Your
Coastal Kayak News & Specials for June 2016
|
The longest day of the year, fresh, mouth-watering local strawberries, the water temperature finally warming enough to tempt you to dive in - June has a lot going for it! Now the college students are out of school, and the teachers are out of school, which means that we are fully staffed, ready and eager to teach you about kayaking and paddleboarding; to give you that first sailing lesson that will get you hooked on the wind; to guide you through the waterways of our backyard introducing you to an environment so precious and beautiful that you will dream about it all year long.
We would feel privileged if you spent part of your vacation with us! Hope to see you soon!

A Tour for the Birds!!
On Sunday evening, June 19, we will be offering a special Salt Marsh Sunset/Moonrise Tour to benefit the Delaware Audubon Society.
Participants will enjoy a twilight paddle through the salt marshes of the Rehoboth Bay hoping to see osprey, blue heron, oyster catchers, terns, cormorants, pelicans, as well as the annual spawning rituals of the horseshoe crabs, so vital to our coastal eco-system. Space is limited and advanced reservations are required. The cost of the tour is $50 per person with all proceeds going to the Delaware Audubon Society.
Call 302.539.7999 for more information and for reservations or
book on-line. (If you book on-line, this tour is listed as the 6:00 pm Burton's Island Wildlife Tour)
Our 15th Annual Paddle for a Cure has been rescheduled for Sunday, Sept. 18th due to the lovely weather we had in May! Save the date and look for more details soon!

Sometimes you want a lot of fetch! |
 |
Know Your Fetch!
Of all of nature's elements wind is probably the one that most often effects us as paddlers. Living in a coastal environment means lots of interaction between land, air, and water. The dramatic differences between the temperatures of the ocean, bay, and land leads to one constant, wind!

Full Moon Paddles
Full moons are supposedly bad for inhibitions and washing clothes, but good for horseshoe crab mating and accepting marriage proposals! Another thing we think full moons are good for is paddling. On the evening of the full moon, the sun sets as the moon rises, and being on the water is truly the best seat in the house for this impressive display.
Strawberry Moon - Signifies the best time of the year to harvest strawberries in North America - definitely true for Delaware!
Tuesday July 19th - Buck Moon
Represents the time of year that male deer begin to regrow their antlers that they shed yearly. Also known as the Thunder Moon, after the season's many storms. (Thunderstorms are not allowed on our guided tours.)
Wednesday August 17th - Sturgeon Moon - Named after the Sturgeon fish species, which is abundant during August, particularly in the Great Lakes. Also known as the Red Moon.
Thursday September 15th - Harvest Moon
- Signifies the time of year when Native American crops w
ere ready for harvest. The Harvest Moon typically rises early in the day, which allows farmers to work late into the evening.
