Are you one of those people who looks forward to Fall as the beginning of a new year? I certainly do! I love the weather, the leaves turning and sleeping with my windows open. I also enjoy nesting for the upcoming cooler weather. September inspires me to use my imagination to create a new routine, setting intentions and, of course, to be more organized. Fall is a perfect time to make space and create flow around your home by being gentle with yourself and the clutter which may be surrounding you.
If you haven't seen Netflix's Tidying Up with Marie Kondo, you might be surprised to learn that the emphasis of the show is not about judgment or the amount of stuff cluttering a home, it is about cultivating empathy for ourselves and the things that are living with us.
One of the hardest things my clients deal with in decluttering their home is indecision: "Will they need again this one day?"; "Will they be able to buy it again?"; "It's never been used". But, by far, the most difficult part of decluttering and organizing a home is parting with sentimental items. In Tidying Up, Marie Kondo allows her clients to give thanks for the sweet memories and helps her clients find joy by making space for them to honor precious heirlooms.
Many of my clients have been in their homes for decades and have decided to downsize, move, or are now empty nesters ready to move on to their next chapter. Although this is exciting it can be very overwhelming: Where do you start? How do you decide? Will I regret what I get rid of? I can tell you from experience, once you start the process, it becomes easier and so gratifying to keep what truly matters. Handling each item is a touchstone to the past but also a doorway to the future which only you can create. The decision is yours.
