As Maryland has already lifted most restrictions for public gatherings, people are once again meeting in person with more regularity. It is, however, vital to note that children, the immunocompromised, and near 30% of unvaccinated adults are still at risk. For the sake of the most vulnerable, and with the rise of more aggressive strains of the virus, churches must welcome their guests with discretion and responsibility.
For that reason, we strongly encourage churches that are reopening to develop a method to track attendance at in-person worship and other gatherings. This is important in case someone develops COVID-19 and contact tracing is required. There are several ways to implement a system that accounts for attendance:
- Utilize a “guest book” ledger for visitors to sign-in.
-
Provide and collect printed contact sheets for every service. (download template)
- Web-based applications that enable electronic reservations or pre-registration
In any case, the date, name, email and phone number should be collected from each individual or family attending service. Naturally, the specifics of implementing a record-keeping system are up to churches themselves, based on size and volunteer support. Such information would be extremely helpful should contact tracing be required. It would also certainly be appreciated by your guests.

Baltimore Church embraces the Mathew 25 vision
Just one day after our last Tidings, the Presbyterian News Agency published a terrific article by Charese Jordan Moore, ruling elder at Knox Presbyterian Church. She describes how the obstacles imposed by a pandemic actually motivated Knox to become a more vital congregation - outside the church's walls.
"Although members were shut in and faced with many challenges, the congregation dug deep to stay connected with each other and reached out to the community."

We are saddened to report that Rev. Charles Gyle died on June 13th. He was ordained in 1965 by Philadelphia Presbytery and transferred to Baltimore in 1973 to serve the Hamilton Presbyterian Church. Rev. Gyle served that congregation for nearly three decades until his retirement in 2001. He studied engineering at Johns Hopkins University and also studied at Gordon College and the Reformed Episcopal Seminary. For memorial information, visit his obituary.

Highland Presbyterian’s Butterfly Garden
Highland Presbyterian Church received a flat of swamp milkweed and several additional native plants through the Susquehanna Parish Earth Day event this past April. After talking with the Trustees, a planting location was determined on the south side of the church by the new sidewalk in the cemetery. Claudia Scarborough planted the milkweed in May and the children in Sunday School kept it watered and weed-free in the weeks following. The children also made signs for the newly established butterfly garden. It is the intention to have a “Butterfly Release” to memorialize the passing of loved ones. Five of the eight families that regularly attend Sunday School have been affected by the loss of a grandparent in the past year. This symbolic release will occur later in the summer based on the laying of the butterfly eggs.
