Project History

A quick review of the Tilton Library project

The existing Tilton Library has not met the standards or needs of the community for over a decade. In August 2014 the Town of Deerfield was awarded a Planning and Design Grant from the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners. The Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners (MBLC) is the agency of state government with the statutory authority and responsibility to organize, develop, coordinate, and improve library services throughout the Commonwealth. The Planning and Design Grant provides financial assistance to municipalities to help community prepare for the Construction Grant process. The Town of Deerfield used these funds to submit an application to the MBLC for a Construction and in 2016 it was announced that the Tilton Library was one of the recipients of this coveted grant but was put on the waitlist. In July 2022, the time came for Deerfield to be awarded this grant. This gives the municipality 6 months to approve funding for the project.

At the Special Town Meeting in October 2022, the funding of this project was approved and was then put forward for a special election. With 40% of registered voters turning out for the Special Election in December 2022, the Town voted to approve $12.3 million for the design and construction of the addition and renovation to the Tilton Library.

Since then the Building Committee, Owner's Project Manager (OPM) - P3, and Designer - Johnson Roberts Associates, have been reviewing the original design submitted for the grant, reviewing other local historical buildings in the area, getting feedback from the community at building committee meetings, the needs of the Library, and requirements set in the Grant, and keeping within the appropriation. The Building Committee recently approved the Schematic Design and progress on the design continues into design development. In Design Development we start to get into the details of the building!

Design Development

Design development refers to the phase in the design process where the initial conceptual ideas and plans are refined and developed into more detailed and concrete designs. It's a crucial stage that bridges the gap between the conceptual stage and the actual execution of a project. During design development, architects, the project manager, and town representatives work together to define and elaborate on the design concepts, ensuring that they align with the project's goals, functional requirements, budget constraints, and any relevant regulations.

The updated design brings with it a significant triumph – the preservation of the two magnificent trees at the rear. These pillars of nature will continue to grace our surroundings, symbolizing the harmony between progress and preservation. As we delve into the expansion, both inside and out, our approach is one that aims for a seamless fusion between the existing, historic building, and the new addition. This will blend timeless elements and innovative touches that is poised to create an environment that not only respects our heritage but also embraces the spirit of the present and future life of the Library and community.

The design development process for interior spaces is a delicate interplay between functionality, aesthetics, and user experience. The selection of ceiling materials, such as acoustic panels or linear wood, reflects the acoustic requirements and desired visual impact of the space. Acoustic panels contribute to noise reduction, making them apt for workspaces where focus is crucial. On the other hand, linear wood ceilings bring warmth and texture, often preferred in areas where a cozy ambiance is sought.

When it comes to finishing colors and wood materials, the palette should align with the intended mood of the space. Calming and neutral tones can be employed to cultivate a serene environment, suitable for relaxation and concentration in adult rooms. Richer wood tones and deep hues can add a touch of sophistication, enhancing the luxuriousness of the space. For children's rooms, vibrancy and playfulness should take center stage. Bright, energetic colors stimulate creativity and exploration, and using durable materials ensures longevity despite inevitable wear and tear.

In summary, each decision is intertwined with the purpose of the space and the emotions it seeks to evoke. By harmonizing these elements, designers craft interiors that cater to the needs and aspirations of both adults and children, facilitating an environment where functionality and aesthetics converge seamlessly.

The Library project is currently in the design phase and is continuously evolving to create the best possible outcome.
