NATIONAL PANCAKE DAY
National Pancake Day on September 26 sets up a tall stack of syrupy goodness to celebrate! Set the table. Mix up the batter. Heat up the griddle. Because the butter is ready to melt and the flapjacks are delicious!
Also known as Johnnycakes, griddle cakes or hotcakes, this batter-made breakfast item dates back more than 30,000 years. In fact, it may be the oldest breakfast food in history.
Johnnycakes became a traditional part of Fat Tuesday (Shrove Tuesday) celebrations when revelers would feast before fasting. They still do! The thin cakes can be rolled and filled with fruit and other fillings. Usually, though, they're stacked and drizzled with flavored syrup.
Add fruit, nuts or whipped topping, too. While served mostly as a breakfast item, pancakes along with bacon, ham, hashbrowns and other morning offerings also make a delicious supper. Breakfast for dinner is a nice change of pace in many homes.

Helene storm threats in Florida, Georgia
Storm surge is a major threat with Helene, and some areas along the Big Bend area of Florida could see up to 15 ft of storm surge, inundating houses, cars and businesses.
Residents in the Deep South, especially Florida and Georgia, should continue to keep a close eye on this system, as life-threatening storm surge, hurricane-force winds, and spin-up tornadoes are possible starting on Wednesday.
That said, Hurricane Warnings are now in effect for the Yucatan Peninsula, the Big Bend and the Panhandle of Florida, reaching all the way into South Georgia. Topical Storm Warnings are in effect for the entire Florida Peninsula.

|
Meteorologist Payton Malone WWLTV
Nearly all of Florida is under either Tropical Storm Warnings or Hurricane Warnings. Helene will have a giant wind field. Landfall Thursday evening in Big Bend area as major hurricane.

It’s Fettuccine Frenzy at Middendorf’s Manchac & Middendorf’s Slidell! Every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday in September, handmade paper-thin fettuccine is on the menu.
This mouth-watering dish is served with your choice of classic Alfredo or Marinara Sauce and topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese with optional add-ons of shrimp, crabmeat and chicken.
- Fettuccine with Alfredo Sauce topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano Cheese
- Fettuccine with Marinara Sauce topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano Cheese
- Optional add-ons:
- Shrimp
- Crabmeat
- Chicken
- Side of Fettuccine topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano Cheese
Fun Facts:
- Our handmade, paper-thin fettuccine was a guest favorite at Bella Luna in the French Quarter. Bella Luna was a fine dining restaurant owned and operated by Horst and Karen Pfeifer. It closed due to Hurricane Katrina and never reopened. The memory of Bella Luna lives on through Fettuccine Frenzy at Middendorf’s. Same Pasta. Same Taste. None of the Fancy.
- Middendorf’s Owner and European Master Chef Horst Pfeifer makes the fettuccine from scratch which consists solely of Semolina flour and eggs. It’s a very time consuming process to make the fettuccine so paper-thin, but it’s definitely worth it.
- Fettuccine is available all day (lunch and dinner).
- Our full menu is also available.
- Uncooked fettuccine is also available for purchase to make a quick meal at home.
We hope you can join us for Fettuccine Frenzy — Every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday in September!

The modern equivalent of the word "hie" is "hurry." Both terms convey a sense of urgency and promptness, urging someone to move quickly or act swiftly. "Hie," an archaic term often found in literature and poetry, suggests a brisk pace or haste, typically used in the context of urging someone to go or do something without delay. In contemporary language, "hurry" serves the same purpose, reflecting our fast-paced society where time is often of the essence. Whether in casual conversation or written communication, "hurry" effectively captures the zest and immediacy originally encapsulated by "hie." | | | |

Loyola University to Host Music Tech Startups Panel with Innovate.LOYNO: Melody Makers
by: Cameron Eaton
Loyola University’s Center for Entrepreneurship and Community Development, the College of Business, and the Music Industry Studies program are collaborating to present “Innovate.LOYNO – Melody Makers : Inside Music Tech Startups”, a panel discussion that will spotlight five innovative startups at the intersection of music and technology. These startups are all part of New Orleans’ METRONOME music business incubator, which supports local entrepreneurs pushing the boundaries of the music industry.
The event will take place on Thursday, September 26, at 112 Miller Hall, starting at 12:30 p.m.. Attendees will also be treated to free food during the event.
The panel will feature five startup founders:
- Mike Mauer, founder of Sparrow, will discuss his event marketing platform. Sparrow is designed to help event marketers streamline their operations and automate processes, having already supported over 10,000 events and generated more than $50 million in ticket sales.
- Alvin Harris, founder of Montralize, will showcase his app that accelerates artists’ journeys to monetization. Montralize simplifies the process of registering with professional agencies that manage royalty collection and provides tools for artists to engage directly with their fan base.
- Dr. Lana Joseph, founder of Jrumz, will talk about her company’s line of high-end, hearing health-conscious audio products for musicians and audiophiles. Jrumz is focused on delivering superior sound quality while prioritizing hearing safety.
- Tenley Gorman, co-founder of Tipzy, will present her mobile application that allows bars and venues to manage song requests, organize playlists, and gain data insights to improve the entertainment experience for their customers.
- James Jeffrey, founder of NOLA Now, will introduce his platform that connects New Orleans community members and tourists with authentic local events produced by New Orleans-based artists and businesses.
The panel will be moderated by Sean Mulligan, a Loyola alum who earned both a bachelor’s (’22) and MBA (’23) from the university.

PENNY DREADFULS: The REMARKABLE ROOMING-HOUSE of MADAME LE MONDE
by Tennessee Williams
It’s Tennessee Williams as you’ve never seen him as these unhinged vignettes probe the macabre corners of the human psyche. Wacky, weird, and wild desire splatters in all directions on the stage as three of Williams’ most outrageous stories come to life in a one-of-a-kind choose-your-own-adventure night of curiosities and creeps. Not for kids and not for the faint of heart!

NATIONAL DUMPLING DAY
National Dumpling Day on September 26 serves up a delicious treat to celebrate. With the popularity of dumplings growing all the time, the day offers a great way to celebrate! Whether enjoyed as an appetizer or the main course, each morsel satisfies.
Dumplings offer so much variety and flavor. They create a beautiful accompaniment to any meal, too. The endless possibilities of shape and taste make dumplings a favorite dish around the world.
Dumplings consist of small pieces of dough. Generally, but not always, the dough is wrapped around a filling. Both flavor and cooking methods factor into the wide variety of dumplings available, too. The dough may be composed of flour, potatoes, or bread. The fillings come in many forms - meat, fish, vegetables, or sweets. Dumplings can be cooked in many different ways, too. Some of the methods include boiling, steaming, simmering, and even frying. While dumplings are often eaten on their own, they are a delicious addition to soups and stews, too.

From Facebook terms to emotions: 10 words invented by Shakespeare
Published on September 26, 2024
Credit: Taha
It’s not always possible to attribute the origin of a precise word to a particular person. However, it is believed that William Shakespeare contributed more than 1,700 terms and expressions to the English language, many of which we still use today. The way Shakespeare invented, reused, and modified words is a living testament to his creativity and innovation. In this article, we have handpicked 10 words and phrases that you probably didn’t know were coined by the genius English poet and playwright. And the next time you use them, remember that you are following in the footsteps of a true linguistic legend!
1Lonely
Credit: William Shakespeare, CC0, via Wikimedia Commons
Loneliness is a sentiment we can all relate to. Who hasn't felt lonely at some point? Feeling sad about being apart from others is universal. But the interesting thing is that this word, which we use frequently in the English language, was first introduced in a play by William Shakespeare.
Written between 1605 and 1608, Coriolanus is a tragedy set in the earliest days of the Roman Republic. In the first scene of Act 4, General Coriolanus, speaks to his mother Volumnia, who tries to convince him not to attack Rome, and says: "Believe 't not lightly-though I go alone, / Like to a lonely dragon that his fen."
2Good Riddance
Credit: planet_fox
Thanks to William Shakespeare, we have a polite and decent idiom to express we are happy and relieved to see someone leave without resorting to insults and rudeness. What a treat! Although riddance is practically an obsolete term in modern English, the expression "good riddance" has stood the test of time.
Shakespeare first used it in The Merchant of Venice when Portia says to the Prince of Morocco: "A gentle riddance! Draw the curtains, go, / Let all of his complexion choose me so." In this case, the phrase didn’t have the ironic connotation that it would acquire later and that we still use today. That aspect would come with Patroclus' comment in Troilus and Cressida replying to Thersites' insolence when he finally leaves: "A good riddance."
3Gossip
Credit: DangrafArt
The word gossip has a long and intricate history. It is believed to derive from the combination of the Old English word sibb, meaning "relative", and the word god. The term godsibb was used to refer to a person spiritually related to another, that is, a godparent. A few centuries later the word evolved into its current form, gossip, and its meaning was extended to anyone who liked to talk about other people's private lives.
However, the verb form we use today, to gossip, is entirely due to Romeo and Juliet's creator. It was Shakespeare who first used the term as a verb in three of his comedies: The Comedy of Errors, All's Well That Ends Well, and A Midsummer Night's Dream. Well, no wonder—a good writer is, at heart, a great gossip.
4Brave New World
Credit: William Shakespeare, CC0, via Wikimedia Commons
You may be familiar with this line from Aldous Huxley's famous book published in 1932. But the truth is that Huxley borrowed the title for his dystopian novel from Shakespeare. The English playwright used the phrase ironically for the first time in his play The Tempest. The naïve Miranda, confined since childhood to an island with no contact with men other than her father, says upon seeing some sailors: "O wonder! / How many goodly creatures are there here! / How beauteous mankind is! O brave new world, / That has such people in 't."
Today, we use the phrase in the same cynical and ironic way Shakespeare conceived it more than 400 years ago. When something is about to change in history or society but we are not quite confident about the outcome, "brave new world" comes to mind, and it is impossible to resist using it. At least now we know its origin!

Romeo and Juliet is a symbol of romantic love and is a story that has been adapted thousands of times in literature, film, television, and music. The words used by Shakespeare to describe the landscapes of Verona and the characters’ physical attributes are unforgettable and have remained in the memory of readers for centuries. Even when we are not aware that many of those words were invented or put on paper for the first time under the pen of the genius playwright!
"Thou wilt quarrel with a man for cracking / nuts, having no other reason but because thou / hast hazel eyes. What eye but such an eye would spy / out such a quarrel?" says Mercutio. This is the earliest record of the word hazel in reference to a color, in this case, to describe Romeo’s eyes. Fun fact: in the Elizabethan period, it was considered a reddish-brown color, rather than the greenish-brown we think of today.
6Night Owl
Credit: Jez Timms
Do you consider yourself a nocturnal person? Someone who prefers to be active at night rather than during the day? If so, you are probably a night owl! But did you know that Shakespeare was the first to use the expression figuratively to describe people keen on nightlife?
In classical literature, the owl was an animal with negative connotations and was typically associated with bad omens. In Shakespeare's plays, they appear frequently, usually to announce that something bad is about to happen. However, in the narrative poem "The Rape of Lucrece," the night owl refers directly to a person: "The dove sleeps fast that this night-owl will catch: / Thus treason works ere traitors be espied." We’ve all felt a bit like a night owl at one time or another, but fortunately, nowadays the expression doesn't carry that negative connotation.
7Bandit
Credit: Matt Riches
Shakespeare's fascination with Italy is well known. Renaissance literature was profoundly influenced by the ideas, styles, and themes that emerged in Italy during this period. In the case of Shakespeare, the Italian influence is evident in the settings, themes, characters, and language of his plays.
In the same way that the author recovered terms and expressions from Old English, he also adapted words from other languages that were later incorporated into the popular lexicon. This is the case of the word bandit, which derives from the Italian bandito and literally means "one who is banished," referring to an outlaw who lives by stealing and other misdeeds. The first written record of bandit can be found in the play Timon of Athens.
8Green-Eyed Monster
Credit: Alexander Garcia
Jealousy is a common human emotion that can eat away at a person. Literature has dealt with this topic in many ways, and Shakespeare is one of the authors who has done it most brilliantly. In fact, he coined a term to describe people who suffer from such deep jealousy that they can cause harm to others and themselves: the "Green-Eyed Monster."
In The Merchant of Venice, The Bard had already linked the color green with envy when Portia says: "And shudd'ring fear, and green-eyed jealousy!". Then, in Othello, the arch-villain Iago warns the protagonist, who is blind with jealousy over his wife Desdemona's alleged affair with Cassio: "O, beware, my lord, of jealousy! / It is the green-eyed monster which doth mock / The meat it feeds on."
9Jessica
Credit: Pixabay
William Shakespeare not only invented words, turned nouns into verbs, and added prefixes, but he's also credited with having coined a few female names that are still very popular today. Miranda, Olivia, Cordelia, and Imogen are just some of them.
This is also the case with Jessica, who first appears in The Merchant of Venice as the rebellious daughter of Shylock. As was his habit, it is believed that the author anglicized a biblical name from the Old Testament —possibly 𝘠𝘪𝘴𝘬á𝘩. Some years later, in the late 18th century, people in Britain began naming their daughters Jessica after the Shakespearean character. Fast forward to this day, the name has crossed the pond, and chances are you have a friend or cousin named Jessica.
10Unfriend
Credit: VariousPhotography
Shakespeare loved to play with language: he invented words, redefined others, and gave new life to thousands of forgotten terms and expressions. As far as we know he especially liked to add the prefix un-. He created or gave new meanings to more than 300 words that begin with it, such as unaware, unreal, uncomfortable, and undress. One of the most curious words in this group is unfriend.
Although the word already existed, it had not been used as a verb before the 17th century. The English author includes it in several of his works to refer to someone who has been left alone, without friends. For example, it appears in the romantic comedy Twelfth Night and King Lear: "Will you, with those infirmities she owes, / Unfriended, new-adopted to our hate." In the 21st century, the term had a revival with the advent of Facebook. Shakespeare could never have imagined the rise of social media, but he would surely be happy that his contributions to language are still relevant today.

The MUMMY and the MONKEY
Robert Thiel
Among the more memorable props from 1950s sci-fi movies were the Martian war machines, designed by Albert Nozaki, for The War of the Worlds (1953). These weren’t stereotypical flying saucers but sinister manta ray-shaped craft with articulated cobra-like heat-ray projectors. Three of the craft were made for the film out of copper. The distinctive sound effect of the heat-ray weapon was created by an orchestra performing a written score, mainly with violins and cellos. For many years, it was used as a standard ray-gun sound on children's TV and in the original Outer Limits series. The machines also fire a pulsing green ray from their wingtips, generating a distinctive sound while disintegrating their targets. This sound effect – created by striking a high tension cable with a hammer – was reused in the original series of Star Trek to accompany the launch of photon torpedoes. The sound when the Martian ships begin to move was also reused by Star Trek as the sound of an overloading hand phaser.

New Orleans Uncovered
Derby Gisclair
1900: Canal Street
A photograph by John Norris Teunnison from 1900 looking up Canal Street toward the lake from a vantage point between Magazine and Camp Streets on the left and Decatur and Chartres Streets on the right.
This is a fairly typical scene at the time with no automobiles but plenty of draymen hauling freight and cargo both ways on either direction on Canal Street and the neutral ground (median) chock full of streetcars. The one notable exception is the statue of Henry Clay that should have been just about dead center in the background at the St. Charles Avenue – Royal Street intersection.
The statue of Henry Clay had been a fixture on Canal Street for more than forty years and was not only a landmark but was also a popular meeting place. The statue, which now stands in the center of Lafayette Square, had become an impediment to streetcar traffic and had to be relocated. Looking at the sea of streetcars on Canal Street one can understand the city’s decision.

Nickel-A-Dance Fall 2024 Season to Begin on Frenchmen Street
by: OffBeat Staff
The fall 2024 season of Nickel-A-Dance, a beloved free traditional jazz concert series, is set to begin on September 29. For over three decades, Nickel-A-Dance has brought live jazz to the public, offering an afternoon of family-friendly entertainment on Sundays from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. This year, the series moves to a new location at Favela Chic, located at 525 Frenchmen Street, continuing its tradition on this famous music corridor.
Originally started in 1994, Nickel-A-Dance has become a staple for fans of New Orleans jazz who may not frequent nightclubs. It attracts a diverse crowd, including children, families, and seniors, all coming together to celebrate traditional jazz as America’s original dance music. This fall’s lineup will feature some of the city’s most renowned jazz musicians.
The season kicks off on September 29 with trumpeter Kevin Louis and The Palm Court Jazz Band. Louis, a New Orleans native and graduate of the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts (NOCCA), has toured internationally and performed with legends such as Jimmy Heath and the Duke Ellington Orchestra. He brings The Palm Court Jazz Band, previously a fixture at the now-closed Palm Court Jazz Café, to the stage for a lively opening night.
On October 6, Nickel-A-Dance will host Duke Heitger and The Crescent City Joymakers. Heitger, a classic jazz trumpeter known for his virtuosity, has performed internationally and is a long-standing performer on the Steamboat Natchez. His band is a staple of Nickel-A-Dance and promises a night of spirited traditional jazz.
Next, on October 13, Mark Braud and His Sunday Night All-Stars will take the stage. Braud, part of the musical Brunious and Santiago families, has been a fixture in the New Orleans jazz scene since his youth. He has performed with Harry Connick Jr., Preservation Hall Jazz Band, and many other notable artists. His band will bring a blend of traditional jazz and contemporary flair to the series.
Lars Edegran and The Palm Court Jazz All-Stars are set to perform on October 20. Edegran, originally from Sweden, has been a New Orleans resident since 1966 and is known for his versatility on piano, guitar, and banjo. He has worked with jazz greats like Earl Hines and George Lewis, and his band will showcase the best of New Orleans traditional jazz.
The fall series will conclude on October 27 with Gregg Stafford and The Jazz Hounds. Stafford, a respected trumpeter and vocalist, has led several prominent New Orleans jazz bands, including Danny Barker’s Jazz Hounds and the Young Tuxedo Brass Band. He has dedicated his career to preserving the musical traditions of New Orleans and remains an active figure in the city’s jazz community.

Historic BK House and Garden's Soiree in the Vieux Carre-Sunday, September 29, 2024 | 5:00 – 8:00 PM
Please join us as the sun sets over Chartres Street for our annual Soirée in the Vieux Carré.
This year’s event is sure to be magical with music by John Boutté and Amber Rachelle & The Sweet Potatoes and a delicious Sunday supper by 12 Seasons Catering & Events.
Each year, our annual fundraiser supports a major capital improvement project, ensuring the long-term viability and versatility of the site. This year’s fundraiser will support major restorations to interior plaster and masonry.
We are pleased to be honoring our generous patron, the late Avis Ogilvy-Moore, whose bequest has allowed BK House to set up an Endowment fund, ensuring the long-term viability of the organization.
The Historic BK House & Gardens is a National Historic Landmark built in 1826. This architectural treasure is an outstanding example of a raised center hall villa and includes both Creole and American features in an elaborately detailed residence. BK House’s diverse history includes the stories of those who both lived and labored here for nearly 200 years, offering a unique educational experience to visitors, which furthers the understanding of New Orleans history. The house, parterre garden and lovely courtyard have been featured in several films and television shows and are favorites for guided tours, weddings, and special events.

The most unique comedy show in New Orleans is The Open Mic From Hell, hosted by Chris Trew (as seen on MTV, Comedy Central, America's Got Talent)
CHNO ( Comedy house New Orleans)
609-610 Fulton St
New Orleans, LA 70130
Mon, August 19
8:00 pm - 10:00 pm
(Entry at 7:30 pm)
The Open Mic From Hell is the most unique night of comedy in New Orleans.
Everything about the show is chaotic and unpredictable in the most beautifully hilarious way.
The list of performers? A total mystery.
The jokes they’ll tell? Nobody knows, not even them.
How does it work? Comedians sign-up on the list an hour before showtime. At least 13 names get pulled out of the bucket.
When a name gets pulled they come on stage and make a choice - do they do an entirely new set based on words from the audience, or a special challenge set.
Past challenges have had comics doing their set outside on the street, with noise canceling headphones on, and with a designated heckler in the crowd. We are always adding new, improved, and ridiculous challenges to the show.

Billy Nungesser Lt. Governor of Louisiana
For the fourth consecutive year, Louisiana will showcase its vibrant culture in the 2025 Tournament of Rose Parade in Pasadena, California! This year’s float, featuring a Louisiana alligator adorned with beads, a Cajun dance hall, and pots of boiled seafood, perfectly captures the essence of a “Louisiana Saturday Night.” Plus, enjoy mid-parade entertainment by rising country star Timothy Wayne!
We can’t wait to share Louisiana’s celebratory spirit and unique culture with the world once again.
