Playing with Pastels

"Time in a Bottle", pastel, 9x9" $225

Dear Judy,

Last week I showed you how I begin a painting. Using vine charcoal, I create a value underpainting from my still life set up.

Next, I begin to add color using my hardest pastels, very lightly, right over the charcoal.

My thinking is to find the right value and choose the right color for the composition and apply the pastel using feathery strokes.

The painting above is the result of many layers of softer pastels. Painting the bottle took time... but it was really fun!
