Dear Congregation:

I hope that you can come this Sunday afternoon for an event we are calling, “Creating Community Through Transformative Planning and Programming.” We’ll meet from 1-5 in the Community Room. A light lunch will be provided for participants. Please let me know if you will need childcare.

You will have an opportunity to meet other members of the church as we imagine and plan our programs for the coming year. Rather than working in our individual groups, committees and teams, consider being part of an all church planning process that will create community and programs and possibilities that can transform the life of our church and community. Areas of focus — education for all ages, community outreach, evangelism, youth and young adults, 275 th  anniversary year activities. Participants will meet in groups around their interests and ideas. Those ideas will be brought together onto a master calendar that will guide us as a congregation in the coming year.

Bring your energy and hope for the coming year as we imagine the ways we can create community through our program life at ERUCC.

Food for Thought

"There are really only two kinds of prayer: help me, help me, help me, and thank you, thank you, thank you."
(Anne Lamott. She later added "Wow"--a prayer of praise and wonder.)
Sunday Worship
The disciples ask Jesus to teach them to pray in our Gospel lesson for today, Luke 11: 1-13.   In this passage Jesus teaches his followers the prayer we know as The Lord’s Prayer, Jesus’ Prayer, The Our Father, or The Prayer Jesus Taught. Prayer shapes the heart of a disciple’s relationship with God. As Jesus taught and modeled, prayer keeps us nourished to live and share the good news of God’s love in Christ. In Colossians 2:6–15, (16–19) we are encouraged to be planted and built up in Christ.
This morning, we will be receiving new members into the life of the church.

Traits of a Healthy Spirituality
Sister Melannie Svoboda defines and describes 20 specific indicators of a healthy spirituality. The indicators: self-esteem, wonder, joy, friendship, courage, tolerance, and the like, are "signs" rooted in life, yet solidly based on Scripture. Led by Allen Maples and Cindy Duranko.

CHANGE IN SUNDAY SERENDIPTY SCHEDULE FOR JULY 28TH
Our scheduled speaker for this Sunday is unable to come so I am scheduling, “Conversation with Pastor Daniel.” I’m looking for a lively conversation on whatever is on your mind – property issues, finances, things you want to do, trends in church life at ERUCC and/or the USA, whatever.
On Monday, July 29 at 7 pm, join us at the ERUCC Downtown Community Room, 15 West Church Street in Frederick, for an author talk and book signing with Shannon Watts, founder of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America and author of “Fight Like a Mother: How a Grassroots Movement Took on the Gun Lobby and Why Women Will Change the World.”

On the morning of December 14, 2012, stay-at-home-mom Shannon Watts was folding laundry when the news broke that there had been a shooting in Newtown, Connecticut involving young children. Outraged and heartbroken, Shannon felt an overwhelming need to act. Discovering there was no organization for gun violence similar to MADD—Mothers Against Drunk Driving—she vowed to build it.

“Fight Like a Mother” is the powerful story of how one mother’s cry for action started a national women’s movement. Moms Demand Action has established chapters in all 50 states and, along with Mayors Against Illegal Guns, Students Demand Action, and the Everytown Survivor Network, is part of Everytown for Gun Safety, the largest gun violence prevention organization in the country with nearly 6 million supporters

This event is presented in partnership with Curious Iguana and Evangelical Reformed United Church of Christ (ERUCC). Free and open to the public; no registration required. Books will be available for purchase and signing at the event. For more information, contact Curious Iguana at 301-695-2500, info@curiousiguana.com.

Frederick City Feeder School Supply Distribution
Thursday, August 15 th is the date for the annual Frederick City Feeder School Supply distribution. You can help children and youth in our community get off to a great start as they begin a new school year by donating school supplies, funds for the purchase of supplies, and volunteering at the annual Frederick City School Supply distribution day.

The Religious Coalition along with volunteers from local churches, The Temple School, the Rotary Club of Carroll Creek, and other community members will help distribute school supplies for the 2019-20 school year to Frederick City families in need.

The school supply drive will be held at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 199 North Place, Frederick. We have access the entire building and so have expanded the distribution day to include a reading area and the ability to have activities as the families wait for distribution to start.

Hope you can help.  We need volunteers from 8 am to 8 pm registering families, organizing the supplies, supervising in the movie area, reading books, distributing supplies, and clean-up.

Here is a sign-up link for volunteers:
If you wish to make a donation of school supplies, see the attached list. You can donate school supplies through the United Way's "Stuff the Bus" program at various locations around the county or drop the supplies off on the day of distribution on August 15 th .

You can also make a financial donation through the Religious Coalition https://www.thereligiouscoalition.org/support-us/donate/ .  Scroll to the bottom of the page to find the donate online link for a one-time donation to school supplies.  There is also information on how to donate by mail. Please mark your checks “school supplies.”

The funds given through the Coalition are then spent on school supplies by me and other members of the “buying” team.
Can't help with the distribution? Perhaps you can add one of these items to your shopping list and drop it off at church? Click HERE for the list of supplies.
