Call to Action: South Carolina Proproses Red Drum Conservation Measures

Introduced February 26, 2026 by Senator George E. Campsen III, South Carolina Senate Bill 961 (S. 961) proposes science-based, forward-thinking changes to safeguard red drum for the long term:

  • Reducing the daily possession limit to one red drum per person (not exceeding two per boat) to ease harvest pressure on a vulnerable population.
  • Adjusting the slot limit to 18-25 inches total length, offering a slightly larger fish while no longer targeting the 15”ers.
  • Requiring non-offset, non-stainless steel circle hooks (size 4/0 or larger) when using natural bait, a proven method to cut post-release mortality and improve survival of released fish.

Release Over 20 fully endorses S. 961 as a model of proactive conservation that balances enjoyment today with prosperity tomorrow. We commend SC DNR for their leadership and the Senate Fish, Game and Forestry Committee for advancing this critical legislation. You can review our Official Letter of Support for S.961 by clicking here.
