Thurston PTA Beach Cleanup
Saturday, October 26 from 9AM -12PM
Location: Thalia Beach

Join us for our 2nd annual Thurston PTA Beach Cleanup. This year we are starting at Thalia and families can make their way south to Brooks Street or head north to Main Beach.

  • If 75 students and adults signup in the link below, Thurston PTA will receive 20 Disneyland tickets that will be used as student prizes for the Kindness Challenge in January (10 lucky kids will win 2 Disneyland tickets in an opportunity drawing).
  • PTA will provide environmentally friendly trash bags and latex free gloves.
  • PTA will also provide water in compostable cups, coffee and snacks.
  • Bring your beach gear if you plan on making it a family beach day. Some of the kids might want to surf, skimboard, boogie board or just have fun tossing the football.
  • Great way for families to spend quality time together and for new families to meet new people!
  • El morro, TOW, High School families and the community are all welcome to join us.

Meet the Thurston Team

This week we are pleased to highlight:

Megan Bhaskaran

Social Studies Teacher
Birthday- August 3

Tell us about yourself.
I was born in Anchorage, Alaska and lived there until the end of kindergarten. After that, I spent the rest of my childhood and teen years in Sacramento. When my mom told me that if I went to UC Davis for college I would have to live at home, I decided to instead attend UC Irvine, where I studied Sociology, Education, and History. After college I joined the US Peace Corps which gave me a chance to give back to the world in a positive way while also getting to live abroad -- both of which are things that I have always wanted to do. I had the luck of being placed in Saint Lucia where I lived for a very sunny and beautiful two years. Once I was back in the United States, I chose to go into teaching, and once I got my credential from UC Irvine, I have been a middle school teacher ever since.

Tell us the best advice you have for students and/or the best advice you have for parents.
Explore your world! Go on adventures, ask questions, eat the weird food, and speak to (kind) strangers.

What’s your favorite drink?
Hot or iced coffee or latte with coconut milk!

Are you usually early or late?
If you're not ten minutes early, you are already late!

When people come to you for help, what do they usually want help with?
Cleaning, (un)packing, and organizing. I have a tradition to rearranging and organizing one of my best friend's walk in pantry every time I visit their house and have helped an endless list of people unpack their houses when they move in. I love it!

Who’s your go to band or artist when you can’t decide on something to listen to?
Taylor Swift, Beyonce, and Lady Gaga!

What’s worth spending more on to get the best?
Comfortable shoes!! As I get older I always regret buying cheap shoes without support. As teachers we are on our feet all day and my feet get so sore! It's worth it to pay a little bit more to have happy feet.

Thank you Megan Bhaskaran for participating in our interview!
Thank you to Heather Miller and Jenny Sabol for volunteering for
Ball Room Last Week!

Thank you to everyone who volunteered for WEB Ping Pong last Wednesday!

Charity Morsey, Hang Tran Arrasin, Lee Otterholt, Lourdes de Quillien, MaryBeth Pugh, Michelle Foley, Russ Watson, Steven Sinay, Trisha Dearing, Summer Thacker
Ball Room Sign Up

A parent volunteer is needed at lunch time each day to check out balls.

The job entails showing up at the specified time, going to the Ball Room, pulling out the sign-out sheet for the balls, monitoring that kids sign the balls out.

After 45 minutes and the end of lunch, the kids will return the balls, the parent volunteer puts the sign-out sheet away and the job is completed.

You can sign up for a weekly, monthly, or one time experience. It takes less than one hour of your time. Questions? Contact Ball Room Chair Leslie Heard HERE
Sign Up For Super Hike!
Many open spots!

Super Hike volunteers make a commitment to be at school during a specific time to accompany the students on their P.E. hike. The hike is always on a block day (Thursday/Friday) and usually takes place once a month. It is a fun and invigorating opportunity to spend time with the kids and we are grateful for your desire to be a part of it.
