On Thursday, February 23, we had the honor of dedicating our 107th home to the Johnson family at 601 Rose Street in Denton.
With over 50 people in attendance, including fellow Habitat homeowners, numerous volunteers, and Mayor Gerard Hudspeth, the Johnsons were enthusiastically welcomed into their new home. All in attendance enjoyed cupcakes donated by Candy Haven and coffee donated by Zera Coffee, as we celebrated this amazing day in the life of the Johnson family!
Shonbray Johnson, as well as all five of her children, spoke during the ceremony to thank the volunteers and Habitat staff for everything. Aaliyan, one of Shonbray's daughters, got emotional when honoring her mother: "She worked so hard. She deserves this."
We were honored to have City of Denton Mayor Gerard Hudspeth in attendance to graciously speak on the issue of affordable housing in Denton and Habitat's important role in contributing to the solution. The Denton Quilt Guild blessed the family by donating a beautiful handmade quilt that was presented during the ceremony. Rev. Cedric Chambers of Mt. Calvary Baptist Church presented Shonbray with a Bible and led the crowd in the prayers of blessing over the home.
This build was led by site leaders Mike Howard and Rich Totilo, alongside our amazing "Build Committee" volunteers. As part of her partnership with Habitat, Shonbray invested more than 300 hours of her own labor, called "sweat equity," into the building of her home, and built strong relationships with her new community of support: "With this journey, I have made the most friends I've had since I've been here in Denton!"
Shonbray and her five children now have a safe and affordable place to finally call "home." Thank you to all involved for the hard work and love poured into the building of this home!

Special thank you to Candy Haven and Cakes for donating delicious cookies and cupcakes to the recent events at our 107th home! It is such a blessing to our affiliate to have this support to help make our celebrations sweet. We were excited to use these desserts to celebrate our newest Habitat home and treat all the volunteers and donors who helped build it.

Jorge Vargas paid off his Habitat home!
|
Congratulations to Jorge Vargas, our 89th homeowner, for paying off his Habitat home! As many of you may remember, the Vargas family built their home alongside numerous volunteers at 914 Cross Timber Street in Denton in 2014. The home was built as part of Habitat's Homeownership program and was dedicated to them in July of that year, meaning this hardworking family paid off their mortgage in just 9 years!
We are continually amazed by and honored to work with families like this one. This family has accomplished something truly incredible, thanks to YOUR support!

"Our family lived in an apartment for 15 years. Every summer in the apartment, the A/C would go out. Going from the apartment to owning our house was a drastic change and blessing. It's something I'm very grateful for. I never had my own room until living in the house. Every year now, my siblings and I put Christmas lights up on the house for my mom." - Jorge Vargas, 89th Homeowner

"One of the aspects of Habitat's mission that resonates strongly with me — and many others — is our bias toward action. We build things that are meaningful and lasting: homes, communities and hope. We have always approached our work with humble recognition that we cannot achieve our mission alone."

We are raising funds to develop 8 acres of vacant land in Southeast Denton and establish a new "Habitat Village" housing development on the property. As many as 35 new affordable homes will be built alongside local families in need via this development. This project involves developing the infrastructure of this neighborhood, including the streets, sidewalks, utilities, proper drainage requirements, and everything else needed to support a neighborhood of 35 homes.
