Tibetan Astrological Calendar

The “Thangka Which Wards Off Harm From All Directions. (Srid pa hog)” is a representation of the basic concepts of Tibetan astrology. It depicts a beautifully detailed Tibetan astrology calendar design filled with Wisdom Beings, Protectors, and Auspicious Animals. The lunar-based Tibetan Calendar combines influences from India, China, Persia, and Greece.  Very important to Tibetan culture, the calendar is used to set dates for auspicious events and sacred Buddhist ceremonies. It follows natural cycles of time, the seasons and the planets, and is associated with enhancing physical and emotional balance.

The Tibetan calendar is based on a 1207 translation of the Kalachakra Tantra. The Kalachakra Heruka monogram symbol appears at top center under the three main Bodhisattvas: Avalokiteshvara, Manjusri and Vajrapani - representing Compassion, Wisdom and Power. The 4 Auspicious Animals (Dragon, Garuda, Tiger, Snow Lion) are shown in the 4 corners and the Wind Horse carrying the Wish-fulfilling Jewel of Enlightenment appears in the center of the painting below a Yantra for Good Fortune, Wealth and Spiritual Well-Being. At the bottom of the painting is a large Golden Tortoise, an emanation of Manjushri, the Bodhisattva of Wisdom, upon which are pictured the 12 animals of the 60 year cycle, the nine magic squares and eight trigrams. Surrounding this are symbols of the eight planets, various protective seals, mantras, and auspicious verses.

This unique thangka painting is the largest one we have in our collection of thangkas. The painting is 23 inches x 32 inches. With the brocade, it measures 37 inches x 66 inches. It takes a large wall to display this highly detailed hand-painted piece. I don’t have room to hang it so it’s been rolled up for nearly 2 decades. It’s in good condition but it needs to hang for a while to acclimatize to its environment. It is priced to sell - $350 or best offer. If you'd like more information, write to me at prayerflags2@gmail.com.

Gyaltsen Semo Sutra - Victorious Banner

Gyaltsen Semo Prayer Flag - 19"x26" single print on 100% cotton fabric

On sale during September - $12 (regularly $16)

Gyaltsen Semo, the sutra printed on this Banner of Victory, was imparted to Indra, King of the Gods, by the Buddha Sakyamuni. Facing defeat by the Asuras, Indra was instructed to repeat this Sutra and write it on a banner in order to achieve victory over all obstacles and enemies. This exquisitely drawn traditional Tibetan Prayer flag portrays the "Four Dignities" in the corners. On the left side are the Eight Auspicious Symbols and down the right side are the eight precious possessions of a Monarch (minister, queen, wish fulfilling jewel, vase, horse, general, golden wheel elephant). At the bottom of the banner is the Wind Horse of good fortune among the five sensuous offerings. At the top center sits Sakyamuni Buddha in a subduing pose surrounded by the eight glorious offerings. The composite creatures depicted in the center of the banner symbolize peace and harmony in the Union of Opposites. Above them flies the glorious Banner of Victory.

Dharma Caps

Don't forget to look at our popular "Dharma Caps."

Our line of “Dharma Caps” combines beautifully embroidered auspicious Buddhist symbols with high quality fitted caps. These ancient symbols represent aspects of Awakened Mind: Compassion, Wisdom, Power, etc. Since caps are worn on the highest part of the body we felt that displaying sacred emblems on them would honor the symbols’ meanings and would promote spiritual awareness, peace and harmony in the world. The explanations of the symbols on the caps can be seen on the product detail pages.

We chose Flexfit to make our caps. They manufacture the highest quality caps. The main innovation of Flexfit Caps is the built in flexible poly-weave spandex band . There are no buckles, Velcro strips or “expansion holes” in the back, just a continuous smooth comfortable band.

Sizes: Dharmacaps are available in two sizes. The Small size fits hat sizes 6 3/4 – 7 1/8" (21”- 22 3/4” around) and the Large size fits 7 1/8 – 7 5/8 (22 1/2”- 24 ̋”).

This Month's Naga Calendar

(See our website for more information about Naga Offerings and Prayer Flag Ceremonies)

During the 7th lunar month of the Tibetan year, the Nagas are feasting and enjoying their food. If you make offerings to them on a teb (good) day this month, your area will not suffer from drought and you will never go hungry. If you make offerings to the Nagas during a dok (bad) day, no Naga will attend your ceremony - meaning there will be no result.

There are many very good days to perform offering ceremonies for the nagas during this month - September, 3, 14, 21, 23, 25, and Oct. 1 (Dharmapala day) are the best days. There are only four days that are doks (bad Naga days). The worst are September 11 (Medicine Buddha day), and 12th.
