Greetings!

It’s not very often that the lead to Hilborn Charity eNews features a quote from Albert Camus. But Laura Champion has once again upped the ante and is challenging you, dear reader, with a question. No, it’s not about how well you know your philosophers. Instead, she asks, “Where has the drive to solve society’s problems gone?” It’s an OP ED that questions vague missions and the push to “raise more.”

Since we’re getting spicy, there’s more in this issue to interest and challenge you.

  • Gail Picco reviews the book, “Healing from the Nonprofit Sector” by Mazarine Treyz.
  • Amina Mohamed delivers her third installment in the series on ethical storytelling. She has a question too— “Are you still controlling the story?”
  • John Hallward of GIV3 shares highlights from a study on prosocial behaviours (giving, volunteering, voting, donating blood, and so on) in Canada.

Pollyanna or philosopher. Hero or guide. Fundraiser or philanthropist. No matter the framing, discussions on our sector are getting real. The issues are complicated and stakes are high but the goal remains—as ever, a more civil, equitable and compassionate society for all.

PS. By providing meals for more than 3 million children at their place of education, Mary’s Meals is putting this year’s World Hunger Day call to action into practice: “The End of Hunger is in Our Hands.”

Until next time,

Lisa MacDonald, Editor, Hilborn Charity eNews
