What is Trinity Sunday?

A feast that celebrates “the one and equal glory” of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, “in Trinity of Persons and in Unity of Being” (BCP, p. 380). It is celebrated on the first Sunday after Pentecost. Trinity Sunday is one of the seven principal feasts of the church year (BCP, p. 15). The proper readings and collect for Trinity Sunday are used only on the feast, not on the weekdays following. The numbered proper which corresponds most closely to the date of Trinity Sunday is used (BCP, p. 228). The BCP also provides the proper “Of the Holy Trinity” for optional use at other times, subject to the rules of the calendar of the church year (see BCP, pp. 251, 927). The Hymnal 1982 presents ten hymns in a section on The Holy Trinity (Hymns 362-371), including “Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty!” (Hymn 362), “Come, thou almighty King” (Hymn 365), and “Holy Father, great Creator” (Hymn 368).

Celebration of Trinity Sunday was approved for the western church by Pope John XXII in 1334. This feast is associated with Thomas Becket (c. 1118-1170), who was consecrated bishop on Trinity Sunday, 1162. His martyrdom may have influenced the popularity of the feast in England and the custom of naming the remaining Sundays of the church year “Sundays after Trinity.” The Sarum Missal and editions of the Prayer Book through the 1928 BCP named these Sundays the Sundays after Trinity. The 1979 BCP identifies this portion of the church year as the season after Pentecost, and names these Sundays the Sundays after Pentecost (see BCP, p. 32).

Help Shape Our Homecoming!

As the beautiful restoration of our church home enters its final stage, it is time to shift our focus from rebuilding to welcoming! We are forming a Grand Reopening Team to design and orchestrate a vibrant calendar of events for our first few months back in our fully accessible space. This team has a fun and creative mission: to piece together a calendar of events—from special worship services to dedicated open houses for local relevant group and planning musical events. There is a working list of ideas already generated. This will be a source of possibilities along with new ideas the Team generates. If you want to help curate these milestone moments, manage the public relations, or help schedule this historic season of celebration, your "wealth, work, and wisdom" are needed. Please join us in shaping a homecoming that honors our legacy and launches our future—contact the parish office or a Vestry member to volunteer! The Team will be kicking off activities in early June.

Meet Bishop Audrey Scanlan!

Trinity has been invited to meet with our new Bishop of our newly formed Diocese of the Susquehanna. Bishop Audrey will be at the Bethlehem Diocese offices for a few days in June.

Trinity has been assigned Wednesday June 10th at 10:30am to 11:30am. We have been told that Bishop Audrey would like to tour our building. If so, we will have a walking chat with her. If we cannot tour for some reason (not accessible or weather), we will meet at the Cathedral Church of the Nativity, on the South Side. Details to follow.

If you are interested in joining us, please let a Vestry member know or email the church office as we need to know the size of the group.

Trinity’s COFFEE HOUR is SUNDAY, May 31st!

Please plan to join us this Sunday. We will meet after the service in the UCC’s ALL PURPOSE room. There will be light refreshments (pastries, fruit, etc.) and of course coffee and tea will be available.

Coffee & Fellowship Hour will be offered the last Sunday of every month immediately following the service. Mark your calendars with the following future dates: June 28th and July 26th.

We hope you'll join us!

June's Second Sunday Collection: Angels of Easton

In June, the Outreach Second Sunday collection will benefit Angels of Easton. They provide 2 full meals every day Monday to Thursday to unhoused and needy folks in Easton. They also provide services to the homeless.

This is a small, grass roots organization and volunteers serve these meals. Their needs include:

* Sterno trays (Aluminum buffet trays)

*"To-Go" or takeout containers

* Paper napkins

* Paper cups

* Condiments (ketchup, mustard, mayonnaise, salt, pepper, preferably in plastic jars)

* Grooming items for the homeless - wipes, shampoo, soap and deodorant

* Coolers

Volunteer Opportunity: English Language Tutoring

The English Language Classes program, an adult ESL program which operates at the Cathedral of the Nativity, is looking for volunteers. The free, non-denominational program has been in operation since 2021 and currently serves over 60 community members. Tutors help students improve their confidence in English speaking and listening, enhance familiarity with customs and procedures, and address needs by referring to appropriate resources. In addition, through participation in the program tutors help create the safe and welcoming community we all want for the Bethlehem area.

Classes run from 7-9PM twice weekly, and tutors should commit to attending four or more sessions per semester. No experience is needed and there is no need to speak a second language. Orientation and training is provided. A Pennsylvania criminal background check is required.

Anyone who is interested may call Ceil Connelly-Weida, one of the team volunteers, at 610-653-3278.
