TIFTON MEN FACE UNDERAGE VAPE SALES CHARGES

By FRANK SAYLES JR.

Tifton Grapevine

A Tift County Sheriff's Office undercover investigation at local vape stores has resulted in the arrest of four Tifton men for selling vapes to an individual under age 21.

Based on community tips, Sheriff's Office investigators conducted underage vape buys at numerous vape stores Thursday leading to the arrests.

The Sheriff's Office identified those arrested as:

  • Saeed Abuali at Tobacco & Vapor Depot, 1909 U.S. Highway 82 West;

  • Abdullah Gamal Ahmed Al-Tawil at Tifton Tobacco & Vapor, 1878 U.S. Highway 82 West;

  • Chandresha Vishwanath at 101 Smoke Shop, 1605 U.S. Highway 82 West; and

  • Navjot Singh at 501 South Central Avenue.

Each man is charged with selling vape to a person under age 21.

It is illegal for anyone to provide any tobacco or vapor product to anyone under the age of 21. It is also illegal for anyone under 21 to purchase or receive any vapor or tobacco product.

"The CDC, Center For Disease Control, states that science shows that vapes contain ingredients that are both addictive and could harm different parts of your bodyNicotine can even train your brain and make you more vulnerable to other drug addictions," said Tift County Sheriff Gene Scarbrough. "Our office will always do whatever we can to safeguard the youth of this community."

TACKLING TEEN CRIME BEGINS AT HOME, TIFTON CHIEF SAYS

By FRANK SAYLES JR.

Tifton Grapevine

Tifton, like many towns today – especially those along the interstate – have had its share of crime and shootings in recent years.

In just the past few weeks, there have been reports of shots fired in neighborhoods, some striking homes and other buildings. And in recent months, some shootings have been fatal.

Many of these incidents involve teenagers.

All this has prompted Tifton Police Chief Steve Hyman to take to social media Tuesday and make a plea to local parents and the community at large.

"Parents, listen up," Hyman wrote. "We have teenagers in our community with guns. They’re not just carrying them; they’re using them. They’re shooting at each other. They’re shooting at each other's homes. They’re putting you, your family, your neighbors, and innocent people in the crossfire.

"And every time we ask questions, we hear the same line: 'My kid wouldn’t do that,' or 'I don't know.' But someone’s kid is, and it might be yours."

The police chief told parents they either know, or should know, what their kids are doing – "who they are hanging out with or bringing into your house. If you don’t, it’s time to find out. Look in their rooms. Check their social media. Ask questions. Be involved. Don’t wait until you’re identifying them at the morgue, picking them up at the police station, or visiting them behind bars.

"Let’s be clear: The path that some are on leads to prison or the grave, and it doesn't have to be this way," Hyman said.

The Tifton chief is calling on parents, families, and "our juvenile justice system, our prosecutors, and every part of the court system to step in and step up. When young people are caught with guns, fighting, or putting others at risk, we need consequences, accountability, and consistency."

It is not too late to turn the situation around, Hyman said. "But it will take all of us — families, role models, law enforcement, schools, the courts, and community members — pulling in the same direction to reduce violent tendencies and protect our youth from each other."

As the police chief said, "We can’t keep losing our kids. Let’s do something about it before it’s too late; starting at home is Step One."

Despite not doing any bull-riding in years, Harper performed well as the “Celebrity Bull Rider” at the Georgia FFA fundraising event in Reeves Arena at the Georgia National Fairgrounds.

“Without the opportunities my time in Georgia FFA afforded to me, I would not be where I am today” Harper said. “I’m proud to support Georgia FFA and the work they do to enrich the lives of thousands of Georgia students."

Harper added that 'I’ll do just about anything to support Georgia FFA, including getting on the back of a bull for the first time in over 15 years."

MAIN STREET MERCHANTS ANGERED

OVER DOWNTOWN PARKING CHANGES

~ MAY 6, 1964

A group of Main Street merchants on May 6, 1964, publicly attacked the City of Tifton's newly installed tandem parallel-parking system downtown, which was a change from the previous angle parking (which Tifton has today). Several downtown merchants, claiming "economic assassination" from the reduction in Main Street parking spaces, threatened to seek a recall election of city commissioners who voted for the parking change with its two-hour limits and strict police enforcement. The merchants also criticized the Chamber of Commerce, which suggested the parking revisions.
