What's Happening at CUNY

TAP applications are open for the 2024-25 academic year! Students can receive grants of up to $5,665 from New York State, no repayment needed. You have until June 30, 2024 to apply but this year you do not need to wait for the FAFSA release to file for TAP, so do it now! Apply here.

CUNY salutes its veteran peer mentors, who are available to help fellow student-veterans, their families and their dependents with transitioning to life as a student.

On Nov. 15, the Whitney Museum will host a student night celebrating the work of contemporary artist Henry Taylor. The museum’s teaching fellows, including a few from the CUNY Graduate Center, will hold a conversation in the gallery. Admission to The Whitney is *free* for anyone with a CUNY ID!

This CUNY graduate student just won a Climate Corps fellowship with the Environmental Defense Fund. Read more about his goals to help fight climate change.

Five CUNY community colleges have been named among the top 150 community colleges in the nation by the Aspen Institute. They’re eligible to compete for the 2025 Aspen Prize, which comes with a $1M award and is considered the highest recognition for community college achievement.

She’s only 28 years old, but this CUNY alum is already living her dream, working in medicine and earning over $200,000 a year as an anesthesiologist assistant! Here’s how she made it happen.

Important Announcements

Do you have an idea to make something in your neighborhood work better? The New York City Council is collecting ideas for its 2024 Participatory Budgeting cycle. Suggestions will be put up for a community-wide vote next spring. Improvements to schools, parks, libraries, public housing, streets and other public spaces can be funded. Submit your idea here.

Our campuses have food pantries and you don’t need to be eligible for government benefits to take advantage. Here’s the full list of CUNY food pantries; any CUNY student can use any pantry, but make sure to confirm the hours ahead of time.

There is a centralized online portal for members of our community to report instances of discrimination and retaliation on campuses.

Upcoming Events

On Nov. 9, the New Museum will host “Birth: A Convening on Art and Human Reproduction.” Dána-Ain Davis, a CUNY urban studies professor and author whose work focuses on issues of racism and reproduction, will be presenting and participating in a panel discussion. Read more about the event and reserve free student tickets.

On Nov. 10, Professor Qiulei Hu will give an overview of her new book, “Abandoned Women and Boudoir Resentment,” and discuss why the moral anxiety about female representation prompted third-century male writers to switch their focus from women’s external beauty to their inner thoughts and emotions. This event is hosted by AAARI; register to attend in person at the School of Labor and Urban Studies or on Zoom.

On Nov. 13, the CUNY Climate Consortium will host an all-day event with a town hall panel and expo showcasing the work of the University’s climate community organizations, programs and researchers. Register for the event here.

CUNY Callouts

Jael Puruncajas Pauta is a junior pursuing her degree in architecture at Queensborough Community College. Born in Queens, Jael moved to Ecuador at age 7, but returned to New York for college. Jael initially struggled with the readjustment to life in the United States. “Since college was the beginning of my new life, I had to overcome working and studying in a language that I couldn't remember at all,” she says. At QCC, Jael is a member of the Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society, which offers scholarships, networking events and leadership development programs for community college students. She’s also currently working part-time at both Macy’s and Whole Foods.

What has CUNY done for you?

“My experience in CUNY has made me feel comfortable with who I am and what my career will look like.”

What advice do you have for current students?

“Learn. Always keep learning something, because life and technology keep advancing and so do we.”
