TORNADOES HIT OMEGA, SYLVESTER, NWS CONFIRMS
|
|
The
National Weather Service
(NWS) in Tallahassee
confirmed
that a
tornado
touched down
Sunday morning
near
Omega
in
Tift
County,
and
another one landed
just
north
of
Sylvester
in
Worth
County.
In
Tift, the NWS reports that an
EF-0 tornado
touched down at
9:19 a.m. Sunday
near
Ty Ty Sparks Road
north of
U.S. Highway 319
and traveled northeast across
Flat Ford Road
and
Keith-Fletcher Road
.
The tornado lifted just after crossing
Ty Ty Omega Road
. Damage was primarily confined to
irrigation systems
and
trees
. A
substation
sustained some
damage
, and at least one
private
shed
was
destroyed
. No injuries were reported.
The NWS said e
stimated
peak windspeed
was
85 mph
, and the
Omega tornado's
path had a width of
600
yards and a length of
1.86
miles.
The
tornado that hit
Worth County landed at about
2:45 a.m. Sunday
and was classified as an
EF-1
with
105 mph
winds, the
NWS
said.
That tornado touched down just south of

MEDICARE PENALTIES HIT MOST GA NURSING HOMES
|
|
Three out of four
nursing homes
in
Georgia
, including one in
Tifton
, have received
penalties
from
Medicare
for
"avoidable hospital readmissions"
of nursing-home patients, according
to
Georgia Health News.
The
federal government
gave
bonuses
for lower readmissions to
23
percent of the
373
nursing homes in the state
,
Georgia Health News
reports
.
Two
percent had no change under the new penalty program.
The financial incentives and penalties are determined by how often
nursing home residents return to
hospitals within
30 days of leaving.
Rehabilitation Center of South Georgia in
Tifton will lose
1.38 percent of
Medicare payments in the current fiscal year,
Kaiser Health News reports.
The program of
bonuses
and
penalties
is intended to
discourage
nursing homes from
discharging
patients too
quickly
.
Medicare
fully covers only the first
20
days of a stay and generally
stops paying
anything after
100
days,
Kaiser Health News
reported.
The
Georgia Health Care Association
, which represents
nursing homes
in the state, said it
supports
the
Medicare readmission program
.
“We are pleased to see that almost a
quarter
of Georgia
nursing centers
are receiving
quality incentive payments
through the program,’’ said
Devon Barill
, a GHCA spokesman, told
Georgia Health News
.
She said the penalty
program
“was designed to
reduce overall payments
to skilled nursing centers through a
redistribution
of funding. The very nature of this design
reduced funding
for
significantly more centers
than those that received the additional incentive payment,’’ according to
Georgia Health News.

The website

surveyed more than
1,000 adults across the country, via

In
Georgia, according to the site, the

Christmas is ...
pumpkin pie! We would have thought it would be
pecan pie.

pumpkin pie was also the
favorite, with
one-third of Americans who have a favorite
Christmas treat saying it’s their
No. 1 choice.
Egg nog came in
second with
18 percent, and
peppermint bark rounded out the
Top 3 with
16 percent of the vote.
Among
Southern states, here are the
favorites:

|
- Alabama - Peppermint Bark;
- Florida - Pumpkin Pie;

? Yep,
Vermont
did, although it was
tied
there with
pumpkin pie.

from
each state
. In
Georgia, it is "Snow Day Cookies," according to the magazine.
In must be a

Peanuts being harvested on a UGA Tifton farm.
|
|
WEATHER AFFECTING PEANUT QUALITY, YIELD
Three
weather
events this season will likely
impact
the
quality
and
yield
of a substantial amount of Georgia’s
peanut
acreage, says
Scott Monfort
,
University of Georgia
Cooperative Extension pecan agronomist in Tifton.
Three weeks of
steady rainfall
in
May
delayed the
planting
of an estimated
45
percent of Georgia’s
peanut crop
. Because of the later planting, more than
200,000
acres of peanuts were at risk when
Hurricane Michael
moved through the state
Oct. 10.
A
rainy November
added to
harvest problems
for producers.
“When the hurricane came through, it did hurt the crop a little bit, but its main and immediate
impact
was to the industry’s
infrastructure
in
Southwest Georgia
. It caused us to leave
peanuts in the field
longer than normal. We had to leave them in the field to get the infrastructure going again,”
Monfort
said.
Two to three weeks of
rain
in early
November
pushed
peanut harvest
out as much as
four
weeks, he said. Some
peanuts
have been sitting in the
field
, and several
growers
have
lost
a
significant amount
in quality and yield.
