Dear Congregation:

This Sunday we begin the season of Advent. It is a time of preparation and expectation for the coming of the Christ Child. Throughout the weeks of December, we will be reflecting on what it means to prepare our hearts and minds for the birth of Christ. We consider what difference his life made to the world and what difference our lives can make in the world in which we live.

As we prepare, you are encouraged to use the Advent devotional booklet that has been prepared by the Worship Committee. Members and friends of the congregation have written a meditation for each day of this season. I know you will appreciate getting to know people in new ways through their thoughts and reflections.

One of our members, Kevin Coyle, often writes meditations and prayers that he posts on Facebook.  I appreciate his thoughtful insights. Today, as we prepare for Advent, I’d like to share one of Kevin’s recent prayers. This prayer is inspired by Psalm 45:17.

“I will perpetuate your memory through all generations; therefore the nations will praise you forever and ever.” His prayer is titled, “Exchanges of the Heart.”

We live in this world ever-changing, still. Your words remain eternal. In every gesture and gentle utterance you forged memories carried on. Help us to do the same in our life here. We never know what impact we may have. One phrase can inspire good, renewing a life. A small word lifting can smooth life’s winding road. A moment of silence can bring comfort of the deepest kind. Guide us that we may heal and mend, just as You did O so long ago.
A Further Note:
Our Congregational Meeting is next Sunday, December 9 th . We will be meeting in the Community Room and lunch will be served. Following the meeting, you are welcome to help clean-up as well as help begin work on the Putz. If you have never worked with the Putz, here’s a great chance to worship, we will enjoy a soup lunch and then begin the decorating of our church buildings for the Advent and Christmas season.

Food for Thought
"I tried to present the Christian hope no longer as such an 'opium of the beyond' but rather as the divine power that makes us alive in this world." ( Jürgen Moltmann, 20th century)
Sunday Worship
First Sunday in Advent
This Sunday we will be hearing the Infancy Narratives from Luke 1: 5-66. In these verses we hear of the annunciation of the birth of John the Baptist, of Jesus, of Mary’s response in song as she visits with her cousin, Elizabeth.
We will begin lighting the four advent candles as we move towards Christmas. This morning communion will be served to you as you are seated in the pews.  The Senior Choir will be singing. The Rev. Carolyn Roberts will be preaching.

Please dress for the weather. The boilers are still being repaired and it may be colder than usual in the Sanctuary.
A dult Education

Let’s Study the Bible                       9:30 – 10:15 a.m.
Meets in the Liz Coffey Room, basement of the main sanctuary building
In this class, we will seek to draw out the major themes found in the Lectionary scripture texts on which the sermon will be based. Exploring the lectionary Scriptural texts before the Sunday morning worship (10:30 a.m.) service will help prepare participants to more fully involved and more present in worship. Come join us as we seek to accurately anticipate what the morning’s sermon topic will be. Getting it right is a lot of fun.
Facilitated by Stefan Mach.

Preparing for Christmas by Father Richard Rohr

“Advent is not about a sentimental waiting for the Baby Jesus,” Richard Rohr asserts. Advent is a time to focus our expectations and anticipation on “the adult Christ, the Cosmic Christ,” who challenges us to empty ourselves, to lose ourselves, to surrender.
