, but you can’t put a supply chain in place overnight,” he said. “I think that maybe, a decade from now, every person will have one EV car and one gas car.”

Just two days after Super Bowl LIX, Jefferson Parish will celebrate its 200th birthday on Feb. 11. Bicentennial festivities kicked off at the State of Jefferson address Tuesday with the unveiling of the official poster, depicting a pelican before the Mississippi River in vivid pink and blue hues. It is illustrated by Louisiana artist Becky Fos, known for designing the 2023 state "I Voted" sticker, modeled after the Louisiana state flag.
A limited supply of signed and numbered posters can be purchased for $150, with proceeds going toward the Jefferson Community Foundation.
Courtesy of Jefferson Parish
The parish will celebrate the bicentennial on Feb. 11 with a Light the Night event, followed by a community-wide king cake party at Lakeside Mall on Feb. 15.
The following month, a bicentennial-themed Senior Expo will take place at the Alario Center on March 20, and a "Park to Park" 10K run will happen March 22 at Lafreniere Park.
Festivities for the parish's 200th birthday will come to a close June 14 with the Bicentennial Ball at Lakeside Mall, hosted by the Jefferson Community Foundation. Lee Sheng said she wanted parish events to involve the entire community and asked residents and local business owners to get involved.
"I want our bicentennial to feel like everybody's a part of it," Lee Sheng said in her address.

Zombie Paintball Returns to NOLA Motorsports Park in Avondale
07:00 October 04, 2024
By: Charles Andre Blanchard
Celebrate the Spooky Season
Beginning October 10 and extending until November 2, attendees to Zombie Paintball can celebrate the Halloween season with a monstrous bang (and potentially satisfy their need for speed).
Festivities
This popular seasonal activity once again returns to the premier racing facility in Avondale, this time with an enhanced festival area and zombie-hunting scenes, courtesy of their new partnership with Mardi Gras Productions. The 20-minute experience includes a bus ride to designated target stations, where riders will test their accuracy and try to defeat all the zombie enemies. They are also given a chance to reload their guns and go back through the stations before finishing.
Guests can also explore nearby festivities to celebrate the Halloween season. Food trucks will be present, along with stations for pumpkin carving and face painting. Local craft vendors and more themed-attractions make this a great family-friendly stop this Halloween. For the adults, drink specials will also be offered on several days.
NOTE: The only targets are the zombies. Attendees will not be harmed or shot at. However, children under 12 years of age must be accompanied by an adult.
Pricing & Packages
General admission begins at $22 per person and includes a rental paintball gun and 150 rounds of ammo.
For $45, Guests can purchase the Zombie Paintball + Karting package, which includes the aforementioned rental gun and ammo but also an added go-kart session on the NOLA Motorsports track.
Have a large group? NOLA Motorsports also offers a $650 party package. With this, up to 28 people can skip the line and each receive a commemorative bandana before boarding a private bus and being given the accompanying rental guns and ammo.
For tickets, visit the NOLA Motorsports Park's box office or their website.
Hours & Dates of Operation
The attraction will be open from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. on the following days:

New Orleans music venue Hi-Ho Lounge set to close Oct. 31
BY JOHN STANTON | Gambit editor

PHOTO BY SOPHIA GERMER / THE TIMES-PICAYUNE
The owners of the Hi-Ho Lounge announced Oct. 24 they will close at the end of the month, though the longtime music venue and staple of the St. Claude Ave. strip is expected to reopen under new ownership.
In an Instagram post announcing the closure Thursday, the venue’s owners Alice Blackwell and Michael Oilar said “after seven of the most fun-filled years of our lives, it's time for us to hand the Hi-Ho off to the stewards of the next chapter. The club has been sold to a local group who have exciting plans for the venue.” What those plans entail is unclear at this point.
Hi-Ho has long been a mainstay in the neighborhood, well before the strip of St. Claude became the trendy nightlife area it is today. But its eclectic lineup of music ranging from stoner comedy shows to blue grass nights to DJ Soul Sister’s parties played a key role in the revitalization of the area. It's also been one of the dwindling number of small to mid-size venues to host rock, punk, underground hip-hop and other alternative genres of music.
The current ownership's run of the bar ends October 31, and it's unclear when it will reopen.

NATIONAL CARAMEL APPLE DAY
National Caramel Apple Day on October 31st celebrates a time-honored fall treat. Many of us remember eating caramel apples or making them with family. Whether it was at a fair, carnival, or Halloween party, it was a special treat. Sometimes we even made them at home. No matter where we enjoyed them, the memory is a good one.
Caramel apples go by many names - taffy apples or even candy apples. They're made by skewering apples on a stick and then dipping them in hot caramel. We make them extra delicious by rolling them in nuts, chocolate, or other candies.
Sheet caramel allows for the high production of candy apples. The sheets of caramel are wrapped around the apples and then heated to melt the caramel evenly. The best caramel apples are made with tart crisp apples, such as Granny Smith or Fuji apples. Since apples come into season during the fall, Halloween is the ideal time of year to enjoy caramel apples.
The caramel-apple flavor is also a fall favorite. It finds its way into beverages, cakes, and other desserts. Add caramel to just about any apple recipe for a bit of caramel apple flavor. It also complements savory dishes, such as pork.

Paul Siefken - Vernon Poche and The Ghosts of New Orleans
Meet author Paul Siefken when he visits Octavia Books to sign his new middle grade historical fantasy novel titled Vernon Poche and The Ghosts of New Orleans.
Vernon Poche returns home to New Orleans with his father, an electrician, just two weeks after Hurricane Katrina left the city underwater and abandoned. But his dad says they’re not staying. He’s taken a new job in Atlanta, and they’re moving away permanently. Upset, Vernon rides his bike through the empty streets to visit his mom’s grave. It’s the first stop on a haunted journey that introduces Vernon to a mysterious little dog named Tonti, a girl named Alisha who’s separated from her mom, and a gaggle of ghosts—musicians and maskers, soldiers and singers, nuns and Native Americans, pirates, painters, and presidents. The ghosts lead them deep into the city and its troubled past and, hopefully, toward a way back home for good.
Paul Siefken grew up in New Orleans, down the street from Bayou Saint John, where he and his siblings spent time riding bikes along the banks. As a kid, he watched Saints games in the Superdome, served as reader at Saint Louis Cathedral, and watched Mardi Gras parades from the stands at Gallier Hall downtown. Paul was living in Washington, D.C. when Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans. His parents, siblings and extended family were among the thousands of people who evacuated, forced to find housing for months after the devastating flood. Now living in Pittsburgh, Paul and his family visit New Orleans to enjoy family time and take in the food, music, and history of the great city. Paul taught high school English in North Carolina and Georgia before starting a career in children’s television, first at Cartoon Network in Atlanta, then at PBS KIDS in Washington, D.C., and now as president of Fred Rogers Productions in Pittsburgh. He’s written chapter books for Cartoon Network series The Powerpuff Girls and Samurai Jack and has had several short plays produced in New York. Vernon Poche and The Ghosts of New Orleans is Paul’s first novel.

Long-lost Banksy mural rediscovered and restored in New Orleans. Here's how to see it.
The street art superstar created Katrina recovery murals in 2008.
BY DOUG MACCASH
It’s an artistic resurrection. A graffiti mural by international art superstar Banksy, which was defaced and demolished, has been rediscovered and restored.
The rescued painting will go on display Friday in a Central Business District hotel.
The artwork, which depicts a child playing on a rope swing made from a life preserver, was one of the 17 Hurricane Katrina-inspired murals that the secretive British street artist produced during a visit to New Orleans in 2008.
The poetic piece that captured the poignancy of the recovery era appeared on the exterior wall of a flooded neighborhood saloon that stood near North Claiborne Avenue in the Lower Ninth Ward.
The child using a life preserver as a tire swing near the corner of Claiborne Avenue and Reynes Street in the Lower 9th Ward was one of Banksy's simplest and most poignant images. It was soon defaced with red paint. (Staff Photo, NOLA.com | The Times-Picayune).
Ruining the work of a master
Despite Banksy’s renown, not everyone appreciated his designs, which were sometimes painted without permission of property owners. For reasons unknown, a man arrived not long after the mural was finished and obliterated it with scarlet spray paint.
Sometime after that, the concrete-block former saloon was demolished. That would have seemed to be the end of the painting, which might have been worth hundreds of thousands, even millions, if it was intact.
Happily, someone apparently recognized the potential value of even a ruined Banksy. Hotelier and art lover Sean Cummings received a text from someone using the pseudonym Sam, who said he had the 30 cement blocks upon which the Banksy lay hidden, coated in paint.
Banksy's 'Boy on a Life Preserver Swing' seemed to be completely lost

Sam, a dump truck driver, doubtless sought out Cummings because the well-known businessman had already salvaged one seemingly lost Banksy painting – the image of National Guardsmen looting a house – and had it laboriously restored. That mural went on display at Cumming’s International House Hotel in 2013.
After Cummings and Elise Grenier – the painting conservator who’d restored Banksy’s National Guardsmen painting – were satisfied that the ruined “Boy on a Life Preserver Swing” was authentic, they purchased the fragments for an undisclosed amount.
“It was completely painted over," Cunnings said. "There was no part of the mural that was evident.”
Parts of Banksy's 'Boy on a Life Preserver Swing' can be seen as Elise Grenier works to expose the original painting

A conservation breakthrough
The restoration would have been daunting, maybe even impossible, if it weren’t for a coincidence. Two years after Cummings and Grenier bought the pile of bricks, an Italian chemist invented a gel paint remover that was precise enough to strip off a layer of spray paint without damaging the artwork below.
Prior to 2023, it would have been impossible, Cummings said.
Even with the new paint stripper, the process was lengthy and painstaking. Speaking of Grenier’s work, Cummings said, “She probably did the most remarkable job ever done by a conservationist.”
Now, finally, the concrete blocks have been re-stacked into a portion of the original wall and mounted on a rolling platform for exhibition. The painting will be viewable in the Hotel lobby at 221 Camp St., beginning with an unveiling at 7 p.m. on Friday.
Other New Orleans Banksys
Of Banksy’s 2008 New Orleans murals, most seem to have been destroyed. A handful survive, though none are still visible in their original locations.

All Saints’ Day and All Souls Day
As we approach Halloween, we are also closing in on All Saints' Day (November 1st) and All Soul's Day (November 2nd) -- also known as the Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed and the Day of the Dead. The Catholic Church teaches that the purification of the souls in Purgatory can be hastened by the actions of the faithful on earth.
Thus began the custom in New Orleans of gathering at the tombs of their deceased family members on All Saints' Day to clean and refurbish the exterior façade of the tombs, shown here in an 1885 engraving. Far from solemn, it was quite the community event with friends and neighbors sharing stories of their loved ones, and perhaps a simple meal as they worked.
Sadly, with many families being scattered throughout the country, many tombs have fallen into disrepair as surviving family in many cases is unaware of the existence of a family plot. known as the Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed and the Day of the Dead. Join us for with acclaimed indie musician and songwriter Orenda Fink presenting and signing her new memoir, THE WITCHES DAUGHTER: My Mother, Her Magic, and the Madness that Bound Us, when she appears at Octavia Books in conversation with Poppy Tooker of "Louisiana Eats."
Orenda Fink’s lyrical and moving memoir about growing up with a mother who battled mental illness and addiction is a “master text on surviving trauma as a child and adult” (Phoebe Bridgers).
Each night, Orenda Fink’s darkly charismatic mother perches on a kitchen stool and insists that she and Orenda are magic. Orenda’s mother claims to be a witch who uses her magic to protect the family from the outside world, but Orenda’s childhood is marked by instability and uncertainty. Her family moves from town to town, chasing a fresh start whenever the money runs out.
Orenda escapes to pursue a music career in Birmingham, Alabama, and then Athens, Georgia, forming the bands Little Red Rocket and Azure Ray. The magic she finds in her music, and in her sense of self, feels precious and rare, while the magic her mother wields feels increasingly volatile. Orenda orbits the family home, always drawn back by her mother’s dark powers and her own need to discover whether that claim of magic—or any magic—is real.
With the guidance of a Jungian psychotherapist, Orenda is stunned to learn that her mother fits many of the criteria associated with borderline personality disorder, including a subtype identified by famed thought leader Christine Ann Lawson known as “The Witch”—an aggressive, dominating figure who operates by fear-driven control, sometimes claiming to wield magic. Told in spellbinding prose, this memoir of music, self-discovery, and compassion is for anyone who has had to conjure a safe place to call home.
“Equal parts cutting and compassionate, this tale of hard-won peace will resonate with readers wrestling with their own complicated families” (Publishers Weekly).
Orenda Fink is a musician, songwriter, performer, writer, and certified Jungian depth coach specializing in shadow work and dream interpretation. Her work has been profiled in NPR, Pitchfork, and more. She has been writing, recording, and touring since 1997. Orenda got her start in Birmingham, Alabama, with the pop rock group Little Red Rocket. In 2000, she formed the lauded ethereal folk duo Azure Ray with longtime friend Maria Taylor in Athens, Georgia. She now resides in California’s Mojave Desert with her husband, Todd Fink of The Faint, and their dog, Grimm. The Witch’s Daughter is her first book.

Corsica, a French island in the Mediterranean, has a fascinating wine culture that's shaped by its unique blend of French and Italian influences, rugged terrain, and Mediterranean climate. Despite being part of France, Italy’s influence on Corsica is profound, shaping the island’s culture, language, architecture, cuisine, and especially its wine traditions. Corsica was under Genoese rule for nearly five centuries (from the late 13th century until 1768), and its proximity to Tuscany and Sardinia also contributed to strong Italian connections.
Most of the Corsican grapes have ties to Italy as well. Nielluccio is Corsica’s most important red grape and is genetically very similar to Sangiovese, Italy’s iconic grape, particularly from Tuscany. Vermentino, known in Corsica as Malvoisie de Corse, is widely planted in both Corsica and Sardinia, as well as in regions of mainland Italy like Liguria and Tuscany. It is thought to have originated from Italy, possibly Liguria, and spread across the Mediterranean. Sciaccarello, another key red grape of Corsica, is believed to be related to Mammolo, a lesser-known grape from Tuscany. Mammolo is often used in blends, such as in Chianti, but in Corsica, Sciaccarello has developed a distinct identity.
Even after France acquired Corsica in 1768, Italian influence remained deeply embedded in the island’s identity. Many Corsicans still feel a closer cultural affinity to Italy than to mainland France, especially given the shared history, language, and food traditions. This dual identity makes Corsica unique within France, with its Italian roots constantly blending with French culture to create something distinct. It also contributes to the island’s distinctive wine style—one that’s both rustic and refined, combining the structure of Italian reds with the elegance of French whites.
Corsican wines are still relatively under the radar, which makes them an exciting discovery for wine drinkers looking for something new and unique. Dave Sobiesk will accompany us on this tour as Artisan Fine Wines has a great selection from the island for us to choose from. I hope you'll join us! Use this link for tickets,Corsica

8:00 pm - 10:00 pm
(Entry at 7:30 pm)
The Open Mic From Hell is the most unique night of comedy in New Orleans.
Everything about the show is chaotic and unpredictable in the most beautifully hilarious way.
The list of performers? A total mystery.
The jokes they’ll tell? Nobody knows, not even them.
How does it work? Comedians sign-up on the list an hour before showtime. At least 13 names get pulled out of the bucket.
When a name gets pulled they come on stage and make a choice - do they do an entirely new set based on words from the audience, or a special challenge set.
Past challenges have had comics doing their set outside on the street, with noise canceling headphones on, and with a designated heckler in the crowd. We are always adding new, improved, and ridiculous challenges to the show.

LSU football's matchup against Alabama on Nov. 9 will kickoff at 6:30 p.m. on ABC, the Southeastern Conference
This will be the second consecutive game LSU will play on ABC in primetime.
LSU faced Alabama at the same time the past two seasons. Last seasons game was on CBS.
The Crimson Tide took down LSU 42-28 in Tuscaloosa a year ago after the Tigers upset Alabama in Baton Rouge in 2022, 32-31 in overtime.
Alabama leads the all-time series against LSU with a 56-27-5 record. It has won 13 of the past 15 head-to-head matchups.
The Tigers lost their second game of the year this past weekend to Texas A&M, falling 38-23 in College Station.
LSU held a 17-7 lead at halftime but three interceptions from redshirt junior quarterback Garrett Nussmeier and the Aggies switching quarterbacks — replacing Conner Weigman with Marcel Reed — jolted a 31-6 run for Texas A&M in the second

Musician, composer, actor and writer Hoagy was one of the most successful entertainers of the 1930s and 40s. He recorded hundreds of songs, and several are most popular in the American songbook: Stardust, Heart and Soul, Georgia and The Nearness of You. Throw in In the Cool, Cool, Cool of the Evening, Lazy Bones, Skylark, Ole Buttermilk Sky, Up the Lazy River and get set for a historically and musically entertaining evening.
Join Heidi, John, Paul, Rich, Alden, Dave, and Phil as we close out our Fall Songwriters Series with three nights of Hoagy’s music. Add the comedy of Chris Champagne under the stars of Monkey Hill and … “that old Rockin’ Chair won’t get ya.”

Billy Nungesser Lt. Governor of Louisiana
For the fourth consecutive year, Louisiana will showcase its vibrant culture in the 2025 Tournament of Rose Parade in Pasadena, California! This year’s float, featuring a Louisiana alligator adorned with beads, a Cajun dance hall, and pots of boiled seafood, perfectly captures the essence of a “Louisiana Saturday Night.” Plus, enjoy mid-parade entertainment by rising country star Timothy Wayne!
We can’t wait to share Louisiana’s celebratory spirit and unique culture with the world once again.

Super Bowl LIX may happen more than three weeks before Fat Tuesday, but the host committee wants to make sure the city -- and the throngs of visitors in town for the NFL's championship game -- get the carnival experience.
The day before the game, February 8, there will be a Mardi Gras-style parade complete with elaborate floats, marching bands, and throws.
Our partners at NOLA.com report details of the parade are still being finalized, but float-builder Barry Kern says it will likely be a 20-float parade made up of signature floats from various krewes.
And because it is not an official carnival parade, corporate sponsors will also be a part of it.
Todd Graves, founder of Baton Rouge-based Raising Cane's Chicken Fingers, will serve as grand marshal.
Rather than follow one of the traditional Mardi Gras routes, the Super Bowl parade will line up on Elysian Fields in the Marigny, parade up Decatur Street along the French Quarter, then take Tchoupitoulas St. to Poydras, turn up to St. Charles Ave., then proceed along St. Charles to St. Joseph St. just before reaching Harmony Circle.
