OASIS CENTER PLANS
GRAND OPENING
ORGANIZATION ADDRESSES ADDICTION ISSUES
|
The
OASIS Recovery Community Organization
is celebrating its
grand opening
at
4-6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 28
, at its center located at
902 S. Main St.
between the Shady Lane drive-in and Short & Paulk Supply Co. in
Tifton
.
Attendees
may
tour
the center, enjoy
refreshments
, and enter for a
chance
to win a $100 Visa
gift card
.
"
Addiction
is a very
real problem
in our community and
affects everyone
regardless of age, nationality, religion or race," said Judge
Herbert W. Benson
, Tift County state court judge.
"A local
35-year-old
father
died
from an
overdose
this past weekend. But
recovery
is
possible
, and
OASIS
can play an important role in someone’s recovery. This is your opportunity to find out what's happening at OASIS. Mark your calendars for Thursday afternoon. I hope to see you there."
OASIS
stands for
"Overcoming Addiction through Sobriety, Information and Support."
It is a
Recovery Community Organization
, which will be a
resource hub
providing
services outside
of what
counseling
services or
detox
centers can do.
The center can host
professional development workshops
such as resume building or interview skills. It can help with getting people
back in school
to get their
GED
or with
paperwork
to get
financial aid
for
college
.
At a
symposium
in support of OASIS
last year
,
Neil Campbell
with the
Georgia Council on Substance Abuse
told the audience that
three to four
people
die
of
substance abuse
each
day
in
Georgia
.
"Our courts can only help those individuals who are facing
criminal charges
related to their addiction," Judge
Benson
said. "We cannot address the
needs
of those individuals and their families who are
living with the pain
of
addiction
but have
not broken the law
. Therein lies the
need
for
RCOs
."
The judge said an RCO is whatever a community wants it to be; it is specific to the
needs
of a individual
community
and the
goals
that that community wants to
achieve
.

COLQUITT SUPERINTENDENT SUSPENDS COACH PROPST
FOOTBALL COACH HAS WON 2 GA STATE TITLES
|
|
Rush Propst
, Colquitt County High's
nationally renowned
head
football coach
, has been
suspended
with pay pending an
internal investigation
into
personnel issues
, says School Superintendent
Doug Howell
.
Propst
, 61, was placed on
administrative leave
at
9 a.m. Tuesday
. The school system would
not comment
on the nature of the
investigation
. Propst, who has been the
Packers' head football coach
since
2008
, has a
119-35
record at the school and led his teams to
two Georgia state championship
tiles
and to the state
title game five
times
.
Before coming to
Moultrie
,
Propst
got
national attention
as coach at
Hoover High
in
Alabama
, where he won
five state championships
and was seen on the
MTV
cable TV series
“Two-a-Days”
which followed his teams during the
2005
and
2006
football seasons.
Propst
has been the
center
of
controversy
before. In
2015
, he
faced
a
one-year suspension
for
head-butting
a
player
on the Packers
sidelines
, but instead received a
reprimand
(as well as a bloody forehead, as seen in the photo above.)
At
Hoover
, his use of an
ineligible player
forced his team to
forfeit four
games
one season.

RURAL HOSPITALS USE VIDEO CARTS TO AID NURSES IN ABAC ONLINE PROGRAM
|
|
Six
rural hospitals
are using
grants
to install
mobile video carts
to assist
nurses
enrolled in the
bachelor of science in nursing
(BSN)
online
program at
Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College
.
“Despite the popularity,
online teaching and learning
sometimes present challenges,” says Dr.
Jaibun Earp
, dean of the
ABAC School of Nursing and Health Sciences
. “Using this dedicated
video conferencing technology
in the classroom increases faculty-student interaction and social presence which improves student learning outcomes.”
Troy Spicer
, director of the
ABAC Health Center
, says
visuals
make a difference.
“Putting a face with a name goes a long way in today’s
digital world
,” Spicer said. “Making a connection with students in an
online program, especially one as rigorous as nursing, can lead to increased
student success.”
Through the
U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Rural Utility Services/Distance Learning and Telemedicine grant,
Spicer seized the opportunity to provide dedicated video conferencing mobile video carts at Mitchell County Hospital in
Camilla
, Miller County Hospital in
Colquitt
, Phoebe Worth Medical Center in
Sylvester
, Brooks County Hospital in
Quitman
, Grady General Hospital in
Cairo
and Southwest Georgia Regional Medical Center in
Cuthbert
to allow employees interested in working on the online
BSN degree
at
ABAC
to have face-to-face conversations.
“The employees in the program can use the
video conferencing hardware
to allow for video calls so the employees can speak with faculty, get answers to questions, conduct informational/orientation sessions, and hold advising sessions,”
Spicer
said. “The application also allows for sharing content and video via
high-resolution cameras
.”
Dr.
Tami Dennis
, coordinator of ABAC’s online RN-BSN program, recently made use of the technology with BSN online student
Allison Whitaker
at
Grady General
. Even though Whitaker is not a Grady General employee, the administration there offered use of the space and the video system to others in the community who are pursuing the BSN degree.
“Rather than
Skyping
from her
home
, Allison now meets other
nurses
at
Grady General
when she’s
online
to
ABAC
,” Dennis said. “When she needs to reach out to her ABAC
nursing faculty advisor
, she has access to the board room at Grady General, which allows her to develop a
relationship
and have a
presence there
prior to completing her
bachelor’s degree
.”
