Six FIRST Lego League Teams Competing at State Championships
Six Cedar Falls FIRST Lego League teams will compete Saturday and Sunday during the FIRST Lego League state championships at Iowa State University. The teams are  the Brick Bots, Stingray City, Shark Sharpedos, Aqua Infinity, The Evaporators and Speedsters.

The teams of 9- to 14-year-olds advanced after participating in various regional qualifiers, among about 120 from across the state. Lego League involves teams of up to 10 children guided by teachers or other adult mentors who build and program Lego Mindstorms robots.  Teams work on a challenge to solve a real-world problem related to a theme, which is "Hydro Dynamics" this year. They complete tasks that follow the theme in tabletop matches using the robots.  Scores are determined by how many missions are completed as well as by presentations on the theme teams make to a panel of judges.  An ability to work together and demonstrate they are upholding FIRST's core values also are important.

FIRST is the guiding organization that puts together the annual challenges. Its name is an acronym of For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology.
Many teams are organized through schools.

Spectators are welcome at the event, which starts at 9 a.m. each day.

More information on schedules and location plus a link to watch matches live online is available at  https://www.isek.iastate.edu/fll/iowa-championship.

Incoming Kindergarten Students for 2018-2019
Do you have a child who will be attending kindergarten next school year? Buildings are beginning to collect contact information so that we can ensure all families receive the correct paperwork and information. Current District parents will be receiving a form to fill out to return to the secretary at your child's school. It can also be accessed here.

Please share this information with anyone you know who may not yet have children in the District!

Information from Covenant Clinic
Covenant Clinic Nurses
As of January 1, 2018, the nurses and health assistants in the District will be provided by Covenant Clinic. The majority of staff have worked with students over the years, and students will recognize many of the associates who have provided exceptional care while in school. The schedules, services and care provided by Covenant Clinic staff will continue as normal with no changes.  Nurse phone numbers have changed! Please contact the health office at each building to communicate your students health needs to the staff.  Previous phone numbers for the nurses are no longer available.

Reminder on School Illness Policy
It is the policy of Cedar Falls Schools to be fever free for 24 hours without fever reducing medication before returning to classes. Students with fever of 100 or higher must remain home until resolved for 24 hours. Students must also be free of vomiting for 24 hours before returning to school.

Influenza
Influenza is a highly contagious viral infection that affects mainly the nose, throat, chest and lungs. The flu may cause mild to severe illness, and even lead to death. In the very young, the elderly, and those with other serious medical conditions, infection can lead to severe complications such as pneumonia. Everyone six months of age and older should get a flu vaccine, and it's not too late!  Getting vaccinated is not just about protecting yourself, but also protecting those around you: family members, friends, classmates, teachers, and others in your community.

Symptoms of influenza include:
  • Fever (typically ≥100° F)
  • Headache
  • Extreme tiredness
  • Dry cough
  • Sore throat
  • Runny or stuffy nose
  • Muscle aches
  • Stomach symptoms, such as nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea can occur but are more common in children than adults

Support Extending the State Penny Sales Tax
Please contact your legislator to give your support to
extending the State Penny Sales Tax !

The one-cent sales tax for school infrastructure is known in law as Secure an Advanced Vision for Education ( SAVE ). This critical funding stream is set to expire in December 2029, creating an abrupt end to millions of dollars of school funding for safe and modern buildings and other school infrastructure such as technology, while shifting the entire burden for school facility funding to property tax payers. In Cedar Falls, the extension would mean the reality of a new high school coming much sooner.
Board of Education Update
Watch the January 8 meeting.
