TALK LIKE A PIRATE DAY

All you bilge rats, Aaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrgh! Get ready to celebration Talk Like a Pirate Day September 19.

As you are out and about today, don't be surprised if people are saying, "Ahoy Matey," "Avast," "Aye, Aye Capt'n," "Land ho!" "Hornpipe," and many other pirate-like phrases, because it's International Talk Like a Pirate Day.

While ordering your coffee in the drive-thru, ask if they have change for gold bullion. Try testing your pirate language out at the library when asking for the location of Moby Dick. The pirate language always fairs well in rough seas. Settle a debate with "I'm right or I'll walk the plank!"

When the boss gives you a new project, "Aye, aye, Capt'n," is the correct response. However, beware calling the boss any frothy names. The goal of the day is not to lose your job.

To polish your persona, practice a swagger, limp or squint. Long days at sea give pirates unique qualities.

It’s Fettuccine Frenzy at Middendorf’s Manchac & Middendorf’s Slidell! Every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday in September, handmade paper-thin fettuccine is on the menu.

This mouth-watering dish is served with your choice of classic Alfredo or Marinara Sauce and topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese with optional add-ons of shrimp, crabmeat and chicken.

  • Fettuccine with Alfredo Sauce topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano Cheese
  • Fettuccine with Marinara Sauce topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano Cheese
  • Optional add-ons:
  • Shrimp
  • Crabmeat
  • Chicken
  • Side of Fettuccine topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano Cheese

Fun Facts:

  • Our handmade, paper-thin fettuccine was a guest favorite at Bella Luna in the French Quarter. Bella Luna was a fine dining restaurant owned and operated by Horst and Karen Pfeifer. It closed due to Hurricane Katrina and never reopened. The memory of Bella Luna lives on through Fettuccine Frenzy at Middendorf’s. Same Pasta. Same Taste. None of the Fancy.
  • Middendorf’s Owner and European Master Chef Horst Pfeifer makes the fettuccine from scratch which consists solely of Semolina flour and eggs. It’s a very time consuming process to make the fettuccine so paper-thin, but it’s definitely worth it.
  • Fettuccine is available all day (lunch and dinner).
  • Our full menu is also available.
  • Uncooked fettuccine is also available for purchase to make a quick meal at home.

We hope you can join us for Fettuccine Frenzy — Every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday in September!

Giraffes, Zebras and Peafowl, Oh My!

Doesn’t matter whether you’re young or simply young at heart; a fall trip to Global Wildlife’s 900-acre “African savanna in Louisiana” should be high on your list of must-do experiences. From September through December, the wildlife preserve near Folsom, LA, buzzes with excitement during the breeding and birthing season.

As unique as human fingerprints, no two Grant’s zebras have the same striping pattern. A group of zebras is called a dazzle, and with good reason. When they huddle together it’s difficult for predators to pick out an individual zebra to prey upon. Prior to giving birth, mother zebras will separate themselves from the herd. After the foal is born, mom and baby will study each other for hours, memorizing each other’s striping pattern and imprinting vocalizations and scents. This defense mechanism helps mom and foal to reunite quickly if they are separated during a chase. The Grant’s zebra herd has grown by two this autumn, and watching the new foals follow their mom, prancing around on spindly little legs, is sure to bring smiles of delight.

At Global Wildlife’s Visitor Center, a trio of new peachicks religiously follow their mother, Pearl the Indian blue peahen, who is teaching them how to forage for insects and other foods. Pearl faithfully sat on a nest she built on the ground in the Kangaroo Walkabout, and this is her first clutch of chicks to hatch. Pearl communicates with her babies using clucks and calls, encouraging them not to wander far from her protective gaze. Sharp-eyed guests might catch a glimpse of them when they visit!

What is the modern equivalent of the word "erstwhile"?

Hidden

Former

Current

Future

"Former" serves as the contemporary equivalent of the term "erstwhile," both conveying the idea of something that was once in a particular state or role but is no longer so. While "erstwhile" often carries a literary or formal tone, "former" is more commonly used in everyday language, making it accessible to a broader audience. This transition reflects the evolution of language, where simpler terms often replace more archaic ones. Whether referring to a former president, a bygone era, or past relationships, "former" effectively communicates the sense of something that has changed or is no longer in existence.

‘Beams & Brews’ showcases restored Magazine St. boutique hotel

CityBusiness staff reports

Grab a beer on Thursday and witness a historic property return to commerce in New Orleans.

The Preservation Resource Center’s Beams & Brews series continues Thursday, Sept. 19, at 5:30 p.m. with a tour of 1212 Magazine St., an 1860’s Greek Revival building in the Lower Garden District that has been restored, renovated, and transformed into the Heirloom Bed & Breakfast.

The boutique hotel, formerly the Green House Inn, is scheduled to open in October.

Beams & Brews, originally known as Renovator’s Happy Hour, started in the early 2000’s as a fun event that happens about six to eight times a year, and offers attendees an opportunity to view more than 50-year-old, historic renovation residential and commercial projects at various stages of construction, hear from the project’s managers, and enjoy drinks.

“The PRC has been proud to produce this event for more than 20 years to show how restoration and adaptive reuse projects can be possible and be beneficial to our city and communities. These properties are being saved, restored, and put back into commerce, and those are achievements to celebrate,” said Michelle Shoriak, PRC Director of Conservation and Education.

Tickets are $10 for non-PRC members; admission is free for PRC members. Tickets can be purchased online at the PRC Beams & Brews website. The 2024 “Beams & Brews” series presenting sponsor is JLV Construction, along with additional contributions by True Title, and Urban South Brewery.

JLV Construction is also the lead general contractor on 1212 Magazine St., the subject of Thursday’s Beams & Brews. The local custom residential and commercial builder joined forces with Stay Heirloom, CICADA, Fricker Historic Preservation Services, and Webre Consulting, to tag team the renovations of the property.

The 10,000-square-foot building, on 19,000 square feet of land with a backyard pool and hot tub, was purchased in late 2022 by Top of Form

Bottom of Form

Daniel Glaser and Frank Glaser who own Heirloom and Stayloom – a business that specializes in renovating and renting luxury homes in historic neighborhoods. The Glaser’s acquired the property from preservationist and owner Jesse LeBlanc II in two separate transactions totaling $2.7 million, according to a NOLA.com article.

One of the most notable aspects of the renovation is the full restoration of the building’s iconic front façade. The property, which once featured enclosed porches, now displays its original double gallery Greek Revival design. The grand arch between the double parlors and the crown molding were found beneath the dropped ceiling and restored. A new roof was also installed. Tax credits were utilized to preserve and restore the historical integrity of the building while updating it for modern use.

“Before the purchase, the property did not have its best foot forward and the shape it was in almost completely covered up its original character,” said Donna Fricker, owner of Fricker Historic Preservation Services, LLC, a historic tax credit consulting firm for owners, contractors, and architects across the state. “The entire renovation team, overseen by Heirloom, really went above and beyond what they were required to do to restore 1212 Magazine’s historical elements and original charm and update it for current commercial use. The exterior is extremely appealing, the streetscape has improved, and this building can now return to benefit our economy.”

Key challenges included selective demolition to retain intricate historical elements, such as plaster work and millwork, while ensuring structural stability. Despite these challenges, JLV Construction completed the project ahead of the planned nine-month timeline.

“The work that we put into bringing a historic property back into commerce is an amazing feeling, and we are proud of the team effort at 1212 Magazine,” said JLV Construction CEO Kirk Williamson. “We are excited to once again be a part of the Beams & Brews series, and we look forward to showing off the finished product.”

JLV was founded in New Orleans in 2010 by current director of operations and former CEO Jose Villeda. The company began as a two-person operation committed to rebuilding New Orleans in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina and has grown into a DBE-certified residential and commercial contracting firm with 23 employees.

Historic renovations are not new to JLV Construction. In February, Beams & Brews visited a JLV Construction restoration at 1816-1818 Fourth St. – an 1880’s Central City double shotgun that was transformed into two independent rental units. JLV also led the renovation of 3301 Chippewa St. (renovation of a 19th century corner bakery into an architecture studio); 3233 Loyola Ave. (renovation of a 19th century store into a shotgun house complex); and 3707 S. Saratoga St. (renovation of a 20th century two-story house); and 1121 Kerlerec St. (renovation of a 20th century Creole cottage); to name a few.

“The Beams & Brews series is right up our alley and our business, and makes sense for us to be a contributor and presenting sponsor,” said Williamson. “We enjoy renovating and restoring properties and sharing our story with hundreds of people interested in construction, architecture, and preservation. They are our kinds of people.”

Shoriak said Beams & Brews events average about 150 people in attendance. The last Beams & Brews event was in May when attendees toured the Common House at 420 Julia St., the site of the former Children’s Museum. In March, Beams & Brews also visited the old Holy Cross school in the Ninth Ward that has been transformed into an apartment complex. That event featured the highest Beams & Brews attendance with close to 300 people.

“We really enjoy this event. It’s what the PRC is all about, and it’s a lot of fun,” said Shoriak. “Beams & Brews also brings together like-minded people in the industry, so that contractors new to the field can learn from experienced contractors completing these restorations.”

What does "zeitgeber" mean?

zeitgeber

/ˈzaɪtˌɡeɪbər/

Definition: A stimulus, such as light or temperature, that helps to regulate the biological clock of an organism by synchronizing its internal rhythms with the external environment.

Origin: From the German words "Zeit" meaning "time" and "geber" meaning "giver".

Example: Natural light serves as a primary zeitgeber, influencing the sleep-wake cycles of many living organisms.

An environmental cue, or zeitgeber, is a critical factor in regulating biological rhythms in living organisms. These cues, which include natural light, temperature changes, and seasonal variations, help synchronize internal clocks with the external environment. For example, exposure to sunlight in the morning can signal the brain to produce hormones that promote wakefulness, while darkness prompts the release of melatonin to encourage sleep. By responding to these environmental signals, organisms can maintain optimal functioning, ensuring their activities align with the natural cycles of day and night, which is essential for overall health and well-being.

PENNY DREADFULS: The REMARKABLE ROOMING-HOUSE of MADAME LE MONDE
by Tennessee Williams

It’s Tennessee Williams as you’ve never seen him as these unhinged vignettes probe the macabre corners of the human psyche. Wacky, weird, and wild desire splatters in all directions on the stage as three of Williams’ most outrageous stories come to life in a one-of-a-kind choose-your-own-adventure night of curiosities and creeps. Not for kids and not for the faint of heart!
The night of theatre will also include Williams'
Why Do You Smoke So Much, Lily & The Case Of The Crushed Petunias.

NATIONAL BUTTERSCOTCH PUDDING DAY | SEPTEMBER 19

On September 19th, National Butterscotch Pudding Day offers a sweet taste of a wholesome and creamy dessert.

Brown sugar and butter star in the recipes for butterscotch pudding. However, corn syrup, vanilla, and salt are also sometimes used. Butterscotch adds amazing flavor to items such as sauces, candies, and frostings.

An 1848 newspaper offers the scoop on this yummy pudding. According to "Housewife's Corner" and Masluk Cream Co., the real recipe for "making Doncaster butterscotch is one pound of butter, one pound of sugar and a quarter of a pound of treacle, boiled together."

Enjoy butterscotch pudding on its own or use it in other recipes. The flavor goes well with graham cracker crusts for pies or layered in a trifle, too. Simply layer with chunks of pound cake and whipped cream. Add nuts or a caramel drizzle for texture and visual appeal. Spike your pudding with bourbon or rum. Pudding shots are delicious little cocktails.

Playmakers Theater been producing terrific shows from Covington’s Sans Souci Forest since 1955. This Saturday we raise the curtain on our 70th season with the uproarious comedy ‘Til Beth Do Us Part, by Jones Hope Wooten, the same team that wrote 2023’s sellout hit, The Savannah Sipping Society. Directed by Derek Thrush, the madcap comedy revolves around an ambitious, conniving assistant who attempts to take over her harried boss’s business and her husband.

‘Til Beth Do Us Part is a side-splitting comic romp about careens around the strained marriage of Gibby and Suzannah, a couple who have allowed their 27-year marriage grow stale. When new assistant Beth steps in the fireworks begin. Whether you’re married, single, rethinking your divorce or currently being controlled by someone up to no good, you’re sure to enjoy this family friendly, laugh-out-loud comedy.

The cast features Joanna Parr, Shawn Patterson, Stephanie Sayles, Jen Patterson, Laura Hayes, Daniel Jenkins, and Nada Elkassouf. Assistant director is Jen Patterson.

Comedy House New Orleans

The most unique comedy show in New Orleans is The Open Mic From Hell, hosted by Chris Trew (as seen on MTV, Comedy Central, America's Got Talent)

CHNO ( Comedy house New Orleans)

609-610 Fulton St

New Orleans, LA 70130

Mon, August 19

8:00 pm - 10:00 pm

(Entry at 7:30 pm)

The Open Mic From Hell is the most unique night of comedy in New Orleans.

Everything about the show is chaotic and unpredictable in the most beautifully hilarious way.

The list of performers? A total mystery.

The jokes they’ll tell? Nobody knows, not even them.

How does it work? Comedians sign-up on the list an hour before showtime. At least 13 names get pulled out of the bucket.

When a name gets pulled they come on stage and make a choice - do they do an entirely new set based on words from the audience, or a special challenge set.

Past challenges have had comics doing their set outside on the street, with noise canceling headphones on, and with a designated heckler in the crowd. We are always adding new, improved, and ridiculous challenges to the show.

Starts at The Contemporary Arts Center!

6-7pm Intro to Swing

For total beginners to swing dancing or dancing of any kind. Also for those looking to refresh their basics and learn some ragtime dances. We use these pre-swing era dances to teach beginners how to step on rhythm, step on rhythm while connected to another person, how to connect in order to lead or follow, you'll learn to syncopate your footwork, and then we'll slowly start to let go of one hand and create the beginnings of what will eventually be a bad-ass swing out.

7:30-8:30 Lindy Hop Vocab - Intermediate Level

This class is gonna give you some must know moves, some technique, some philosophy, and of course, we'll continue to clarify and polish up your swing outs.

No partner required to take either of these classes. Come alone or with friends!

Future dates include:

October 4:            Jason Neville Funky Soul Band

October 18:           Helen Gillet and Rebelle Musique

For the fourth consecutive year, Louisiana will showcase its vibrant culture in the 2025 Tournament of Rose Parade in Pasadena, California! This year’s float, featuring a Louisiana alligator adorned with beads, a Cajun dance hall, and pots of boiled seafood, perfectly captures the essence of a “Louisiana Saturday Night.” Plus, enjoy mid-parade entertainment by rising country star Timothy Wayne!

We can’t wait to share Louisiana’s celebratory spirit and unique culture with the world once again.
