Refocusing Your Career Fears
Students often avoid visiting the Center for Career Development because they think their career fears are strange. That is not the case at all! We often encounter students who are unsure about some aspect of their exploration. Check out some of the most common career fears we hear from students:
Career Fear #1:
The Center for Career Development is only for people who know what their future plans are, and I have no idea what to do!
The Center for Career Development is for all students—no matter which stage of career exploration you find yourself in. Are you unsure about what you want to do after you graduate? Most people are! The CCD helps you think about your interests and values in order to determine possible directions you may take. The goal is not to limit you to only one potential career path. Rather, the CCD gives you the tools for exploring and evaluating what brings you purpose.
What if your dream internship or job is out there, just waiting for you to find it? You won’t find it until you start! Set aside just 15 minutes to explore Purple Briefcase. This is the online platform that Wesleyan College uses to post jobs, internships, and fellowships to students. The CCD is continuously updating the site with new postings. What if you don’t see an opportunity that appeals to you? Sites like LinkedIn are a great starting point too. Come by the CCD to explore other methods of finding experiences.
Career Fear #2:
I don’t know where to start with finding an internship or job. I’m afraid I’ll never find a professional development experience.
Career Fear #3:
I don’t know what to expect in the interview process. It makes me really nervous.
Feeling intimidated by the interview process? You’re not alone! To kick this fear, practice in a low-pressure setting–like with the CCD! The staff will work with you to determine potential questions and hold a practice interview—either in person or over the phone. We’ll talk you through questions and give personalized suggestions for answering them. This is a great way to work through initial nerves and gain a sense of what the interview process is like in a more comfortable setting.
It’s true that the graduate school process can feel overwhelming. However, you can easily start gathering information by looking at graduate school websites and talking to your advisor or the CCD. There are several different components that go into an application, and requirements will often vary by institutions. The CCD has several resources that will help you stay organized, such as a sample Excel Spreadsheet for keeping track of your application materials (WesNet>Career Development). We can also review your different application components, including personal statements and C.V.s or resumes.
Career Fear #4:
I am thinking about going to graduate school, but I don’t know where to start. The process seems too confusing.
Career Fear #5:
I’ve declared a major, but I’m reconsidering if it was the right choice. I’m afraid it’s too late to change my mind.
You would be surprised how many students feel this way. Take this doubt about your major, and see it as a chance to motivate you to explore. The CCD offers PDE 100 (a 1 credit, split term course) in the spring semester that can help you work through your uncertainty. The goal is to evaluate your values, see how they can become a central part of your life, and find a path that truly fits your own interests. The CCD can also talk with you one-on-one to work through the doubts you’re having, explore your post-graduation options, and create a personalized plan for moving forward.
