TIFTON EXTENDS BILLBOARD MORATORIUM

By FRANK SAYLES JR.

Tifton Grapevine

The City of Tifton has extended its moratorium on new billboard signs until Oct. 16.

Last month City Council imposed a 30-day moratorium on new billboard permits as council considers revisions to its existing sign ordinance.

At Monday's City Council meeting, the council said it was extending the moratorium after meeting recently with representatives of billboard companies and other stakeholders who shared their concerns.

"I was surprised to learn how much the DOT (Georgia Department of Transportation) is involved in billboards," said Mayor Julie B. Smith. "There is a lot specific information we need to consider. We need to move very carefully to be sure we're doing the right thing."

Among revisions the city is considering are sizes and heights of some billboards as well as regulations involving the installation of new electronic graphics display billboards.

Also Monday, council heard a proposal from City Manager Emily Beeman to amend the budget to add three officers to the Tifton Police Department and three firefighters to the city Fire Department.

Beeman said the additional police officers would help combat crime in the city, and additional firefighters would allow all substations to be staffed with three people. The total cost would be $226,000, the city manager said.

DEADLY WEEKEND IN FITZGERALD: 2 DIE IN UNRELATED SHOOTING, STABBING

By FRANK SAYLES JR.

Tifton Grapevine

The past weekend was a deadly one in Fitzgerald as one man was shot dead where a "large homecoming event" was held, and another man died of stab wounds in an apparent unrelated incident.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is investigating the shooting that resulted in the death of Quavis Hall, 22, of Fitzgerald, and a 16-year-old who was also injured in the incident.

The Fitzgerald Police Department had requested the GBI's assistance.

The GBI said that during the early morning hours of Sunday, Aug. 6, there was a large homecoming event underway at the Monitor Enrichment Program at 600 South Monitor Drive in Fitzgerald. At approximately 2 a.m., Fitzgerald Police responded to shots being fired with injuries.

Hall was found unresponsive. He was taken to Dorminy Medical Center in Fitzgerald and was later pronounced dead, the GBI said.

It was later discovered that there was a second gunshot victim who had been taken to Dorminy Medical Center. The 16-year-old was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

In another incident during the weekend in the Ben Hill County seat, Joe Hairston, 58, was stabbed to death at approximately 6 p.m. Saturday in the woods behind a residence in the 100 block of Snowden Road in Fitzgerald, authorities said.

Hairston was stabbed several times in his head and neck, authorities said.

Police have arrested William Mullis, 24, in connection with the stabbing death.
