Get Ready to Run! (Or Walk!)

Saturday, August 24 is our 14th annual Save a Stray 5K and Festival with L.L.Bean! Take part in the 5K run or one-mile walk with your friends, family, and, of course, your dog, in support of our 3,500 annual residents!

The festivities will kick off on Friday, August 23 with an Adopt a Stray Event from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m., where you can adopt your next four-legged family member from Midcoast Humane. L.L.Bean and Tall Tails want to make sure that each dog adopted at the event starts off on the right paw in their new homes, so they are generously sending each dog home with a L.L.Bean Boat and Tote filled with a “Tall Tails Adoption Kit.” L.L.Bean’s Food, Fun & Films weekly event follows with food trucks arriving at 6 p.m. and the family- and pet-friendly movie, Bolt begins at dusk.

L.L.Bean’s Dog Days of August follows the 5K run and one-mile walk, featuring the hugely entertaining canine aquatic competition DOCK DOGS , police dog demonstrations with Freeport's K-9 unit, a Meet n' Greet with Kris MacCabe and K-9 Morgan from “North Woods Law”, an Ask-a-Veterinarian booth with Dr. Bennett Wilson of Veterinary Quick Care Freeport, animal communicator Judy Garbow, face painting, a low-cost rabies vaccination clinic, and more. Canine celebrities “Columbo” of Adventures of Columbo and “Millie of Maine” will also make special appearances!

Think your dog is has the best trick? Or maybe eats ice cream like nothing you've ever seen? Or maybe you hear that you and your pet look-alike? Compete against other dog/owner pairs in our canine contests and you could go home with some impressive prizes like a gift card to Planet Dog. Dog/owner pairs are welcome to compete in more than one category. No need to register in advance—just show up at the stage!

Contests:
Fastest Ice Cream Eater
Costume Contest
Best Trick
Best Dog/Owner Look-alike

A Note from Our Board President

Greetings, Friends of Midcoast Humane,

On behalf of the entire Midcoast Humane Board of Directors, I’d like to thank you for your loyal, ongoing support of Midcoast Humane and our critical mission, which we couldn’t achieve without you.

I’d also like to share our heartfelt thanks to Trendy Stanchfield, who, as you know, has been our Executive Director for the past 18 months. Trendy has returned to Goodwill Industries of Northern New England for an exciting professional opportunity there, and we already miss her generosity of spirit. Like you, we appreciate her hard work, expertise and dedication to our animals and community, and we wish her all the best.

As always, we remain steadfast in our commitment to improving the quality of life for all the animals and people in our communities. We are confident that we will continue to move our work forward with a strong new Executive Director, and we look forward to sharing more on this with you next month.

In the meantime, we hope you are all enjoying a restful and happy summer!

With gratitude,

Christen Graham,
President, Board of Directors

NEW STAFF ALERT!
Welcome to our New Volunteer Coordinator, Kate McHugh-Westfall!

Kate McHugh-Westfall grew up in New England (Massachusetts), but has lived in the Baltimore/Washington DC area for the last 15 years. She and her husband, along with their four cats, are relocating to Maine to be closer to family, both her family in Massachusetts and her in-laws who live in Harpswell.

Kate, a self proclaimed “Crazy Cat Lady”, started her journey in animal welfare as a cat cuddler volunteer at her local shelter, eventually becoming a foster parent with a focus on cats that fall under the “3 S’s” - Sick, Sassy, or Senior! Most recently, she has been the Volunteer Coordinator at the the Maryland SPCA , managing 800+ active volunteers. Kate is a passionate advocate for training, communication, and community building within a volunteer program, and can’t wait to get started with the Midcoast team!

In Kate's words: “I love people and I love animals, so being able to spend all day working with people who love animals is a dream for me!"

Please join us in welcoming Kate to Maine, and feel free to give her suggestions about the best things to do in the area, especially if they include coffee, hiking, and of course cats!
Kate with her favorite officemate, Meadow.
It's kitten season and we are bursting at the seams with cats of all ages, so we are having a Kitten-Caboodle Adoption Special from August 1 - August 15! Brews for a Cause with Flight Deck Brewing!
Wednesday, August 14 | 12pm - 8pm

Our friends at Flight Deck Brewing are having us over! We will be on-site with adoptable animals on Wednesday, August 14th from 4 - 7 p.m. Flight Deck is generously donating a portion of their beer sales for the evening to support the animals of Midcoast Humane!

From 4:30-7:30 p.m., local eclectic band Off Their Rockers! will play some sweet summertime rock and roll as only they can, combining 50's-style music with elements of doo-wop, folk, and country. Their band members include a drummer, keyboardist, fiddler, a ukulele player, guitar and base players, and of course, fantastic singers.
NO PAW LEFT BEHIND: Help us get them home!
No Paw Left Behind  is a community initiative to help long-term, overlooked pets find their forever homes. Led by volunteers and staff at Midcoast Humane, the campaign ensures that every dog and cat who is ready to be adopted finds a family within 90 days. Help every animal find a home by following and sharing their stories on the No Paw Left Behind Facebook Page. Questions? Speak with an adoption counselor at (207) 449-1366. Goddard has been waiting for a home since February 2019! He is a 14-year-old shorthair, a sweet older boy who loves comfy beds, a good snack, and ear scratches. He would do best in a home where he is the only cat. His adoption fee has been waived. He is being treated for a chronic hyperthyroid condition that will need lifelong medication and regular care with his veterinarian. Don't pass up this sweetie pie!
Ashton has been waiting for a home since February 1, 2019! He is a gentle soul who develops the sweetest kitty friendships with cats in the room with him, but he is not quite sold on humans. He is looking for a calm home, preferably one with other outgoing kitties that will help him come out of his shell. A quick tip from our cat volunteers: even though Ashton prefers to observe people from afar rather than demonstrate affection toward them, he can't resist Purely Fancy Feast chicken treats. Come with those in hand and he'll come say hello! This handsome boy is just over 1 year old.
Cylene has been waiting for a home since January 20, 2018! This 3-year-old is one smart cookie, she knows sit, paw, and roll over...and is eager to learn more! She will know she’s forever home when she has a yard to run and fetch balls in. Her absolute favorite is to be tucked into her bed with a comfy blanket. She is food-motivated and guards her possessions (food, rawhides, toys), so it's important that her human companions be 16 years or older. No cats for this girl, though the right dog could work after a "meet and greet" at the shelter. She's a goofy fun-loving girl who is ready to be home at last! Please call 207-449-1366 to set up a meet and greet with Cylene!

Jada has spent her entire life in shelters. She came to Midcoast Humane in the spring from a partner shelter in West Virginia where she'd been for the last SIX YEARS! (Are you crying? We're crying.) She's around 6 years old, and her fans back home are hoping her special someone is here in Maine. WE THINK THAT SOMEONE IS HERE AND READING THIS RIGHT NOW! She is on the reserved side (understandable, considering her past!) but enjoys being petted, though not necessarily picked up. In her two months with us at Midcoast, she's already blossomed, and we know she'll continue to bloom in her new home, and turn into her fabulous and contented self AT LAST.
In her last life, Magenta was an Egyptian goddess. She originally came to the shelter at the end of 2018, after having suffered a bite wound of some kind. She then had to spend four months in state-mandated quarantine, through no fault of her own! She's around eight years old, and has come a long way from being borderline "fractious" cat to affectionate on her own terms with the tender love and care of our certified feline rehabilitators. (To our knowledge there is no such thing as a feline rehabilitator, but if there was, we would have MANY among our cat volunteer base.)
Shasha has been waiting for a home since January 20, 2018! She's 9 years old and at her core, is a very affectionate couch potato! She loves her treats, walks, and belly rubs. Her freckles are irresistible, don't you agree?  Shasha would love to be the apple of your eye. She is not a fan of loud noises and sudden movements, so she should live in an adult-only home with no other pets. If you're looking for a great walking buddy, you've found your girl! Please call 207-449-1366 to set up a meet and greet with Shasha!
J ack is a sweet older boy who would love a quieter home. He is diabetic, insulin dependant, and eats a prescription diet which is why he is fee waived. He has been doing well in the free roaming room with a few other cats, but definitely prefers the peace and quiet.
Gracelynn "Gracie" is both friendly and shy: equal parts introvert and extrovert. She's looking for a quiet home where she can perch and watch the birds! She has a "tipped ear" which means she probably belonged to a feral cat colony at some point in her life, but she is far from feral. This sweetie has been available for adoption since April 30th. She is FIV+ positive, so she will need to be an indoor only cat. FIV+ cats can live long, happy and healthy lives in a home, so please read more about FIV+ cats here.
If you have a home with a window where she can watch the world go by, please consider this wonderful girl who has been waiting months for her family to discover her.
Rosie the Rose-i-licious is a four-and-a-half-year-old black and tan coonhound/Shepherd mix. If you're looking for a jogging or hiking partner, look no further. In her last home, she walked two miles every day, but would have gladly gone farther! She has excellent leash manners so walking her is a dream! In her ASPCA Meet Your Match assessment, she was considered a Wallflower . Because she can be wary of new people, particularly men, we'll give you tips on how best to introduce her to new visitors in the home, as she can take a little time to warm up to strangers. Once she does, you could not ask for a sweeter, more lovable girl! She is very smart and eager to please. She knows the commands sit, stay and lie down, a total smartypants with cutest ears you've ever seen! Please call 207-449-1366 to set up a meet and greet with Rosie!
Norma is one-of-a-kind. At 14 years young, she's looking for someone to give her the love she deserves in her twilight years! She adores having her breakfast cooked for her - water added to her large portion of diet food and microwaved for 15 seconds. Her thyroid condition makes her especially hungry and if she is free roaming, she WILL try to eat anything she can scrounge or steal. We do call her "NAUGHTY Norma" and it is a well-deserved moniker! She also likes to be held and she will bury her head in your neck and purr loudly and anyone sitting in our kitchen is fair game for Norma lap time. Her owner should be patient with litter box issues. Questions about Norma? Call us at 207-449-1366.
Tessa is a 5 1/2 year old lady who first came to Midcoast Humane in 2015 on an interstate transport. She has been adopted and returned twice, after living with each adopter for at least a year. Her last owner described her as a sometimes cuddle-bug who loves going outside and is a great mouser. When not able to go outside, she likes looking out the window keeping track of the comings and goings.

Incidents of redirected aggression toward people due to her dislike of other animals were reported. She doesn't like other cats or dogs and her former owner recommended she be an only cat in an adult household. Here at Midcoast Humane she is in a free roaming cat room and seems to keep to herself. She has been friendly but not overly attention seeking. She is a rollie pollie, fuzzy wuzzy girl with a lovely white bib and subtle torti coloration. She is currently being fed a lower calorie diet for weight loss. An understanding, gentle torti loving adopter would be be SO PERFECT!
