November is a month of gratitude, and we want to thank all of our customers who attended our Down on the Farm Breakfast on Oct. 21!
We served almost 400 people all-you-can-eat pancakes and Great River Maple local syrup, Beeler's ham, Timeless Prairie apples, Country View Dairy and O'Brien's Own yogurt parfaits, Sidecar coffee and Wilson's apple cider. While it was a blustery day, folks still enjoyed visiting the farm, meeting our cows, calves and goats, and getting to see our kangaroo Scooter hopping around.
Congrats to our $25 gift certificate winners: Jean Aldrich of Cedar Falls, who won the door prize drawing, and Mike Hollen of Waterloo, who was the winner of the "Guess the Hay Bale Weight" contest. He guessed 650 pounds, and the bale weighed 640 pounds.
|
|
We had two big winners in our October CA$H COW contest! Congrats to two customers from Waterloo, who each found a $100 jug.
Teresa Phillips of Cedar Falls, Kim Kasischke of Cedar Falls, one customer from Waterloo, and one from Walker also found $5 jugs.
We will label 11 jugs with $100 in November. Best chance to find one is right away at the beginning of the month! But make sure to keep looking throughout the month as we mark ten $5 jugs every week!
Look inside the jug toward the label to see a "5" or "100".

Jean Aldrich |
The November Customer of the Month is
Jean Aldrich of Cedar Falls.
Jean was the winner of our $25 gift certificate at our Down on the Farm Breakfast last month, which was her first time visiting the Hudson location. She typically shops at our Cedar Falls store for the milk, ice cream and other local products.
Jean, a mother of four, first heard about Hansen's products by word-of-mouth. Now, it's the go-to choice for her 12-year-old daughter with cerebral palsy.
"I couldn't get her to drink white milk without some sort of flavoring until we found Hansen's," Jean said. "Now she won't drink any other white milk."
Thanks, Jean! Customers of the Month generally receive a $5 gift certificate to use at our stores and two free hands-on tour passes to the farm (a $24 value). You could be chosen by filling out an entry form at our stores or through your comments on our
Facebook and
Twitter pages.

Our November Cow of the Month is celebrating her 3rd birthday this month.
Nascar
was born Nov. 4, 2014. She is polled (born without horns, a very desirable trait), a Red & White Holstein, and has extremely long teats. We call those "good handles" in the dairy industry!
Nascar just gave birth to her second calf on Oct. 6. She is producing 76 pounds of milk a day (almost 10 gallons). She had a rare occurrence happen - her uterus prolapsed after her most recent birth - but she got all put back together and is doing great!

Hansen's 'legen-dairy' cow passes on
|
|
|
|
Len was born in 2004, the same year the creamery was established. She has been a fixture on the farm almost as long as Blake Hansen has been herd manager.
|
Anyone visiting the farm in the past few years has likely asked the question, "Why is that cow out roaming free?"
That's Len, who at age 13 was our oldest cow. She was free to roam the farm because we wanted to keep her from being hurt living in the barn among the other younger cows. In October, we made the difficult decision to send her peacefully to that big green pasture in the sky, as she was arthritic and losing weight.
Before that, we took some photos around the farm. Len was "Established in 2004," the same year as our on-farm creamery, so she has been pumping out milk for almost as long as the creamery has. She produced over 300,000 pounds of milk in her lifetime and was a great-great-great-great grandmother to a calf born on the farm this summer. She was a tough-as-nails matriarch, had a beautiful frame and was rated "Excellent" by cow classification standards. Len truly was "Legen-dairy," and she will be missed!

INGREDIENTS
3 cups (12 oz) penne pasta 3 cups butternut squash, peeled and cut into 1/2-inch pieces 1 large shallot, thinly sliced 2 garlic cloves, minced 4 cups (32 oz.) chicken stock 1 cup Hansen's heavy cream* 2 Tbsp. Hansen's butter* 1/2 tsp. salt 1/4 tsp. black pepper 3 fresh sage leaves, chopped, plus additional for garnish 2 cups (8 oz.) Sartori SarVeccio Parmesan cheese, shredded*
DIRECTIONS
In Dutch oven or large saute pan, combine pasta, squash, shallot, garlic, stock, cream, butter, salt, pepper and 3 chopped sage leaves. Bring mixture to boil, reduce heat to medium; cook at a gentle boil 12-15 minutes, stirring frequently, until pasta and squash are cooked through and sauce has reduced somewhat and begins to thicken. Remove from heat. Add parmesan and mix well (the sauce will thicken more). Garnish with fresh chopped sage and serve immediately.
