The Tiger's Roar!
Tildenville Elementary School Community Brief
Tuesday, June 28, 2022
Tildenville Community Member,

I hope this finds you keeping well and enjoying your summer so far! This is already our fifth week of the summer break and all of the OCPS campuses will be closed next week as we normally do each year around the July 4th holiday (closed July 4-8; reopening Monday, July 11 at 7:00am).

In this issue I have included important information related to the 2022-2023 school year as well as our PTA's summer break message. Tildenville relies heavily upon our wonderful PTA and the membership of our parents every year, so if you will have a student attending in 2022-2023, please be sure to join (PTA Facebook page). Indirect contributions to PTA via Amazon Smiles and Box Tops can be made throughout the summer as well by our families as they go about their usual consumer purchases (please see below).
Above and just below:
The 5th graders finished the end of their elementary career in style last month. The graduation celebration was beautiful! Thank you to all the teachers, staff, parents and community members who helped make this event a success! We wish our 5th graders the best of luck in middle school and don't forget, you will always be a Tiger!
At this point in the summer break I need to remind our families about a very important educational issue — the summer slide. This refers to the fact that on average, students' learning gains from the prior school year fall off especially when it comes to reading skills. Educators are very familiar with this challenge and there has been a lot of research on the topic. This is why it is so important for our young Tigers engage in some reading for pleasure this summer. Here are several interesting articles on the summer slide and suggestions for parents to get their child interested in reading.

Between our media center here at school and the Orange County Library System - Winter Garden branch, there are all kinds of reading resources available to students. Mrs. Julie Hager is our amazing media specialist and she is always ready to answer any questions a parent may have regarding popular books by grade level, how to access books online, insights about the library, and more (email: 31313@ocps.net).

Thank you very much for reading this special Tiger's Roar! summer break edition and best wishes for a safe and happy Independence Day holiday.*

OCPS Summer Reading Challenge
Oceans of Possibilities
"Oceans of Possibilities'' is the theme of Orange County Public Schools' motivational summer reading challenge. The purpose of the challenge is to motivate children to read for pleasure and to ensure that students maintain their reading skills over summer vacation.

OCPS encourages families to browse the reading lists, interactive literacy websites, e-books, parent resources, and literacy events in our community. Students may also access the OCPS's Summer Reading Challenge via LaunchPad. This challenge encourages students to read and log their minutes electronically using the Beanstack application.

As your family reads this summer, OCPS encourages you to share the literacy message via Twitter. Using the hashtag, #OCPSreads, we hope our students (over 13 years of age) and parents will share what you are reading, where you are reading and how much you are reading. Utilize the hashtag when posting pictures of books and fun places that students read over the summer, too.

Visit the OCPS LaunchPad to access the Beanstack app for your students to keep track of how many minutes they read each day. Students can record how much time they spend reading this summer.
