A former Tift County High School athlete has been arrested and charged with vandalizing G.O. Bailey Elementary School over the weekend.

Jeovanni Torrez of Tifton, who graduated from TCHS in 2023, is in Tift County Jail on charges of criminal damage to property in the second degree and two counts of first-degree burglary – all felonies, authorities said.

Late Saturday night or early Sunday morning, someone drove a vehicle over the fence surrounding the playground area at G.O. Bailey Elementary, said Dana Spurlin, chief of communications for Tift County Schools.

"In addition to the damage to the fence, the individual busted out 13 exterior windows and then entered the building, where they busted several more interior windows," Spurlin said.

School maintenance workers boarded up broken windows before repairs could be made.

At approximately 3:44 a.m. Sunday, Tifton Police arrested Torrez and booked him into the Tift County Jail.

The storm knocked down a tree Monday on Prince Avenue in Tifton. No damages were reported.

STORM SKIRTS TIFT, KILLS MOULTRIE MAN

Once again, Tift County has been spared from the brunt of a major storm as Tropical Storm Debby veered to the east in Georgia after coming ashore Monday morning as a Category 1 hurricane in Steinhatchee, Fla.

The Tiftarea was struck by outer bands of the storm, causing some scattered power outages and downing tree limbs. A tree was reported down across Prince Avenue on Monday. Only approximately 2.5 inches of rain was recorded in Tifton from the storm.

However, the storm was more severe in several nearby areas. Pearson and Valdosta are among areas reporting flooding, and Valdosta experienced at least four overflows in its sewage system from the tropical storm. Thousands of residents also lost power in the Valdosta area.

In Moultrie, a 19-year-old man died Monday afternoon when a tree fell on his house, authorities said. Derrien Bernard Razz was on his porch when a pine tree fell, striking the porch at 621 13th Ave. S.W.

The Moultrie death is one of at least six reported from the storm around the Southeastern United States. A 13-year-old boy also died Monday after a tree fell on a mobile home southwest of Gainesville, Fla., according to the Levy County Sheriff's Office.

In Dixie County, Fla., just east of where the storm made landfall, a 38-year-old woman and a 12-year-old boy died in a car crash on wet roads Sunday night.

A truck driver on Interstate 75 in the Tampa area died Monday after losing control of his tractor trailer, flipping over a concrete wall and dropping into the water below, police said.

Also, a 48-year-old man in Gulfport, Fla., who was on his anchored sailboat, died after his boat partially sank, authorities said.

As of Tuesday night, Tropical Storm Debby was moving slowly just southeast of Savannah. It was expected to head out to sea before making landfall again in South Carolina, which is already experiencing heavy rain, flooding, and isolated tornadoes.

Tift County Schools officials, educators, parents, and members of the Tifton-Tift County Chamber of Commerce celebrate the completion of renovations at Len Lastinger Elementary School with a ribbon cutting Thursday.

Veteran coach Blake Williams has been named head coach at the Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College baseball program.

Williams comes to ABAC after 13 years as head coach of the Andrew College Tigers, where he had 307 wins and won the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association titles in 2021 and 2023. His 2023 team also won the NJCAA Appalachian District title and competed in the NJCAA World Series.

“I’m grateful for this opportunity and to the Athletic Director Coach (Charles) Wimberly and the administration,” Williams said. “With the program’s transition to the NAIA and the Southern States Athletic Conference, it’s an exciting time for this program.”

An Oconee County native, Williams began his coaching career at Emanuel College as an assistant for two years. He served two more years as an assistant coach at Andrew College before becoming head coach.

“Blake brings a lot of veteran leadership to ABAC,” Wimberly said. “He’s a proven winner, and he has contacts throughout the state and the country.”

Williams said his job is "to get every ounce out of (players') ability and compete at the highest level. Having a family atmosphere is important, creating a situation where our players are close to each other and grind it out every day. If we do those things, we’ll be successful.”
