When is it Time to Say Goodbye?

Here’s (another) question I’m asked all the time: When is it time for me to get a new computer? (Or iPhone, iPad, printer, etc.)

My first answer: Most people don’t like change, and some of them get too attached to something that works, and they don’t want to get another device that might be different. Years ago, nobody would’ve thought that one day in the not-too-distant future people would be paying hundreds of dollars for a phone, have multiple computers in the household, or even ditching cable television in favor of streaming services.

But to quote Bob Dylan, the times they are a-changin’, and that trend seems to grow stronger as time marches on. (There are driverless cars cruising around California as you read this, but that’s a story for another day!) What I’m saying here is that what’s once was considered “cutting edge” is now in the dustbin, and today there are newer, bigger, faster, sexier, and better versions of the same product available. But back to the question at hand: When exactly is the best time to decide it’s the optimal time to go out with the old and in with the new?

Still confused? Hopefully, you’ll find some clarity here.

The Apple Watch Files

As many of you know, I do a lot of running, but except for my iPhone (and iPod and Walkman before that), I never wanted to have any other technology with me. I’ve never bought an Apple Watch (I collect Movado watches), at least until last month. A lot of members of my running group (Run 169 Towns Society) swear by (or swear at) their watches that track all sorts of things – distance, speed, steps, heart rate, etc. I’m not a big data guy but seeing that some friends and family members have had heart issues when they were younger than I currently am, that makes me want to pay a little more attention to this sort of thing.

As I’m writing this, I haven’t even taken the watch out of the box; first things first! Once I get this newsletter (and my two blogs) finished, I’ll get down to business and start messing around with my new Apple Watch. Stay tuned to this space for the next installment!

May's Quick Tip: Reverse Image Lookup

Quick Tip

Do you need to find the origin of a picture? Perhaps you're on a dating site, and the profile shot of an interested party looks a little too good be true - wouldn't you want to find out if it's a "real" person, or some good looking blogger who is famous overseas but unknown in these parts?

Google to the rescue: You drag a picture into "Google Images," you can see other places on the web where this picture exists. In the example below, it's a stock photo that's been used a few times, namely in beauty and fashion articles.

News You Can Use!

Happenings in the Apple and tech world that will no doubt impact you!

✈️ In seven days (May 7, 2025), anyone who boards a plane (domestic or international), or enters a federal building will need either a verified REAL ID license (or ID card), or a passport or permanent resident card. The REAL ID will have the gold star in the upper right corner. Users can get a verified REAL ID license at the state's DMV offices or certain Triple A locations. Connecticut residents can learn more here.

📱 Apple MIGHT enter the foldable device market in 2026, if the rumors are to believed. Word on the street is that both a foldable version of the iPhone and the iPad are to be released in late 2026. MacRumors has the article here. I wonder if it'll have that entire Apple Intelligence situation straightened out by then...

🛒 If you've been to Whole Foods lately, you might've noticed that the 10¢ "bring your own bag" credit is no longer an option. Time marches on. But on the bright side, you can pay for your groceries by scanning your palm!
